Why are older Americans drinking so much

I honestly cannot stand the taste of alcoholic drinks. To me, it’s revolting. Sure I’ve had beer and wine now and again, but only at gatherings and so on- and that’s few and far between. I never drink at home and you won’t find any in the house! I very much prefer 4C iced tea mix!

The age when you actually retire, vs. the age when you begin taking social security

Sounds like my MIL's family. 8 brothers and sisters all passed around 60s to 70's. My MIL will be 92 next month, I suspect you may have the same trajectory. I hope so

Calling all spreadsheet geeks. Spend down plan.

So you're spending in red, this will/not include ACA? Do you have an idea what your cost will be for a plan for two? I'm struggling with this now...

    Buying a New Car

I bought a new Subaru a few months back. It’s a premium trim Crosstrek and has lots of bells and whistles I’d never intentionally order, but I got them. The things I like most now are the adaptive cruise, start/stop and lane keeper electric steering. It will keep the car between the lines...

Assisted Living facility trying to force my Mom onto pricey 'medication management'

For my mother (has profound dementia) they give her the meds crushed into pudding. When my dad was alive, and they were in the assisted living facility, i paid then as well, because moms memory was so bad, she often couldn't remember from day to day she even had to take meds. Maybe that's not...

I have COVID and need help. I am in panic mode

I only have the original two part Pfizer shots and the booster after that. On or about the fourth day is when I phase out of the sickest stuff. Cough, aches and fever etc. then I just feel “sick” but it’s so much better than the previous days. Probably a good 10 days till I’m back to 100%.

I have COVID and need help. I am in panic mode

I’ve had Covid twice now- each time it kicked my ass. I have three shots in me, it’s hell for about 4 days; cough, congestion, wicked fever and aches. Then like a switch being thrown, I start to feel significantly better each day. I’d definitely take rest, it will run its course and you’ll start...

Article: 'I'm too young to retire': What forced these workers to retire

I see it too at megacorp. I’m 58, middle management doing ok money wise. DW and I can FIRE now if we want, but I do not want to yet. It’s kind of a game now with me- see how long I can last before showing me the door. The only thing is they keep giving me big raises and bonus, makes it hard to...

Getting an elderly parent to give up living alone

Good idea but probably not feasible. You’d have to move ALL of your furniture and bed etc in for just one week or so stay. That’s a tremendous amount of work. Most places do not provide these things.

Would it be better to take Social Security at 62?

Yep, it is for retirement! I know there's a heavy psychological component at work here. But I think its still a sound strat to take quasi early.

Would it be better to take Social Security at 62?

I’m in good health generally speaking. I’m still w*rking DW retiring in May. My SS is definitely much higher than hers; she may take hers right away and I delay to 65 is what I’ve been thinking. It’s a good compromise to waiting to 70. We shall see how much my BS bucket can hold. Fortunately we...

Would it be better to take Social Security at 62?

DW and I are really struggling on if we should wait until FRA, 70 or take it now. If we take it at 62 (she's 3.5 years older than me, i'm 58) its $48k per year for us. This isnt bad and we'd need to mine just a bit to be comfy. However, if we wait until 70 (12 years for me..) we'll get around...

Morningstar declares 4% safe once again

Your approach makes the most sense to me. I’m cautious by nature and need only what we need to be comfortable. That’s it.
