Should I bite on this checking account upgrade offer?

IMO, this would not be "prudent".

    Flood protection

I lived in subdivision in the Houston area for many years and did think once, if the street flooding got so bad would it make sense to place a board across the front door entry area to knock down the wake from big trucks driving down the street. It never got any where near an issue for us, but...

A Friend in need , how can I help

Good Luck. I suspect they will think a good friend would just give them the counseling money, since they view money as what they really need. Sad.

Walmart limit one Sodastream cartridge per day

About 15 to 20 years ago at Megacorp, we sold our hydrogen plant CO2 vent to a carbonated bottler (not sure what the final carbonation product was). Of course, we took an environmental victory lap for our emission reduction in CO2. I have no idea if/how the downstream buyer removed the...

    Texas Teacher Retirement/other options?

+1. Maybe Pueblo, CO? IMO, many of the lower COL locations in CO, will likely have the same school politics that you are experiencing now.

    Condo common area cleaning dilemma

Wow, no issues for 30 years. That is amazing to me, unless the owner turnover has been very, very low. I would have expect issues much soon, e.g. "the Jones in unit #3, always do a lousy job cleaning", etc. I also would expect problems going forward even if the "Burning Man" owner leaves, so...

How is the Match taxed on a Roth 401k?

I don't think that is right. My last full year at work, I suspect I would have contributed maybe ~$55,000, or so, to my 401K that year. I looked up my old Megacorp benefits on-line for the calendar year 2023 and found the following limits for 2023. - up to $22,500 max total employee...

    After I'm Gone

Yes, I too have the same concerns and I have simplified my spreadsheet over the years and I suspect my worksheet tabs aren't terribly different from yours. I'm also very aware of the how the once per year review/involvement is too long of a review interval and much is forgotten without some...

    Great River Road Trip

I grew up in Iowa and the Mississippi from say Minneapolis to Dubuque is very scenic and one of my favorite areas to visit when in the area. Myself, I wouldn't be interested in the entire length due to the poverty and lack of scenery I would expect to see along the southern part of the route...

Borrowing Against Investment Portfolio For Home Purchase

One option might be to rent back your house prior to moving. We sold our last house and rented it back from the buyer for ~7 weeks prior to us leaving town. It was all laid out in the closing process. It worked beautifully for us, but it is an unlikely option.

Calling all spreadsheet geeks. Spend down plan.

As pb4ski notes, based on your assets and spend rate you seems to have plenty of money to retire, so I'm somewhat curious about the point of the spreadsheet. Is it to insure you won't run out of money and/or to convince the DW that you won't; or decide when to retire, etc.? I have a large...

Calling all spreadsheet geeks. Spend down plan.

I understand much of spreadsheet, but I'm confused on a few areas. Is the plan to live off post tax money for the next 10 years will little tax due? If so, why does Tax column show 15%, isn't it lower? Can Lisa take out some 401K money during those 10 years to utilize the <15% tax brackets?

I have COVID and need help. I am in panic mode

Based on your "panic mode" title, I would probably go to my PCP, then I would probably push myself to get going again and not rest anymore. I like the rest advice in general, but it has been awhile now. Of course, your PCP should have some advice too.

The first million takes the longest to achieve

15, 5, 2, 5....next milestone will be > 6 if we ever get there (numbers are actually net worth, not portfolio tho). Looking back, I'm amazed at the number of different investment funds, etc. that we had in the early 2000s.

Views on Negotiating for New Vehicle

It seems odd that you can order a vehicle and yet no one is committed on the price and whose truck it is. I would just let the other person have this truck and order 10 trucks next time. With that many trucks surely you should end up with one of them.

    Help me see the Sequoias

I really like this route outlined by Cathy, but since you're driving in from the east, I would go no further south than the Methuselah tree in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest. I really enjoy the area around Mammoth Lakes, Mono Lake, and up to Tioga pass, due to the high gradient of the...

Examples of current inflation - add yours!

Lots of inflation over the past few years, but surprising a few items we purchase seem to be immune from price increases. DW likes a wine that we order by the case and have it shipped to us through out the year (well mostly spring/fall). I recently ordered one and compared it to the price on a...

    Experience with State Farm?

We have been with SF for many years, but our last claim was over 30 years ago, so no recent data for you. My only complaint with my SF homeowner's policy is that amount of "personal property" is set at 75% of the house value and can't be changed. While I understand that some houses might have...

    Washington State road trip

Based on your areas of interest, I might do Hurricane Ridge in Olympic NP, then take the ferry to Victoria from Port Angeles, WA. $500,000 per couple primary residence exclusion and inflation

Your comment on "major home improvements" made me look up Publication 523. My reading of the Pub is that any "improvement" qualifies for an increase in the basis. At least I sure hope so as I already will need most of my $262,000 improvements to avoid exceeding the $500,000 allowance when I...

    Plant based fake meats

This thread reminded me of a Peter Attia podcast with Don Layman. In it Layman discusses the importance of ruminant animals in the production of essential amino acids (AA) for us humans and the lack of these essential AA in much of the vegan diet. Later on, I realized he did not address the...

Tax Mistake - Discovered AFTER Submitting

Can't you just wait for the first one to be processed? I submitted my "Fillable Forms" on 1/30 and had my refund in my checking account by 2/6. Or, can you maybe just start another Fillable Form filling for a "John Doe", without submitting it (i.e. just complete it enough to get your final...
