If you live in or near New York, CitiGold checking account is awesome

Sounds like you made a good move. I also don't like to keep all of my eggs in one basket. I don't have that much in equities right now, just CDs and money markets. Maybe I will do the same when I get rid of a couple of rental properties. I would assume that Citi also has free stock trading...

If you live in or near New York, CitiGold checking account is awesome

Thanks for the heads up. I also like freebies, but before I join such a program, I want to know exactly what my investment options are. Their freebies are nice, but if their CDs and money markets are paying less than what I am now getting, I would be better off keeping my money where it is and...

Possible future elimination of step up basis

I agree with you that this has always been an unjustifiable freebie to heirs. Also, there has been talk of doing away with the 1031 exchanges, but there have been warnings that this move would crater the commercial real estate market.

Do you have a zero withdrawal rate?

As I see it, one can have a zero withdrawl rate if they take the income, but do not touch the principal. So if one has worked and accumulated a nest egg to retire on, then invests the nest egg in income producing things (stocks, bonds, CDs, real estate) there would be a zero withdrawl rate if...

    Buffets banks

Yes, and you will also get a lot of other banks that Buffett did not buy. I would rather buy the banks that Buffett picks, as he seems to know how to pick stocks, and some BRK, and not get all of those other banks in XLF that Buffett didn't pick.

    Buffets banks

I believe the first one he bought was USBank. Several times he has made statements to the effect that he thinks it is the best run bank in the country. As for Wells, I'd be surprised if he made a single cent on it so far. I don't think he counted on their executives being a bunch of liars...

Have you considered a CPA, attorney, or financial planner? Preferably a local one, but I have known people to use one in a distant city.

How much are your property taxes compared to your household income/FIRE budget?

I feel your pain. I'm in Philadelphia and properties are being reassessed. We don't know what the new figures will be yet, but real estate taxes could be as much as 35% of a retirement budget. We won't be staying in this house, but we also don't want to leave the area as we can be in Midtown...

Buying a little land for a home base...reasonable?

Would a storage shed on ten acres in the middle of nowhere be a safe place to store your stuff? I would be hesitant to put my belongings in such a place. How about putting a very small cabin on the land, in addition to the storage shed? Then you would meet the residency requirement for sure.

Real estate investments outside your hometown

+1 Yes, the problems are the people living in them, AND the laws that are in their favor and against the landlord. As several posters in this thread have pointed out, if you want to be successful in real estate investing, you need to keep the property occupied as much as possible. I could...

    Comparing Brokerages - seeking advice

You are absolutely right about Vanguard. They are great if you don't mind DIY. Also, I mentioned in another thread, about the great service that American Century gives. It is one of the best when it comes to customer service. www.americancentury.com

Check out: www.siebertnet.com and also www.sharebuilder.com It is not good to keep all of your eggs in one basket, but you don't need to go too far in the other direction, either, with too many accounts.

    Comparing Brokerages - seeking advice

Yes, you are thinking along the right lines, and you are wise to stick with mutual funds until you learn more about he market, and build up a decent sized portfolio. All of the companies mentioned in your original post are great companies with good customer service; you just have to determine...

    AirBnB Hosts?

You can come to my house anytime as my cat has kept the mice outside. Glad to hear your stay was good. One needs to keep in mind that if you are using AirBnB that you need to make reservations as far in advance as possible and it is always a crapshot as to what you will get. Most of the...

Travel Agents, Consolidators, etc. for Travel fromUSA to Australia and/or New Zealand

You are correct, everything one needs is online, and some of the best airfares are on the airlines own websites. I have always done all of my own travel planning, international and domestic. I am not a travel agent and I don't travel business or first class. As I see it, the options to...

    17" laptop recommendations

Three years ago I decided to upgrade from the ten year old Dell laptops that I was using. I bought two Sony Vaio laptops with the latest bells and whistles. They have had a lot of use, sometimes 24/7, and there have been no problems with good performance. :coolsmiley:

What Do You Buy at Dollar Tree?

I checked their website and I believe that their stores are only in the West, particularly CA. There are quite a few dollar stores in this area, including Family Dollar and Dollar General, but Dollar Tree is the only one where the price of everything is only one dollar. I never shopped at...

    AirBnB Hosts?

I have not rented mine out, but I know people who have and the list of places they went was endless. Some went to visit friends, relatives, or children, some went on vacation, some took business trips, some stayed with their SO who lived nearby, and others just spent a night or two in a big...

Is this the nail in the annuity coffin?

I thank you for your explanations. I apoligize if my question seemed kind of nosey, but I am an avid reader of two sub-forums, FIRE and Money, and Stock Picking, and am always interested in ideas on how people manage money and their investments. This topic particularly interested me because I...

Fidelity vs. Vanguard: Which is best?

Fidelity wins every time for customer service, before one even takes their walk in offices into consideration. Vanguard closed their walk in offices; they had several in the Philly area back in the 1990s. I really have to wonder about Vanguard's work environment as their customer service reps...
