    6th SWFL ER.org Get-together

I am bummed out. Woke up Friday with a head cold and sore throat. Luckily covid test was negative. Was hoping I would feel better by this morning, but actually feel worse today. I was looking forward to putting face to names, but probably best for me to sit this one out and shoot for next...

    6th SWFL ER.org Get-together

I would like to attend. It would be my first meetup, and perfect timing since we are in our first full year of retirement and wintering in FL. Either date works for me. It would be just me coming from Venice, so Sarasota works well.

    Minor Pension Decision

Thanks for the analysis. It would seem that with a current lump sum of $57,000 it would be an even more financially optimal to take the lump sum and purchase the immediate annuity rather than taking the pension.

    Minor Pension Decision

Thanks for all the input. It is all very helpful. I probably should have put the current lump sum payout in the initial post. I just looked and the current payout would be $57,806 now, or $67,943 at age 65.

    Minor Pension Decision

I have a small pension from an employer that stopped contributing to it years ago. I realize the amount is small, and it probably doesn't mater much, but I was looking at the numbers there other day. Current age 50, DW 56 Assume average life expectancy NO COLA 100% survivor benefit Take...

Just check my Toyota income driver notes, and it looks like they lowered the rate to 1.15% from 1.35% this month. :(

Online only Banks & I-bonds - Ally Bank

We have an existing Treasury Direct account. We were able to add an Ally account and Fidelity CMA account without problems. We had to get the Medallion stamp at a local Fidelity office, and mail it in which took about 3 weeks.

I have $150K in my HSA. Use it to pay for COBRA?

It is my understanding HSA funds can not be used for ACA premiums, only COBRA premiums.

Modelling when to take Social Security and other pensions

The biggest factor for us is spousal survivor benefits. We are delaying the larger benefit to age 70 to provide the largest spousal survivor benefit. The other benefit we may or may not take earlier than 70.

Rule of 55 and returning to same employer

The more I think about it, it would probably be disallowed by the plan as it would then be considered an in service withdrawal.

Rule of 55 and returning to same employer

If allowed, the plan would be to continue to use the rule of 55 to withdraw funds prior to 59.5. No new 403b would be started.

Rule of 55 and returning to same employer

I have searched the internet, and could not find an answer to this question. Let's say someone separates from service in the year they turn 55, and then starts to withdraw funds from their 401k/403b penalty free under the rule of 55. That person then, at some point, returns to that employer as...

I understand the fear of ER

That is definitely something that stokes the fears. The one thing that makes me feel a little better is we have built a pretty good cash buffer in case of a downturn right after retirement. I will probably put it in some MYGAs, after our financial planner review.

I understand the fear of ER

I realize I didn’t really give any details. I think I was looking to vent my fears to others who probably had some of the same fears. I think our plan is solid, with a lot of cushion, making most of our fears unnecessary. But that doesn’t keep those fears out of the back of my head.

I understand the fear of ER

I finally can empathize with all the threads I have read over the years about people’s fears when it comes time to retire. My wife and I have been working part time these last couple years, with plans on retiring when she turns 55 at the beginning of next year, at which time I will be 48. We...

Holding $600K in cash - feeling like an idiot. Options???

Don't feel stupid. We are in a similar situation. We are thinking of retiring in January, and have also increased our cash to 600K in preparation. Right now we have 500K in no penalty CDs at Ally, and have opened an account at Live Oak for a 100K cd that is maturing soon. I have looked at...

    HSA strategies?

    Spin bikes - your recommendations?

I recommend getting one that uses magnetic resistance vs one that uses friction. They are much smoother. I was able to score one in that price range off of craigslist in like new condition. It was from a company that purchased a bunch of them from a gym, so they were high end models. Might...

Looking for a fixed fee financial planner in N. IL/S. WI to review our plan

We used a Garret Network Planner in SE WI a couple years back. I more wanted a second opinion, and the wife was considering going part time. We were happy with the service, and no attempt to sell anything or AUM. Just a one time fee. I will send you more detailed info via PM.

    ltc insurance

I listen to their podcasts, and I really like them. Their recent podcasts on LTC, have made rethink the possibility of some form of LTC insurance. I had always thought of the house as a backup plan, but that will do little good if either I or the wife needs LTC first. One important point he...

    Covid Vaccine Distribution

I heard someone joke that they should train Amazon delivery drivers to administer the vaccines. You could get the vaccine at the same time they delivered your amazon order. Most of the country would be vaccinated in no time. Obviously a joke, but sure would be nice.

That makes more sense. I could not figure out how they came up with the 95% effective. Never had a statistics class in college.
