What "phase" of retirement are you in?

After retiring in Oct 2O20, I think I go between 2 and 3. Just recently both my wife and I figured out that our passion for motorcycling has faded and time to let others enjoy our two motorcycles. More room in the garage and closet (gear). More of my time is spent in 3; trying new things...

Line Up for Cheaper Gas at Costco or Walmart?

With all the talk about gas prices going up, people expecting someone else to do something about it, I wish people would instead do what they can to save gas/oil. Eg: stop using the remote starter to preheat/cool the car for 10 minutes, turn home thermostats down/up to conserve energy, stop...

    Dual citizenship

I was born in Canada, living in the USA since 1978 and recently with my daughters (born in USA) permission applied for her Canadian citizenship almost 1 year ago. They are processing these as a lower priority than other citizenships due to COVID staffing issues. She’s ok with that. She may...

$400 Billion Futuristic City to be built by 2030 - Interested in Living here?

Interesting but not far enough for me. Who would govern? How to ensure powerful people don’t control it? I would like something more like the Venus Project that is self contained, everyone has a true say in policy, no capitalism, volunteerism not forced work, maximize automation, no taking...

Can we have a discussion on security cameras?

ARLO seems to work for us as low cost solution (no monthly fee) and includes 30 days of cloud storage (need to download if you want to keep the recordings before they individually expire). It does sound and motion but does get a few false alerts (shadows from car lights or sun/trees) and normal...

What and how was your experience of breaking the news to your employer about leaving?

I worked my last 5 full time years in the mental health field. A hard job emotionally but very rewarding to be part of helping change a persons life. When I gave a generous 3 month notice, my boss and I shed tears. They tried to get me to change my mind but they could see I was serious about...

How much help for young adult children?

Lots of strong emotions in these replies. It’s a sensitive topic. Our daughter has a job that she absolutely loves but it doesn’t pay well. She is following her passion and is very happy. We are happy for her. Her boyfriend that lives with her isn’t very happy with his work and it doesn’t...

    Fun "inexpensive" hobbies

Brewing beer. My wife and I are long time lovers of craft beer since the late 1980s. We drink about 1 beer a day each; not big consumers but enjoy the variety. Today more than ever (compared to when I started brewing in the 1980s) there is much more variety of malts, yeasts, other adjuncts...

    Family Traditions That Fade Away

With our folks in their 80s and dad with Alzheimer’s we recognized a need to bring the family together more often so we started celebrating all the holidays together. It has brought us closer and much appreciated by our folks. We did give up a few years ago our annual New England Xmas...

    Would you file for unemployment?

Sure, many choices out there to give money to people in need.

    Would you file for unemployment?

I decided to not take unemployment that I could have taken. I was retiring, did not need or want the money. I left it for others who really need it.

What changes/sacrifices have you made so that you can have ER/FIRE?

FYI - the “Jones’s” are broke.

What changes/sacrifices have you made so that you can have ER/FIRE?

Paid off all loans Focused on being happy with less Any money saved, put towards our early retirement funds Got rid of cable one step at a time. Never regretted at each step Limited meals out to once a month Bought our first house (1,700 sq ft) 31 years ago and never left Put solar on our roof...

How has your retirement spending differed from your projections?

About 30% more than planned but the market has been doing so well that it hasn’t bothered us. Restarting some old hobbies, buying hobby items that I always wanted. That’s ok though. Fixing things in the house that before retirement I would have postponed (ice maker).

Retired techies, are you still engaged in tech?

I worked in IT for 25 years; mostly programming but also later QA and IT Security. No interest anymore but I’m glad I have the background to understand things. More focused on travel and renewing my home brewing hobby.

How long did your parents work?

My wife and I worked only 37 years. But I say that with acknowledgment of plenty of privilege growing up (two parents, always food on the table, white, me - male, some financial assistance along the way, likely inherited wealth, low crime neighborhoods). My Dad worked 55 years and loved it...

Undereducated and misdirected in life. Help.

It looks like your expenses are nice and low. To prep for retirement my wife and I looked at our spending and slowly cut back on things to see what we missed doing. No more cable, only Netflix. Going out for dinner or meals is reduced to once a month or less. The rest all home cooked...

    Happier in retirement?

Retired July 2020. I feel no work stress which is good. I do feel some stress/anxiety as I am still transitioning from go-go work to a slower pace. Over the summer I got mostly caught up on house projects. Then Nov 4-Dec 15 we camped in our small RV heading to Florida and visited our parents...

    Paranormal Experiences?

When our daughter was about 8 she was sleeping in her room but awakened by walking in the hallway. She had to go to the bathroom but was scared to get out of bed. Once the footsteps stopped she went to the bathroom. We have a Hollywood on suite bathroom where one door leads to the hallway and...

What is on your Christmas list?

Just time with family. I have everything else I need. If I do take up a new hobby, I’ll buy the equipment myself.

    Thoughts about Retirement Communities?

Both our parents live in 55 plus communities. When they first moved in they were one of the youngest at 55 years of age and 64 respectively, made great friends, active in the community events, part of boards. In both communities we see more people passing away and the community as a whole...

Driving Becoming Dangerous - What to Do?

I agree having these difficult conversations with parents is needed and ASAP so people do not die or are injured. We did that with my dad but he still wouldn’t listen. We eventually worked “the process” via the Florida DMV but that did take 2 months. In the interim we managed to do most of...

Driving Becoming Dangerous - What to Do?

We went through this with my dad after he continued to demonstrate dangerous decisions when driving. When he was in his mid 70s his car began having unexplained small dents as did the garage, other cars, parking lot signs. His reading ability also declined (and is near 0 at 82). The eye...
