    Scam artists

Exactly ~ similar experience about a guy who got stuck for some valid reason many years ago in Baltimore when I was younger and out for nightlife. I balked since I was from there, but I think my friend gave him $10 or so... then we saw him again later with the same story in the same place...

    Too much money in IRA

Agree, we are withdrawing against tIRA/401k as DH turned 60 last year and I'll do the same in 5 years. Have been FIREd for 15 yrs and living off of taxable investments. We're still managing income against ACA, but the thought is to minimize future RMDs and tax brackets/cliffs once our SS and...

    Ladder Injuries

What a topic ~ these stories are incredible and I'm struck by how each of you/us have ladder tales... often deadly :( It made me think of a few of my friends over the years who have had similar situations ... Friend #1 cleaning leaves from gutters fell & broke his hip, Friend #2 climbing...

Questioning the 4% plan in retirement

The marine insurance business has changed significantly, following recent catastrophic hurricanes. My DH and I live aboard our sailing catamaran full time and our insurance doubled recently after being fairly steady (for the last 13 yrs), even being outside of hurricane zone in season. It is...

Persistent smoke smell - what to do?

I use activated charcoal extensively in closets, etc, and they work extremely well. Inexpensive and worth a try. Can be reactivated by sitting them in the sun for several hours...

Thank you for sharing your story and links. A very moving post. It was helpful to understand what a DwD scenario might look like as an alternative to hospice.

Local Bank Branch Closing - Options?

Since I haven't seen it mentioned yet, we have used Capital One online banking for almost 15 years. It is easy and convenient with many free ATM locations and savings/money markets with historically high yields.

Be honest: Which of your pre-FIRE plans turned out to be coping fantasies?

One of the most enjoyable things about freedom in retirement is letting the day present itself to you! It's also uniquely wonderful to be able to act on last-minute opportunities both big (travel) and small (meet-ups) without being tied-up in a schedule. It is also joke with newly retired...

Who out there consumes multiple media at the same time?

I couldn't if I tried! I can't read or concentrate with anything going on in the a background, especially music. Even when driving and trying to get through some complicated directions I have to turn the radio down - Lol. I do always have multiple tabs open on my computer and surf between...

    Asset based mortgage

Interesting link. I saw, as you stated, that "Retirement Assets" won't qualify if you are under 59.5 yrs old, since you are subject to a penalty for withdrawal. Then there is the section on taxable assets :"Depository accounts and Securities ", which have a requirement that at least one...

    BCBS lawsuit settlement postcard.

We just received the email today. Past experience with a this type of class action suit (for Invesco a while back) got us a whole $7 or so... It was quite interesting and unsurprising to see that minimum $5 payment quote that someone found for this BCBS settlement. Will fill it out and see...

Coping with losing ability to do loved activities

I can empathize! Right now I've messed up my shoulder (rotator cuff?) and can't do basic things and need help with my hair and dressing, not to mention disrupted sleep with pain. I'm out of the country now, but cutting my time short to go to the US and get it addressed. The main thing I can...

Recurring charge fraud on CapitalOne MasterCard

It happened again. At the one month mark a new, recurring charge came onto our account from Dinnerly. Seems like the Capital One block on our card for the merchant Dinnerly did not work. Finally, a Capital One agent reached out to the merchant with me on the line to try and track down the...

Recurring charge fraud on CapitalOne MasterCard

Glad that you were able to get reimbursed for charges to a checking account! Agree that the most direct way is to start with the merchant. However, with a fraud charge it might not be possible without knowledge of the original account.

Recurring charge fraud on CapitalOne MasterCard

Sounds like the same situation I just had with MasterCard allowing recurring charges through with a new card number. If the merchant block didn't work, my only recourse would be to cancel the card. Crazy.

Recurring charge fraud on CapitalOne MasterCard

I've never heard of a block either. The CapitalOne fraud agent had to do it. Thanks, hope it is over now. PS During this time, I had issues with my 2-factor authentication internationally and couldn't access my online CapitalOne account to monitor the fraud on the website. That is a...

Recurring charge fraud on CapitalOne MasterCard

I wanted to share an experience with fraud on our CapitalOne MasterCard. It was frustrating to say the least. We had two fraud charges hit one of our cards in mid-Jan (1/13) for Dinnerly and Ancestry.com. Called it in and Capital One created fraud investigation and removed the charges as is...

Birding by sound is something I'm working on was well. The other day I heard a few prairie warblers. For some reason, their song reminds me of a bouncing ball.
