2nd home/cabin etc. How'd you decide to pull the trigger?

We were able to pay cash for a modest place in So FL in 2011 when the price was still near the bottom. It would have been harder to take the leap in today’s market. I was also still w*rking then with nice income, so that made it easier. It’s been a great decision. Value of the house is way up...

    Wealthfront cash account

I searched the site and found a few mentions, but not really seeing anyone using them for the 2.57% cash. (May have missed it). Any reviews? Concerns? Thanks!

HSA newbie question for married couple

2019 is our first time being eligible for an HSA and have a question. As I understand it, I can open just one account and fund it for $7K or open two accounts split them however I choose, up to $7K. And I can pay medical expenses for either of us with the one account. We will be funding from...

    Blow that Dough! - 2018

Just spent a lot of dough on a new boat. It’s my first large purchase since retirement. It felt a little weird, but I got over it. Looking forward to my new hobby of fishing the backwater and offshore in south Florida.

    Cobra vs ACA

The way I read this...I could drop Cobra and pick up ACA outside the open enrollment because my former employer will have stopped contributing to my plan as of Jan 31. That’s a change of status.

    Cobra vs ACA

Something I hadn’t considered. That’s why I come here!!! Thanks...I’ll add to the equation.

    Cobra vs ACA

Under would give me about $1100mo subsidy so roughly $200 vs $1300 on premiums. Total out of pocket estimate is a little tricky. We’re unpredictable on volume of medical visits, but I’m guessing about a wash on coverage costs after premiums.

    Cobra vs ACA

I have a decision coming up during open enrollment. Old Mega is currently paying 100% of my Cobra thru end of Jan 2019. Then, I have the choice to continue Cobra thru Nov 2019. (18 months after I left). Or, I can go with ACA for all of ‘19. I’ll be on the MAGI cliff. So close that I can’t be...

    ACA...TN vs FL residency?

Thanks...yes my limited research was using the zip codes for both houses on Sherpa. I didn’t see that BCBS had the 2019 site up for browsing. I’ll check that out.

    ACA...TN vs FL residency?

We split time between these two states and currently TN residents. In the not so distant future, we will lose medical coverage after recently joining the FIRE class of 2018. (I can stay on Cobra thru 2019 if it makes sense) I have done some preliminary research on the available plans, cost...

    Newbie

Well, I certainly hope you’re good because I could have just about written your post. Almost the same stats across the board just a slightly different mix. Age, asset total, spend levels, etc all same. Pulled the plug in April myself.

My forum visits have dropped after FIRE

Before I retired, I probably visited this forum 4 or 5 times a day (a lot of those from w*rk). I was obsessed with it and with FIRE in general. I pulled the plug last month and now I’m probably checking in less than twice a week. It’s not that I don’t have time. It seems more like a goal was...

    Class of 2018

Put me down for 2018. As some of you may have read in another post, I have accepted a severance and will leave Mega in late April. Base and Cobra company paid until next March. I was planning to hold out OMY or maybe two, but the package offer made it a pretty easy decision. Ready to start...

Decision time with a package on the table

I’ve decided to take the deal. Full salary and healthcare until Feb ‘19. As expected on this forum, there was mostly a “go” sentiment. All of which made sense to me. Too much risk in staying and losing the deal especially with a planned exit in less than 2 years anyway. Thanks for all the...

Decision time with a package on the table

I’ve actually been very fortunate (lucky is a better word maybe). I didn’t follow that advice and I held for years...just started exercising them seriously over the last 3 or 4 years during stock highs. That decision has advanced my RE timeline by many years. I do have some exposure if I wait...

Decision time with a package on the table

There wouldn’t be a non-compete, but I’m not really planning to explore anything in my current field yet. The nature of my field would allow me to go with other companies but probably not on a part-time basis. I’m hoping to use this opportunity to jump out of the 50 hour week. My most likely...

Decision time with a package on the table

Here’s a copy of my Hello post from a couple years ago. The numbers have changed slightly up but not significantly. It should provide at least a little more perspective for those that said not enough info.

Decision time with a package on the table

Thanks for the reply. I would say that’s an absolute possibility in my case as well. Definitely one of the variables I’m considering.

Decision time with a package on the table

My plan was to semi-retire within the next 12-24 months. Staying that long was solely a financial based idea to pad the dollars and make the ride a little less stressful . I’m less and less motived by the j*b itself., but the comp and benefits are good. I very recently got the call to HR. A...

    Property Tax Question

The assessed value of my home in SW Florida is roughly 78% of the actual value. So, similar to your situation now. I’m basing the actual value on known sales of like property in my neighborhood very recently. So it’s an estimate. Also, as a Florida resident you would get a homestead deduction...

    Tax or no tax event?

Yes...this. And several other responses answered the question that each fund is independent and the funds in the account aren't tied together. I appreciate the confirmation. That's how I assumed it worked, but wasn't 100%.

    Tax or no tax event?

I'm sure this is investing 101, but I'm second guessing the way I believe this works. Let's say you open an after tax account and spread the dollars over 4 mutual funds. Three of the funds increase in value. One fund stays flat or has a slight loss. You have never rebalanced or transferred...
