    457b or brokerage?

My 403b is Vanguard. Very low fees. I need to convince my HR department to research additional 457 providers.

    457b or brokerage?

Great questions. I work in a school district. I can contribute $18.5k into my 403b (I already do) AND $18.5k into a 457. I will have a pension starting at age 60. I also will be able to access my retirement accounts at 59.5 years old. I’m trying to figure out best vehicle to use to provide...

    457b or brokerage?

Hi everyone. My wife maxes her 401k. I max my 403b. I have the option to also open a 457b, but I’m not sure if I want to contribute to that or just a brokerage account. We are 36 and plan to “retire” at 50. I need to fund age 50-60. Here’s my question: When I reach age 50, I can either 72t from...

    Asset Allocation resources?

A few years ago I read a book that discusses AA and gave example AAs for different timelines and risk tolerance. I’ve based my AA off that book. Now I can’t seem to remember the title. I want to revisit the “why” of my selected AA to see if I want to change it up. I find that I’m for more...

    milestone reached!

We're at about $430k. Getting closer, but my etfs have only returned about 2% since July. I guess when you average it with 2013 returns, it's not so bad. We're at the significant point in investing where our available cash is not enough to patch holes when the market downturns. The volatility...

I was able to throw some cash at it during the downturn. I'll have some more next week to throw in. My spreadsheet still shows that I'll be OK to retire at 50. Sent from my iPhone using Early Retirement Forum

The roller coaster continues... Today we made it back up over the 400k mark. Hopefully this threshold will stick now. Sent from my iPhone using Early Retirement Forum

I know we're ahead of others. We just really want to be FIREd by 50 with plenty of money to travel. Sent from my iPhone using Early Retirement Forum

    milestone reached!

Well, after a few months of mixed returns... we're way back at $387,000. We've been contributing more to try and stop the drop in account values, but nothing seems to help. I know prices will go back up eventually, which is why I keep buying now because I'm getting a better deal on the etfs...

    Taxes on Roth in retirement?

Sorry, "taxed as regular income" Sent from my iPhone using Early Retirement Forum

    Taxes on Roth in retirement?

How are Roth withdrawals taxed after 59.5? If they are races as income, doesn't it make more sense to contribute in taxable account into ETFs? Then withdrawals in retirement are taxed at long term gain rate, which is lower than income tax rate. Sent from my iPhone using Early Retirement Forum

Thanks. We are invested in broad market ETFs. Pretty aggressive asset allocation. I hope we get there sooner than our goal!

We passed the 400K mark today! DW and I are both 32. We're almost one year ahead of our savings goals to reach FI. Only 18 years left!

    Roth IRA vs brokerage

My wife and I are at a point that we have enough money in our retirement accounts to grow for 28 years and provide a comfortable retirement at age 60. We'd like to retire at 50, though. I've been putting money into a brokerage account to fun age 50-60, but I hate the idea if paying taxes on my...

Best book to learn about asset allocation

I read a book a few years back that was great at explaining what type of asset allocation I should have based on my risk tolerance and years left before retirement. I can't remember the title of the book. Anybody have suggestions of books I should look at the determine my correct asset allocation?

    How's this plan?

Hi Everyone, DW and I are 32. We wish to RE at 50. I will be fortunate enough to have a pension of $120,000 when I reach 55. My plan is to fund age 50-60 with taxable brokerage account (and the pension when it kicks in at 55). Then, fund 60-death with retirement accounts and pension. We are...

    31 yr olds & sabbatical

Thanks for the replies. I'm only hesitant because we've made such great progress with retirement savings and this adventure would put us back 2 years. But, we are ahead of the plan, so it probably won't affect ER.

    31 yr olds & sabbatical

My wife and I are both 31. We have about 300k in 401k/IRA and about 60K in taxable account. I will have a pension worth about 60% of pre-retirement income. She has an opportunity to work overseas for 18 months to gain international experience. I'm considering taking a sabbatical from work to go...
