Part time work in addition to full time work

I have to agree, working two jobs suck. About 22 years ago, I worked a full time corporate job and appraised real estate on the side, and did miss a lot of family time. That only lasted 2 years. I think my 401K portfolio is pretty stock heavy in Mutual Funds diversity. We've all seen what...

Part time work in addition to full time work

Thanks for the feedback. I did buy a few recommended book from this page with that same idea... with the theme to retire with a lot less than what most consider necessary.

Part time work in addition to full time work

I like your thinking and attitude! I'm all ears for guidance, suggestions, and recommendations... because I would rather not work a second job if I don't have to. :)

Part time work in addition to full time work

Lol... I thought I was doing well in my early retirement plan at 53 until I joined this site. The 401K is at $930,000 and I don't have major expenses, but the more I learn from this Forum site (great site btw) and reading the recommended books, I may fall short of my goal. Ugh... what can I do...

Part time work in addition to full time work

With our common goal of early retirement and financial independence, we can lower our expenses, reduce debt, and increase our retirement savings. The thought has crossed my mind to look for supplemental part time work in addition to my full time job (work from home - same employer for over 24...

My heart cries early retirement, my head is confused

Nice post JohnnTexas! You seem very solid with your numbers. I figured that I need to work until my youngest son either graduates colleges and gets a good job, or when he turns 26...so he can remain insured under my company health insurance plan.

My heart cries early retirement, my head is confused

Interesting...to plan for the age 90. I had a Grandfather and Great Grandmother who lived to 98. I guess if we outlive our projected life expectancy, we can live with our kids.

My heart cries early retirement, my head is confused

I am starting to read the books recommended by our Forum site. and they are very helpful and great books. I find it strange that we have to determine our expected life span, like that is really possible. Are we saying, plan your retirement on an estimated expected life span, so we don't run out...

Mutual Fund choices in a 401K - help please...

Well said and great advice! I will continue to study and learn from those books and this forum site! I do observe that many people in general react or over-react to the market verses sticking to a well grounded long term plan and strategy. I do realize that nobody can predict the future. Thanks...

Mutual Fund choices in a 401K - help please...

I only talked to my Principal representative 3 times in 5 years... kind of generic advice which they run retirement scenarios for you and save it on their web site. I almost think she just wants to keep you as a client when I retire, because she doesn't get paid commissions when she helps me...

Mutual Fund choices in a 401K - help please...

Thank you for the help and guidance. My plan has a bunch of JP Morgan Smart Retirement 20** I Fund based on targeted retirement date. I personally selected 2020 and 2025 based on my estimated anticipated retirement date (maybe in 5 years if possible?) Yeah... I think you are right with the a...

Mutual Fund choices in a 401K - help please...

Thanks for the feedback...much appreciated. Yeah the balanced target fund of 2020 will have more bonds than the one targeted for 2025. We can select international mutual funds which I don't do to higher risk. My Principle representative thinks that I'm too stock heavy and don't have enough...

Mutual Fund choices in a 401K - help please...

Here is my 401K mix in case you see a red flag or want to comment: 57% Balance/Asset Allocation - 2 target date Mutual funds - years 2020 and 2025 23% Large U.S Equity - 4 mutual funds with diversity 20% Small/Mid U.S. Equity - 6 mutual funds with diversity

Mutual Fund choices in a 401K - help please...

Through the Principle Financial Group we have an assigned financial advisor who I have spoken with over the last several years. I never liked her guidance, and out of pure novice choices and positive market condition, I think I did much better in the last 6 to 8 years than if I would have taken...

Mutual Fund choices in a 401K - help please...

As we all know, 401K investment choices are limited to what our employers choose in our specific plan. I’m sure our choices include considering our target retirement date, our age, and diversity of mutual funds in category and type. How do you or would you diversify your mutual fund selection...

My heart cries early retirement, my head is confused

It's tough to even plan for retirement with my company 401K plan being my primary means to retire. For instance, when Obama was first elected, the stock market crashed, and my 401K was something like $300,000 or so (don't remember). Today, that same portfolio with your typical 6% contribution...

My heart cries early retirement, my head is confused

Thanks for the warm welcome and solid advice and guidance 38Chevy. I sure wish life was simpler like the previous generation where people retired with a pension. This 401k alternative makes retirement much more complicated, and maybe even dependent on the market for the next decade.

    Long Term Care strategies...?

That made me laugh and put a smile on my face... great point. I guess it all depends on what kind of insurance is peddled. I think life insurance is extremely profitable. LTC insurance products just need to get better for us the consumer.

    Long Term Care strategies...?

Great point, I have been in the insurance industry for the last 29 year, primarily in loss prevention and risk assessment end of things. Insurance is a misunderstood industry, and can be not very consumer friendly at time and I believe does require government regulators. Certain kinds of...

    Long Term Care strategies...?

Maybe the LTC insurance products need to be more consumer equitable with some market competition and possible government regulation on the product? It kind of reminds me of that whole life insurance products people typically purchased instead of pure term life insurance.

    Long Term Care strategies...?

Thanks for the suggestion for an elder lawyer, and when the time comes, I should seek professional advice. Both my parents and father-in-law are not yet at that stage that requires our care (all in their 80s), but my wife and I would be the primary siblings to care for all of them. I'm just...

    Long Term Care strategies...?

Maybe all insurance products are a waste a money until you need it? It's a gamble and a peace of mind choice or in some cases, certain insurance products can be required by law or by a lender.
