    Class of 2023

Last work day was 30 Nov, enjoyed a going away party yesterday. Enjoyed work but I am now Financially Independent. We are set with pensions over $92K a year, great healthcare, and $670K in Roth/IRAs. We owe about 20K on our home worth $750K, no rush paying off loan at 3.1%. Healthy at age...

    Class of 2022

Moving from Class of 2021 to the Class of 2022. I have worked so much many extra hours and overtime in Public Health Emergency Response in 2020 that I see a future working from home 2-3 days a week and I have so much time built up for plenty of vacations. I will be Financially Independent in...

    Class of 2021

I enjoy my job but as I get closer to Dec 21 FIRE, I really don't like going into the office 5 days a week (not every week as I do travel at least once a month) so I asked to work from home every Wednesday. They said yes! Makes it easier knowing that I will only work the next 23 months but now...

    Another 'great' experience with USAA

I have had USAA over 30 years but I have slowly moved all services away from the company. They brag about how good they are and spend nonstop money to advertise. Car Insurance cost were outrageous compared to Geico who is very pro military. Forget about home insurance, way too expensive...

    Class of 2021

Excited that 2021 is only 3 years away. Financial goal this year is to hit net worth of 900K. I retire in late 2021 with two pensions equal to 66K a year. I will turn 60 in 2010. I am taking SS at 62 as I had children late in life, better payout early. Still considering part-time work, maybe...

Retire early vs work to leave for kids

Why do you want to leave children money? This is not typical. You need insurance to provide for family while you are the source of there financial security. I would retire early to spend more time with each child, or support their passions and desires in life but not for money.

    Saving Money on Wireless Service

Everybody needs to get over their love affair with ATT, Sprint, Verizon, and T-Mobile. In general they are all great networks. Maybe your leave in the country and in this case your neighbors will tell you what Network to buy. Secondly buy older or used phones. For example, an IPhone 5S works...

59 planning to retire at 62 with an unconventional? withdrawal strategy

Without knowing any numbers few would agree to a 8-10% withdrawal rate. Why can't you plan travel budget based on 4-6% withdrawal rate.? How much can you reduce your daily living cost before you travel i.e. no mortgage/rent, no car insurance, no utilities, etc. Perhaps travel won't be such a...

Late 50s, retirement in view, but still murky

Unless your whole life revolves around your job, you will be happy with the flexibility when you retire. You will be useful to others who need help through volunteering, church, etc. You will find new hobbies and passions. As far as the needed income, I think I will need as much when I retire...

Hi! Turning 57, retiring, and moving to the lake! Any absentee landlords out there?

I prefer buying a home warranty to take care of the frantic calls. Not sure what the property manager at $75 to 10% of rental cost gets you for your money. If the A/C blows up my policy replaces it for $75. The $610 a year buys me peace. Besides that I include lawn service in the rent so that it...

    Class of 2021

December 2021 for me. I enjoy my job but I want to get away from the 40 hours in the office or on the road. I will fire with two pensions (67K a year) and hopefully IRA/401K around 600K. We have a rental property also that brings in income. Plenty of health insurance at low cost (retired...

Naval Officer looking to ER in 2016

SBP is too costly, I believe a healthy person will find a far superior Term life insurance policy for 30 years. I pay about $140 a month for 30 years of term, $600k. Far cheaper than the the SBP that goes up in cost as your pension increase. You owe it to yourself to see how much term you could...

Naval Officer looking to ER in 2016

Retired Naval Officer Will you leave your 401K, TSP, IRA untouched until at least 59 1/2? I assume there would be an extra 10% tax penalty if you withdrawal early. How much do you live on now? Would you only live on 70K a year? I retire from the state in 6 years to go along with my military...

    Anyone use a prepaid phone?

We bought used iPhones on Craiglist 2 years ago for about $200 each. We use Pageplus, $29 a month or less with discounts each, no taxes. 3000 text a month, 1200 minutes, 500 Mb of data on Verizon network. Why people pay so much for sprint, T-Mobile, at, Verizon boggles my mind. Sent from my...
