    For the Birds!

Just some Magpies, Blue jays and Chikadees around here in Edmonton Alberta. A Northern Flicker landed on the fence the other day. Just started getting back into birds as my life became less stressful, anyway, had my most amazing birdwatching hike ever in Costa Rica last year. Went for a walk...

dealing with others perceptions of ER

I feel the same as the first post, it's awkward, mainly don't want to sound like I'm bragging. Usually I end with saying I'm jealous of people that love their job but I didn't so I had a plan to get out. I've also used "I'm a personal investor", it's a line I picked up somewhere on this forum.

What's your favorite thing about not having to go to w*rk???

Besides getting the sleep I need (#1), not having the incompetent asses in management having control over any part of my life.

OK, that's a good start for me. I'll look into this stuff, thankyou!

    Foreign Investments

I've started looking into info on investing in foreign countries. It looks like the only way to do it is with a broker. I'm just looking for some basic info. One example is Panama with CD rates ,specifically with credit unions, that I can't "confirm" anywhere, of 7 to 8%. I've also found...

What did your Mom and Dad have to say?

Sorry for offending, you're right, but I thought yours was not called for. Maybe you read more into it than I meant. I didn't need their support, or anybody's, (except for spouse of course) I would have done it either way. At my age I hear alot of "what? you're crazy". It simply was a matter...

What did your Mom and Dad have to say?

I'm well aware that not all parents are great. I've never suggested "everyone" should care what Mom and Pop had to say. Danmar doesn't realize that some people on earth have had good parents? I'll stand by my "duh".

    The Class of 2011

Wohoo! Gave my notice today! I feel better already, I've been in that place for 24 years and I'm out on July 28th. Don't tell anyone but on the 28th I'm gonna leave half way through my shift :o) Can someone please add me to the list? thanks

What did your Mom and Dad have to say?

First of all, lucky enough to still have both my parents. Well, my Dad didn't believe it at first but once I went over my plan with him he was 100% supportive along with my mother. They set the example on being responsible with money so I suppose that's why they understood it. Dad had a very...

    The Class of 2011

Well hopefully I can be added to the list very shortly! Looks like I sold the house today and that was a necessity. May have to change my name as I will JUST turn 43 before it goes through and I milk all the benefits from the copmpany I work for. This is so exciting!

    "You're too young to retire!"

zaqsxw: that's a great one too! saving up for freedom, I'll remember that.

    "You're too young to retire!"

Thanks for all the congrats, it's very exciting to be in the class of 2011. Since my early 20's I've had the plan of FIRE. I used to talk about it openly back then but most were on a different page. I too find it amazing that few people set themselves up for retirement. To each their own of...

    "You're too young to retire!"

about 18 years ago my co-workers had a bet on when I would "actually" retire (it's still written down) I win! They were way off.

    "You're too young to retire!"

That's what people are telling me. I really don't get it.. too young to be free? I stuck out an o.k. but unsatisfying job for 24 years to get to this point. I was there for the money, I admit it. If these guys weren't getting paid they wouldn't be there so why would I stay if I have enough...

    What's with society and ER?

I was in Vietnam where I saw them working (hard!) from 6:00 am til late at night, everyday and yet they appear to be very happy, friendly people. Works for them. I'm way too lazy for that.

    What's with society and ER?

It would be alot easier to explain 'living beyound their means'. If you make a decent buck and you get a surprise bill for 1 G and you have to use credit to pay it, your living beyond your means.

    What's with society and ER?

500,000,000 scoops with a teaspoon will empty an olympic size swimming pool.

    What's with society and ER?

I don't want to change the world and basically happy with the way the economy works. I agree, there are alot of people with new vehicles all their life that retire comfortably. I wasn't referring to those people. Like I said, it's a free world, just surprising so few plan ahead.

    What's with society and ER?

So few people I know of are planning for or even think about ER. It seems, as a rule, the way it works in North America is to work your whole life, making payments on houses, cars, boats, shopping for a hobby etc. Putting the very minimum or zero away for retirement. Living beyond their means...

    That show on tv: "Hoarders"

I think the show is disturbing, and almost always (can't watch it any more but the ones I saw) is an unhappy ending. I wonder how someone can live like that but then I think most have a bit of "hoarder" in us. I've been emptying the house of all unused items in preparation for FIRE in another...
