Anyone else NOT watch the news?

I find it interesting that retired folks care about traffic and weather. Weather: I have three weather apps on my phone. They are all contradictory and rarely are any of them accurate. I use all three as general guidance for planning my day/week. Traffic: Waze is an awesome app. Pop in...

Anyone else NOT watch the news?

I agree with what you say except the bolded. We (the viewers) can't demand accurate, unbiased reporting. Well, we can but who is going to listen. I don't want to hear what "my tribe" is saying. I want to hear the unbiased truth and then I'll form my opinion. We are divided because the news...

    First million is enough

^ location dependent for middle class is spot on. My DD and her husband make almost exactly what my DS and his wife make. DS and his wife are in San Diego. They are barely scraping by renting a 2/1 house for $3300/month. DD and her man own a 3/2 house here in Southern MD. Their mortgage is...

    First million is enough

I've been FI since 2010 and RE for 14 months now. 57 was a good age to retire for me. DW is 52 and would like to work 21 more months to get her into her yr 55 for grabbing 401k if she wants to. We have only around 700k investable. Here's the thing, we don't need any of it. 2 military...

    New Car Dealer REQUIRES Financing

Interesting. DW just bought a fully loaded Kia Carnival. One thing Kia doesn't do well is trade with other dealerships. We had to drive by 3 Kia dealerships to get to the one that had the vehicle she wanted. We were preapproved through USAA. We pay the payment for about 3-6 months then pay...

LeBron James - played a long time

I can't remember when he was an all star. Who is he? What is the NBA? So confused. I had a turkey sandwich for lunch.

Maybe some opportunity for ROTH conversions before the dreaded RMD's happen at 72. Good luck to you.

REtiring early at 57 and scared

Basement, Welcome. Yes, you can do it. Thanks for your service BTW. I retired last year at 57. I see you mention your spouse. I was going to tell you to go to the VA for medical but that won't help your wife. Also, it has been a long time but if you haven't done it, put in a VA disability...

    So grateful for the ACA

Thanks Mods. Awesome job as usual We don't use ACA as we are both retired military. I am glad this country has the ACA. My hope is that we can tweak it. It is OK but can be so much better. I do believe in some form of basic health care for all people.

    Solo Vacations

We only plan the big stuff. The flight. The transpo from the airport to our hotel. We scout out some potential eating places. May make a res or 2 for a week stay. We are the same way with our budget/finances. We have both learned over 30 years that we are not that anal. Had occasions...

Retire from the Navy in 2017

Alright Hawk. Here is the plan: Fixer and I will come up and meet you for lunch in Crystal city. After lunch you can take us in and meet your boss. Fixer and I will file a complaint with HR and before you know it security will be escorting you to the door. Problem solved.

    5 years to go..max!

Without knowing those exact #'s and your expenses and needs (in retirement) in general I would say only contribute to 401K's to get the company match. The next investment dollars should go to HSA then taxable accounts. ROTH is you want to or wait and do ROTH conversions when you are in a lower...

Air Force fly boys - a question

Since you are best friends with a Marine, it's good to know that we always capitalize the word Marine. Yes, we are weird like that. Semper Fi! BTW, what did your Marine best friend fly? DW and I are both USMC(Ret) aircraft maintenance officers.

    1/5 fire...

DW has talked about this too. Not sure if the government will go along with this plan. As a contractor I switched to a 4-day, 32 hour/wk schedule my last year and a half. Loved it. I think scaling down near the end is a good transition into retirement.

    5 years to go..max!

Covered in other threads but basically many ways to NOT pay full boat for college. #1. Not legally bound to pay for children's college. #2. Have them take as many college credits while still in HS. I had one semester under my belt when I graduated HS. And it was free. #3. CC/junior...

    1/5 fire...

Good for you guys. We are in transition also. I pulled the full time plug 54 weeks ago. DW is/was planning on 22 more months working 9 days every 2 weeks. After seeing her with our 13 week old DGD I don't know if she'll make it 22 more months. I'm quickly developing plans B, C and D. One...

Examples of current inflation - add yours!

Wait a darn minute. Are you telling me that in 2003 and again in 2007/2008 when I was standing around the burn pits in Iraq and there was a few pallets of bottled water simmering in the 128 degree heat for days that my biggest worry 20 years later would be the plastic breaking down and...

Getting an elderly parent to give up living alone

Good luck and God bless. Many on here have dealt with ageing/sick family members. Never easy. I would suggest getting a call button system. You know the old advertisement "I've fallen and I can't get up". There may be some local services available to check on her daily. The time to talk to...

Would it be better to take Social Security at 62?

And this^ is why the 62-70 question is different for not only each couple but for each person. No survivor beni for me or DW. Our career earning will be almost identical. Her's may be a tad larger depending on when she actually pulls the plug. No need for a larger payout to cover LTC later...

    Who Are Your Friends?

Best friend from kindergarten lived across the street. He was the pitcher I was the first baseman. He was the quarterback I was the WR. He was the point guard I was the center. Played in mutiple state finals for hoops. Only see him about once per year now that we are on different coasts...

We just returned form Aruba. Loved it. Airbnb at 100-200/night. People were super friendly to the tourists. We love St Croix and it's USA so we like that. Good luck.

I enjoyed an all-inclusive dive resort there but would not leave the resort on my own. Definitely didn't feel safe out in town.
