Thanks for all the replies. Doing a quick check, most policies for $25,000 for a male my age run in the 50 to 60+ dollars a month range.

    Life Insurance Decision

I am currently 64 years old retired and divorced with three adult children. I have a comfortable pension and monthly expenses are thankfully not an issue for me at this time. The organization from which I retired was carrying $50,000 term life insurance for all its retirees. Last week I was...

    Dropped Cable TV Today

I heard HBO may offer in line with the Game of Thrones Season premier.. I can only hope.. the only thing I can't figure out how to get around is MSNBC, not sure if anyone knows of any options there, but I think I'm stuck either getting basic tv and paying for that or just dealing with not...

Gift Ideas for Visit to Ecuador

Hello Everybody, I am leaving in a little over a week to visit my daughter and her in-laws in Ecuador. I am flummoxed over what type of gift to bring the family members. The parents are in their sixties and my son-in-law has one brother about twenty. They are nice people and will extend to...

I agree with the folks who recommended the four wheel spinning luggage. The maneuverability in crowded airports is a plus.

Poll:When will/did you draw from SSA

I took the money at 62 an I have not looked back. SS with my pension (with an unlimited cola) gives me plenty of dough to have fun and not touch my small nest egg invested in stocks. I am divorced with my dad dying at 69 and my mom at 82. Right now I am in pretty good health, but like others...

    Whither goest the suburbs?

Thank you for starting such an interesting thread. The suburbs still depend of the cheap carbon hydro-fuel technologies that don’t (even with fracking) seem to have a long shelf life. As the costs of transportation increase, the suburbs will further lose their appeal. Fuel costs...

    Favorite TV series

This is indeed the "Second Golden Age" of television. I think the reason that the current crop of movies is generally so poor is that the best writers have gone to television. The Wire Treme Boardwalk Empire Sopranos Breaking Bad House of Cards Orange is the New Black Newsroom

COLA's pension - capped or not capped

I chose to pay more during my working career to get an unlimited COLA provision on my pension. Time will tell if that bet pays off.

    Suicide rates rise sharply

Getting laid off from a job in your fifties and burning through your retirement to pay your bills and keep your house out of foreclosure. Not availing yourself of medical care because you can't afford it. Sounds like a recipe for depression to me.

PBS Frontline: The Middle Class and the New American Economy

I found it sad, and it left with a feeling of personal gratitude for my career and the benefits that it provided. I was lucky -- no doubt about it. Just hard work is not always the answer -- all these people appeared to be hard workers. Also, no family in the U.S. should be one medical...

Ten things Social Security won't tell you

Social Security can be fixed; it is a math problem. You just need the political will to bring all sides to the table. If politicians start losing elections over funding, they will find a way to cut a deal. Medicare, to me, seems a more intractable problem.

What have you read recently? 2009 -2020

I am reading "The Unwinding" by George Packer. Reminds me of all the little people who paid the price for the unregulated Wall Street casino, we have learned nothing from the experience, and how another credit crisis looms on the horizon.

Case for taking SS early (62)?

I took ss at 62. Here were my reasons: a. With my pension and ss, I could live quite comfortably without tapping into my modest nest egg. Both have cola adjustments. b. I also figure that I can save between $8,000.00 and $10,000 a year from my current ss payments. c. I am divorced so I...

    Tax reduction strategies in ER

I am on a pension and SS. I guess I could look into purchasing a rental since I don't own any real estate. Don't know if I want that hassle. Considering the alternative, I try not obsess too much over my tax bill. I consider myself lucky and extremely grateful.
