Moral Quandary: Free healthcare using a loophole in state system

Good point. I am still a bit unclear the exact difference for me between PPACA's use MAGI(which includes some deductions, dividends/interrest and only certain tax exempt investments) and the Mass plan (which does not include any deductions, taxable dividends/interest and no tax exempt...

Moral Quandary: Free healthcare using a loophole in state system

I called Mass Health again. This customer service representative now says that taxable interest/dividends are included but that tax exempt interest/dividends are not. They sound very confused as he had to check a couple times with supervisor. I guess I just need to wait for the eligibility...

Moral Quandary: Free healthcare using a loophole in state system

It is Mass Health. I called them earlier as I saw that exact line at that web site you linked. I talked to the representative to confirm and dividends/interest does not apply to people under the age of 65. They categorize dividends and interest as an asset and they apply to people over...

Moral Quandary: Free healthcare using a loophole in state system

It looks like the PPACA is going to be based on MAGI(not AGI as I mistakenly thought) according to this document (great info in here). Go to page 6 http://www.ncsl.org/documents/health/DefIncACAMedicdProv.pdf Seems to be a bit of a trade off between the PPACA and the Mass plan in terms...

Moral Quandary: Free healthcare using a loophole in state system

I did not realize this. This makes more sense to me. I had read that the PPACA was going to be based on AGI but from your information that does not appear to be true. Thank you.

Moral Quandary: Free healthcare using a loophole in state system

As I mentioned previously, the Mass criteria is not of much different from the National criteria for the PPACA in terms of an assets/ means test. At least from what little we know of the PPACA at this time.

Moral Quandary: Free healthcare using a loophole in state system

I thought this as well until I read that the national plan also does not have an asset/means test. My guess is the people who can take advantage of this are relatively so small in number that it was not worth it to try and cover

Moral Quandary: Free healthcare using a loophole in state system

Loophole was probably a bad term on my part. It just seems so obvious to me that this is something that could have been covered quite easily. And from what I have read of the national plan, it appears to have the same opening in the eligibility.

Moral Quandary: Free healthcare using a loophole in state system

Yes I agree with your sentiment. I also am having a hard time imagining that come 2014, there are going to be more than a handful of people in this exact same spot who are going to 100% turn it down. I have even read in other threads that it is going to change when people think they are...

Moral Quandary: Free healthcare using a loophole in state system

In my state of Mass., we have subsidized health care for low income families. In talking with the people who run it, there appears to be a loop hole that I can use to get pretty much free health insurance for my family and keep all the doctors/hospitals I already use. The "loophole" is...

Question about health care for Mass residents

Thank you for the link. In general, how does this work? Do you choose the plan, pay for it and then get money back when filling out your taxes when you can prove your agi is low enough? Thanks for your help.

Question about health care for Mass residents

Hi all, I am an early retiree (44), who purchases health care for my family of three. I think I have a basic understanding of how the national Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act will affect us should every thing work out by 2014. I also know that Massachusetts has its own state health...

One last item before FIRE: Health Insurance

Thank you for the info and the kind words. I looked into the states financial assistance and did not see any. All I could find was that if your income is under 54k, you may qualify for cheaper insurance, but the insurance is not that great in comparison to the other plans. Have you found...

One last item before FIRE: Health Insurance

Our Cobra is looking to be around $1100 a month but that is for me, wifey and daughter. I keep hearing 2014 as well, but hopefully something can become more clear before then for the national health care. Even 2014 would be fine, as long as its well defined. I wonder if the government will...

One last item before FIRE: Health Insurance

after doing lots of web surfing and calling, it looks like we have settled on Cobra. It is roughly equivalent in price to the individual policies but with much better coverage/deductibles etc. I am so jealous of you guys in other states. Our Mass. health plans are very expensive. We will stay...

Thanks for the info. Sadly, Mass is one of the states that is excluded from this policy.

In general, do Dental plans cover anything for braces? Outside of that, I think I would simply do a pay as you go instead of getting insurance at least for the first few years of retirement.

One last item before FIRE: Health Insurance

In case their are other Mass people on here, ehealthinsurance.com will not work for any zip code in Massachusetts. I called ehealthinsurance and they said so many of the providers are butting heads with the state that they, hopefully temporarily, do not have access to the information so anyone...

One last item before FIRE: Health Insurance

thank you for the advice. I originally did not want to think about cobra because I figured I should just go through the hassle now of getting new insurance since the Cobra would run out but I did not realize that Cobra allowed me to get my company's group rate. I will look into this some...

One last item before FIRE: Health Insurance

OK thank you, that seems to make some sense. I was actually going to look into the IEEE (the engineering plan you were referring to I think. Wife and I were both engineers for our whole career) plan. I will double check just to make sure it is not available

One last item before FIRE: Health Insurance

hi all, Thank you for the responses. I think my original question was poorly worded. I have some knowledge in how to obtain health insurance for my family. What I was more curious about was how to obtain a group rate type price. I have heard that there are groups that one can join for a...

One last item before FIRE: Health Insurance

I will be FIREing in the next 3 months or so. The one last big item on my ToDo list is acquiring Health Insurance for my family. I have always had health insurance through my jobs so this is a new world for me. Are their any tips people could recommend in terms of how to secure the best...

Need a hard push to make a big decision. Please help!

ok so then my 4.2% perspective initial AWR really does seem risky as I originally feared. I do have some items that may help me in the future though 1) Small pension 2) Maybe some social security 3) Maybe a medium size inheritance 4) Downsizing of house to reduce expense and to add cash So I...

Need a hard push to make a big decision. Please help!

The SWR is a bit tricky for me to calculate since I expect my expenses to change during my retirement. If I had to meet my current needs, I am showing I need ~63k a year (which includes health insurance and taxes), on a 1.5M portfolio which is approx a SWR of 4.2% which is likely way too...
