    Share your FIRE Milestones - 2013- 2020

Yes land prices (it's a corn/soybean farm in Illinois) have increased significantly, which is great, but they obviously can and likely will drop at some point. I believe they have somewhat in 2015. What I own is 1/4th of a farm originally purchased by my great (great?) grandfather that was...

Recent good idea's to save $

My wife joined (and is now the administrator of) our local chapter of the "Buy Nothing" group on facebook. Members give away things they don't want, and post messages asking for things they do. She's gotten a crazy amount of free stuff including a new dining room table, a great computer desk...

    Getting started at age 18

Best of luck to you on whatever path you take! Since you want to retire in your 30's, this will of course require a combination of both aggressive savings and frugal living. But is your plan to live frugally now, continue this while you save, and then retire living the same spartan lifestyle...

Hi again Andre, I mentioned previously how we're in a similar situation (age and investment assets). I noticed that you're in the class of 2014. So have you retired? Is it still happening this year? Just curious what the rest of your financial picture looks like. Things like if you have a...

Should I sell the house and invest the equity?

I see no reason to not include home equity in your net worth calculations. Your home is an asset, why not count it? Half of my net worth (home equity for my paid off home, and some farmland) is outside of my investment accounts, so I certainly prefer to include these assets when I calculate my...

Nice. Were you under water on the mortgage a five years ago? If not, then I wouldn't consider you to have had a negative net worth. Yes you had the mortgage debt, but you also has the asset (the home) in your possession.

Congratulations on this. I've mostly been a lurker here, but have been following your progress in particular because I believe we're the same age (45?) with a similar amount of investments. It's great that you broke through the one million barrier. Hopefully I'll be able to do the same someday. :)

I Sold My lAST SHARE OF STOCK TODAY

Simple is good. So your entire equity position is in the Vanguard fund? Is it VTI? Care to share your age and what else (such as bond funds) you might be holding? I'm always interested in hearing about the mix of investments people are holding at different ages. Myself (at age 45) I have a...

Thanks, it is indeed very nice knowing that I most likely will never have another house payment, and I really wanted the psychological reward. I understand there are tax benefits, and potential better investment returns possible when holding a mortgage, but it always seemed crazy to me that...

We paid off the mortgage on our house today! We had $22,000 left to pay but I just decided "screw it, I want to be done NOW". The downside is that the million dollar portfolio goal is now that much further away. We also (unfortunately) had to withdraw $10,000 to pay of our credit card that...

Your avg yearly savings over the course of your career

45 years old. $947,000/23 years working= $41,173/yr meh If I add the home equity: $1,385,000/23 years working= $66,217/yr Not so bad, but I do have a tendency to always be a little disappointed in myself. Does anyone else feel this way? One the one hand, I know that given my age, and the...

    Exuberant yet?

So this was a buy above the 200 EMA and sell below? I don't think that's the best way to use the moving average. Many use a long average and short average. So you buy when the short average crosses above the long average. In the example shown it uses a 77 day short average, a 110 day long...

    Exuberant yet?

Hello, Can I ask what you use to determine when the market is overbought? Do you have any hard and fast rules that you follow? I ask because I've tried to do the same at times with mixed results. It's so easy to be wrong about such things. What do you folks think about using the Moving...

Hello all, I'm new here. First off, I'm truly impressed by all of you! So far I've never paid much attention to any particular milestones and haven't set any specific goals for ones I want to reach and when. I'm 44, and my wife is 39. Stocks/401K/IRA: $857,000 (I guess passing 850k this...
