Why you might want to disinherit your kids

Disowning children can have long term and unforeseen consequences. It can also cause costly legal problems if the will is contested by those who are disinherited. For anyone who wants to disinherit a child, I suggest you at least explain this to them before you die so that it won't come as a...

Do you think this is affordable?-Dave Ramsey response

I took a Dave Ramsey course and do not agree with some of the things he promotes.

    Bogle advice on index funds

I thought the 12 month rule was a federal law, if so, I'm stuck for the next 10 months, (maybe closer to 9 months by now). What made me upset also is that he selected Black Rock for me, without presenting me with any other options. Although Black Rock itself is not a bad college savings plan...

    Bogle advice on index funds

Blackrock (sold by Edward Jones), I believe is based in Ohio. I live in Texas. There are no tax benefits to enroll in my state's 529 plan from what I understand.

    Bogle advice on index funds

Yes. This 529 plan was originally with Fidelity. The Edward Jones adviser said it would do better with them, they use Blackrock. So I moved it to Edward Jones from Fidelity. That was a couple of months ago. I want to move it out of Jones, now but am restricted due to the 12 month rule.

    Bogle advice on index funds

Thanks. I regret now having left Vanguard but I see my IRA not doing as well . I think legally I'm allowed to move my IRA right back anytime I want, no tax penalties. It's different with 529 plans. You can only move a 529 plan once per year. Since I moved the 529 plan to EJ this year, it has...

    Bogle advice on index funds

Actually, I do worry about putting everything with Vanguard, also. Seems I should spread things around among other companies, Fidelity, Schwab, etc.

    Bogle advice on index funds

I did much better at Vanguard, but I didn't realize that. After I put my IRAs with Jones, I realized they are doing mediocre. But my Jones adviser said he could help me make a lot of money. I've had all my investments with Edward Jones now about two months. He told me not to switch without...

    Bogle advice on index funds

Thanks. That clears it up for me. A year ago, I didn't even know the difference between stocks and bonds. I didn't even know what they were! So I am learning all the time.

    Bogle advice on index funds

I want 80/20 or 75/25. More equities than bonds. I had some index fund in Vanguard a while back doing really well. When I moved everything over to Edward Jones, the adviser pulled it out and replaced it with some mutual funds.

    Bogle advice on index funds

That's what I thought, too. But the Bogle book said if the 500 index tanks then the economy would be so bad at that point, that I'd have worse things to worry about that my IRA. ?? Although index funds are popular now, what if it's not sustainable for the future.

    Bogle advice on index funds

I am reading the Boglehead book, and it says in a nutshell, you can do all your investing in just index funds and do just fine. I'm planning to move my IRA back to Vanguard. Just put it all in index funds? Seems kind of risky to me. I've also read that you should diversify and it's not wise to...

    Prepaid Funerals

Someone I know who was indigent, was cremated and her family didn't have money for a funeral, burial or anything else. They agreed to mail her ashes to the family for a small fee, around $50 or so, I believe. The price changes suddenly when the person has no money.

    Prepaid Funerals

I have done some research on prepaid funerals and read that you can lose any funds that you don't use towards the funeral; and that they aren't such a great deal overall. I recently had a negative experience with someone trying to sell me a pre-paid funeral plan and he told me it would cost...

Why put money in savings account?

To me, even a stable income fund would be better than a bank savings account. A bank savings account earns interest of maybe a few dollars a year? At most. I don't have one. I have a money market account with a small amount as emergency funds, in case of job loss.

Do Not Call List / Telemarketers

Because of the Do Not Call list, there is an increasing number of businesses that now use door knocking to promote their business and sell. This is more annoying that cold calls. I understand they have a job to do, but don't want strangers at my door. I sometimes get five to six people per day...

Why put money in savings account?

I might put some investment into cash if I were, say, afraid of a pending stock market crash. This person uses a savings account for college instead of a 529 plan, because I believe they might be totally risk averse. I did lose some money in a 529 plan I had with Fidelity, although not very...

Why put money in savings account?

Does it make any sense to save for college by putting the money in a savings account? I know someone who does this and has about 40K in the account so far and her child will be needing the money for college in about ten years. The only advantage I can see to a savings account, is that the money...

    Transferred IRA with Regrets

I have two 529 plans with over 4K in each one now. I just wanted to deposit $350 in each one (total of $700). The FA said that it would cost $45 transaction fee for each one, which would be $90. My state Texas offers no state tax deduction to enroll in a 529 plan here, so I'm opening myself up...

    Transferred IRA with Regrets

So your transaction fee was very miniscule compared to what Edward Jones is trying to rip me off for. I can't even refer to it as anything else but a rip off. That's why I'm kicking EJ to the curb. Like I said earlier, I don't see how EJ's business model can survive in the next decade. They...

    Transferred IRA with Regrets

I had already set up these 529 plans in EJ, with Blackrock. It's probably too late to do much with them - I just need to move them out of EJ and would like to put them into Vanguard's 529 plan. I paid a load fee in the 529 plans already, a front load, they put me in the class A stuff. Yes...

    Transferred IRA with Regrets

Watched that, it's hysterically funny. EJ and their IT department can hide some of their reviews, but not all. I've seen quite a few of them!
