    Poll: Taking SS - when?

I will be turning 62 in August and will be taking SS at that time for the same reason as Brdofpray. Pension offset negates any survivor benefits for DW so the best option for us is to take in now.

    Friends are all broke!

I don't ask any of our friends about their financial strategy. I can certainly guess by how some of them live but unless they volunteer information, I never bring it up. I never divulge our FIRE status and where we stand with anyone other than my DW or kids. Normally, I wouldn't discuss it...

Collecting Social Security benefits at age 62

The reason that I am taking social security at the age of 62, It is due to the government pension offset. Because my wife has a government's pension, any survivor benefit she might get would be eliminated to the GPO.

    Class of 2017

This is my FIRST not weekend day, not having to check my work email when it seems to ding me every 10 minutes is very gratifying. They did try to get me to stay on part time and I told them if they had any issue they couldn't resolve that they could purchase time from me at 150 an hour in...

    Class of 2017

I was originally scheduled to retire August 31st, I ended up staying one more month to clean up some lose ends and make sure the next person had less to do in order to slide into my position. So my last day is today and the day is OVER! Now lets wait for a couple weeks for it all to settle in.

Not putting my money in PenFed

Thanks for this, I had forgotten about the 5k xfer limit. I ran into that and didn't know about the direct transfer option. I will have to look at that. I will say that when I ran into it, I was shocked that they had such a low limit. In todays dollars, 5k is nothing. Add to this that they...

Single Income or SWR With Significant Other?

My DW and I have been married for 40 Years this year. We have always had joint checking savings and she has always balanced the check book and I have always taken care of making the investing decisions. We are and always have been free to spend whatever we each want to. Works for us as we...

Is today the day for 20K ?

I predict "YES".. But while it normally doesn't make any difference, I do think in this case it will get more people jumping in the market if it "holds" for a week or so.

    Being retired is hard....

I simple see being FIRED as being able to do whatever you want to do or whatever pleases you. If working part time pleases you there is NOTHING wrong with that or anything else you want to do. After all, isn't one of the reasons you retired, to do what you want to do when you want to do it?
