Turning 50 in a month, I know what you are going to say..

You have almost $9m excluding real estate. Assume you live to 85 and your investment returns are no more than inflation. That means you can spend more than $250k per year. That doesn't include SS or savings from downsizing. Your bigger issue is to have a good estate plan. Do you live in a...

Holding $600K in cash - feeling like an idiot. Options???

The penalty for early redemption of iBonds is a loss of the last 3 months of interest. Let's say you buy an iBond yielding 1.6% and redeem after only one year. You will still have earned 1.2%. The good thing about iBonds is that the rates will go up if inflation goes up. Fixed annuities are...

Cost for CPA to do your taxes

MLPs issue a K-1 to reflect your share of revenue and expense. It's a little extra work but not a big deal. I suggest taking your 2020 return to someone else early next year to get a competitive estimate.

2019 Effective Federal income tax rate

IIRC $75k can be taxed at 0% for married couples, but the amount is reduced by other income. In other words, that $75k is reduced by income from wages, interest, and IRA distributions. Things could change if Biden wins. He proposes to tax capital gains as ordinary income and eliminate the...

lower MM yield = rethinking retirement income stream

Ally offers 1.3% on a no penalty CD which is similar to a MM fund. Some dividend stocks are relatively safe. High rated utilities, Waste Management, J&J, etc. I don't like corporate bonds. Those rated AA don't pay squat and you'll lose principal if rates rise.

Coronavirus - Financial, Health and Other impacts II

Don't abandon stocks The PE multiple is still a bit high at 22 but what are the alternatives? 10 year treasuries yield 1.3%. Dividend stocks like utilities yield over 4%. I'm not saying that the market is a bargain or that I fully understand the impact of the virus. I'm just saying that...

If NE Florida is not Full, it sure will be soon!

I think you always see a lot of homes for sale in many parts of Florida because of the average age of the occupants. A 70 year old couple retires to Florida, one spouse dies, the other moves back north near their kids.

Punta Gorda is a smaller town with manageable traffic. But a large Lenar development is filling up quickly and a large Allegiant resort will be opening in just over a year.

Approaching 65 (Medicare) Having difficult time with Advantage vs Supplemental Plans

Advantage Advantage plans include drug coverage, vision, and dental and are often less expensive than medigap plans. Finding a doctor that accepts Advantage shouldn't be a problem in most areas but that might not be the case anywhere. Years ago I was shopping for my mother and I was told...

    QE4?

Lower oil prices hurt oil company profits but they help all other companies and individuals. I don't see why lower oil prices would cause a broad market correction. Sent from my iPad using Early Retirement Forum

    QE4?

I don't think the sell off has much to do with Ebola. I think it's due to a weak economy in Europe and the Fed scaling back treasury purchases. Sent from my iPad using Early Retirement Forum

    The Inevitable 10% Correction

Market will bounce back because sellers have no other place to park their money. They won't be happy with nothing in a money market fund or 1.5% in a 2 year A rated bond. The market is fairly valued so I don't expect big gains going forward. But I don't expect corrections to be severe or long...

Vanguard Wellesley Income Inv VWINX and forget about it?

IMO the fed isn't about to raise interest rates while the stock market is in decline. You probably won't lose money in bonds and stocks at the same time. Look at recent market action. High yield stocks like utilities ave held up much better than average. Sent from my iPad using Early...

Obamacare MAGI > 400% FPL and Silver Plan premium

Potentially difference if you stay below 400% of poverty level. Maximum net premium is 9.5% of income if you stay below 400%. Premium for family of 4, adults in their mid 50s might pay 15k for coverage. If income is < $94k the most you pay is 9.5% of income ($8500). Make more than $94k...

How Much Money Do You Need to be Happy ?

Good attitude. I never thought I had a big ego, but I got upset when some of my peers got paid more than me. I felt that my pay was a measure of my relative value and I have to admit that it bothered me when others were paid / valued more than I was. Once I retired it didn't bother me so...

SS Trust Fund to run dry sooner than anticipated

Several articles but here's an excerpt: The New York Post reported Sunday that as unemployment checks run out, many jobless are trying to gain government benefits by declaring themselves unhealthy. More than 10.5 million people -- about 5.3 percent of the population aged 25 and 64 -- received...

SS Trust Fund to run dry sooner than anticipated

I read that SS disability has doubled in recent years and that many new claims occur after unemployment benefits run out. I also read that more than 40% of new claims are for mental stress. Smells like a scam to me.

Thoughts on bonds of banks like Morgan Stanley & Goldman?

Nowhere to go for safe income these days. Forget about CDs, treasuries, or AAA rated corporate bonds. But bonds issued by these A rated banks yield up to 4% for 3-5 years. Thoughts?
