    PIMCO vs. Vanguard Bond fund

Thank you everyone for the well thought replies. I think I am going to put 50% into each fund for now. Still learning about a lot about bonds of this and the replies are very helpful.

    Rational Investing Portfolio, Bob Clyatt

I agree. I read this book and enjoyed it, but to me, the asset allocation model is a bit complicated. For example, take emerging mkts. Vanguard's total International fund is comprised of about 25% emerging mkts. If 30% of your EQUITY portfolio is in International, you are well represented in...

    PIMCO vs. Vanguard Bond fund

Hi everyone, Been awhile since I have posted. 47yo with target fire date of next yr. I am in process of reallocating and would appreciate any thoughts on my bond option in 401k plan. This would pertain to about $375,000 and decision is not insignificant. The biggest question I have is weighing...

Renting or buying? What is best for a second home.

I have similar reasons for thinking about buying a small beach condo. It is difficult to find places where I want to go that are dog friendly and availability gets tricky when you don't plan out. Personal decision, but if you use it, have the money, and have fun, it's worth it.

    "Just one more year"...

Thank you for the well written and personal note. It's been said many times here but very sorry that you had to lose a friend. If the potluck is going to have 150 people, he must have been well liked and very active. On a personal note, I am aiming for next yr and now know what that 1 yr...

    Class of 2012

Probably worth it for 15k, depending on what you have. Just be sure Aapril doesn't turn into, well how about Aug, etc.. I am preparing for that myself and being on a bonus system, it's easy to get caught up in another 6 months.

The peace of mind is definitely worth it and it's amazing on what you can save in 7 months when you put your mind to it. Also, we all know how fast Nov and Dec go by with the holidays and May will be here very quickly.

    Class of 2012

Agree completely, and I also have realized that it is easy to find a reason to to delay it. For example, wor* has been much more enjoyable over last 4 weeks, but that's how it has always been for me. A good period, things run smoothly, and then another yr goes by without haven't made any...

""Yesterday at the gym, i saw the news bit about the coach from Tennessee diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's. DH's mother died from Alzheimer's and they now think that is probably what took his grandmother. Bam. another reminder."" Yes, I read that article about the coach. Way too young...

    Class of 2012

After the recent stock mkt debacle I have second guessed my plan for July 2012 somewhat. After the initial disapointment wore off, I am more than ever committed to LEAVING work next yr. Time to get out of tech sales, regardless if I fall a little short of original savings goal. Life is short.

    Are Things THAT Tight ?

Regardless of how many people are out at restaurants or the malls, it is obviously not a healthy economic climate right now. Yes- as some people have mentioned- jobs such as Java programmers exist and are going unfilled because of a lack of skills. However, for non programmers, and in...

    Two Years Out

I read in " The Joy of not working" that a primary concern before retirement is having enough money & after, people are more concerned with their health vs having enough money. Losing the weight will go a long way to assuring a happy & healthy retirement.

    Moving to Latin America...help!

I have friends that live in La Cruz ( pacific coast) and have a high electric bill because of 2 things; the humidity, and the fact that as usage goes up, so does the rate per kw. The assumption is if you can afford a lot of usage, you can pay more. There are tricks to get around some of this if...

    Moving to Latin America...help!

Hi I moved to Mexico 2yrs ago and while I still w*rk, selling into L.A, I plan on hanging it up in 1-2 yrs but staying down here. If I move, it will be to another country and most likely not back to US anytime soon. Here are my thoughts: Safety- I got tired of defending Latin America as a...

    Class of 2012

That's about my timeline. I have already started the adjustment period and while I am still trying to get the job done, I have made a significant hurdle in that I am not stressing about sales. This is the fun part and the next yr will go by fast.

Howdy 53 and hate my job.

I had a boss tell me once that there are three things that people need in their jobs to be happy; good compensation ( being paid fairly for what you do), chemistry ( getting along with your boss ), and job content. None of those are working for you and it's just a matter of time, especially if...

Run don't walk from this market

It's definitely a healthy thing for you, personally, that your "expectations" of the job market are positive and let's all hope that people get back to work, especially in the higher paying jobs. I work with engineers in Mexico that make 22k/yr for US firms such as Intel and Continental Auto...

Run don't walk from this market

Perhaps it's because the US jobs market is at its worst levels in decades. If you are unemployed- especially in certain fields- you might feel discouraged. Next on the list would be the condition of the US housing market. Will it correct eventually? Of course, but recent data is ugly and has...

Advice: Sell or Rent my condo?

It is always a lot more work renting a place, especially if you do not live close, than many people realize. With the numbers you are mentioning, I would sell it as fast as I could. You might not be able to get the 450 but who cares if you are above water.

Run don't walk from this market

A long but interesting article about Bob Rodriguez's views of current market. This is the same contrarian who predicted tech bubble and 2008 mkt collapse. Bob Rodriguez: The man who sees another crash - The Term Sheet: Fortune's deals blog Term Sheet A quick summary is that he is not...

I'm 42 and would like to retire at 55 in Costa Rica

Agree with everyone's comments. The above price isn't a gringo price as I have rarely seen Americans in the neighborhood or restaurant. However, it is on the expensive side for Mexico. The Vacio ( argentinian style steak) which is dry aged and spectacular is about $16, whereas in Boston, that...

I'm 42 and would like to retire at 55 in Costa Rica

Hi, the city is Guadalajara, 2nd largest city in Mexico, and centrally located. I live downtown and not in Chapala or Ajijic which are very popular for ex pats and about 60 min from downtown. It is elevated, so the climate is dry and mostly "spring like" year around. It does get hot at times-...
