    Milestone

I have focused on retiring at 60 at the very latest for a very long time. We really want to enjoy the "go go" years from 60 to 70 to do some things, assuming we will have to slow down at some point in our 70s. So, even if things happen and our nest egg shrinks, happy to retire at 60 with...

    Milestone

We have penciled in April 1, 2025 as the day we will retire or stick around and work for a bit longer and pad the nest egg. That will depend on a number of things, mostly how much we are enjoying or not enjoying work. We will both be 58.5 on that day. 60 is a hard stop for sure. Between now...

Ten Years Later Well, a little more than ten years after I was excited to hit 500k at 46 years of age......... Just turned 57, planning on checking out about a year from now and we just hit $3 Million in retirement savings. Ten really great years at work in terms of compensation combined with...

    San Antonio/Austin this December?

We were in San Antonio for a week of vacation a couple of weeks ago. We had never been to SA before and had a really terrific time. We stayed right on the Riverwalk (Canopy by Hilton) and did all the touristy stuff and had great experiences at all the bars and restaurants. Walked up to the...

    Race to 2024 - please join :)

Funny - just found this thread. Haven't been on the forum for a few years. Our updated target for retirement is also Fall of 2024 when we both turn 58. Everything financial and personal keeps pointing to that date and we look to be right on track.

What do you do for a living?

Humanities major who ended up in retail. (retail??? everyone hates retail!) Started at 17k a year 22 years ago. Will make 350k this year. (many promotions) Was saving a TON the last 4-5 years when my pay about doubled. Just had my divorce finalized. Ex-wife took half. Need to save...

    New opportunity advice!

Yup. Probably happens to a lot of us. I got "stuck" in retail. Only job I could find out of college - eventually made way more than I could make elsewhere if I left the industry. Retail owns me!

    Another Reason to FIRE

Yep - well said. I try to limit the stuff on vacation as well but megacorp pays me very, very well. I am ok with a couple of interruptions to my vacation and a few evening and weekend emails/calls each week. My bonus last year was more than double the average US household income. For that, I...

A slight twist on How do you convince your Spouse to RE

Yes in my case. It's an interesting moral question. Personally, I see it as my call as to when I want to retire if the decision is based on an average retirement lifestyle versus a more luxurious one.

let's say she was somewhere south of happy. but she'll get over it

A slight twist on How do you convince your Spouse to RE

Boy does all this sound familiar. My DW has always been a stay at home Mom. I am 47, she is 44. I expect to retire somewhere between 55 and 60. I recently told her I may be want to retire at 55 with a more modest lifestyle instead of, say, 60 with a more luxurious lifestyle. She seemed unhappy...

Tell me not to buy a bigger house

I sincerely appreciate everyone's responses. The realtor showed us the house tonight. Interesting place. Gorgeous lake, in great condition on the outside but some parts of the house inside need serious updating. It would cost us some money to make it look the way we want. Probably 800-850k...

Tell me not to buy a bigger house

Same thing out here - if you want nice location, extra garage space and all that, the homes are typically huge. If the house we are looking at was 2000-2500 square feet instead of 4000, it would be perfect. We are also in no rush so maybe we give the real estate people those specs and have...

Tell me not to buy a bigger house

I definitely appreciate the feedback. I understand many of these polite posters would actually rather say to me "are you a frickin' idiot?". My wife doesn't work, the kids are grown and she loves working in the yard. I can't imagine cleaning can be too bad - how much of a mess can...

Tell me not to buy a bigger house

Wow. Crazy, isn't it? We are originally from the Boston area, now in Michigan. For the price of an ordinary home in Boston, you can buy a castle here.

Thank you! I am reading your post over and over. I think I will print it and post in my office.

Tell me not to buy a bigger house

We drove by the house last night to take a peak - seeing it with the realtor after work today. What a setup: 4,000 square foot house on a very nice all sports lake, sandy beach, 3/4 of an acre, 2 car attached garage plus a 3.5 car detached garage (not a pole barn - heated and finished like the...

Tell me not to buy a bigger house

Wow - 500 square feet! I am curious: do you live in a very high cost urban area? What sort of income do you have and what sort of interests? My space issue is that I own big toys: three cars, a boat and two motorcycles. Plus 1-2 of my kids will be living at home over at least the next few...

Tell me not to buy a bigger house

Good thoughts. The tough part about where I live is that if you want some land, you will almost certainly have to live off of a dirt road. I have a hobby car and one of my motorcycles that would absolutely be miserable on a dirt road (a Porsche and an MV Agusta).

Tell me not to buy a bigger house

We may have really lost our minds now - wife found another huge house with 2 car attached garage plus a separate 3.5 car garage and it's also lakefront. Way more money but living on a lake with a huge garage workshop is the absolute dream home. Only a couple of miles from where we live now...

Tell me not to buy a bigger house

Thanks Ronnieboy. Sounds very similar to my situation. I also kicked around the idea of buying the dream house when the market collapsed but didn't pull the trigger. Sounds like you may be in great shape long term. The thought of a $700 electric bill is wild. My current house maxes out at...

Tell me not to buy a bigger house

I have given that some thought. A buddy of mine has quite the collection of motorcycles. He rents a 2000 sq ft industrial space and uses it for storage and man cave.

Tell me not to buy a bigger house

Not really in debt, just have a good interest rate on my mortgage. If I really wanted to, i could sell some stock I own and pay off the house next week.
