    To sell house or not?

Good point. Her mother is elderly and lives up the hill from the second house. She wants to move up there!

    To sell house or not?

All in at once, right decision 80% of the time. Your point is well taken. That pesky 20% gives me pause so I usually chicken out and invest 50% right off then DCA. So far its been a mistake ie should have gone all in. To your point, waiting for the dip is a loser. Thanks for the advice.

    To sell house or not?

Thanks for that. As they say, control the limbic system (emotions) or you are going to be poor. The responses are consistent!

    To sell house or not?

I have not made much progress on this issue for a few years niw. Here are the details and I would welcome any input. Kids are now all moved out and house in 4500 sq ft. Wife and I own a second home that is far cheaper to live in at 1800 sq ft. Current mortgage is $420k at 2.375% 30 year. Second...

    Where to park $1 mil

I like it. Same overall risk exposure without the taxes until the shares are redeemed years from now. That way I could adjust my exposure to individual stocks in the 401k when I am resetting the AA. Thanks. J

    Where to park $1 mil

Thanks for that. I am self employed so I have no pension income. The non rental house generates about $800/mo income from VRBO etc. so that helps. My wife has not worked quite enough to qualify for SS so she will get half of mine. My CPA says if I live in the rental for two years calling it our...

    Where to park $1 mil

Thanks so much for the input. I have $3.8 mil in the 401 k with 75/25. In that 75% I have 80% individual stock exposure which has done well for 20 years but I feel I need to ease out of that and into a total market index like the 20% of that 75%.We would be debt free and own two houses that are...

    Where to park $1 mil

House is for sale and proceeds will total about $1 mil (or we wont sell). Plan is to move into our rental as "primary residence". I have had no money outside the 401k in my lifetime. Thinking about a CD ladder for a couple of years with an AA of 75/25 total market index/bond fund as the eventual...

    The meaning of Rich

The Buddhists have it right.....if you cling and crave, you will suffer. Cravings and desires are insatiable so it won't matter how much money you have, you still wont be happy. So my definition of rich is: 1) You have treated people kindly and fairly and have been of good service to others. You...

Anyone Else Desire The Two-Home Lifestyle?

We have owned three houses for 18.5 years and two for a decade. I am not a fan of three for sure. One we VRBO and it breaks even, the other we rent out full time but all three need to be maintained and it is a huge pain in the butt. We will keep two for a while in retirement as they are five...

    Awake During Colonoscopy--Again?

It is a sedation case so you may well have some recall. Relatively small price to pay for a potentially life saving procedure. But hey, I would worry about you if you liked it!

A real quandary....how to spend it all

I would say keep up the cheap tight wad style that you have been successful with except that you should help your kids out ie. buy them a new set of tires, give them some money. The kids need the money. You have been presumably happy with your approach to money so stick with it. PEACE OF MIND is...

    Should I wrap it up?

Thanks all. The health insurance premium is low as it is a carryover from my wifes employment with the school district years ago. You are correct about the timing of the second house as well as the run up in California. My wife and I have decided to sell the big expensive asset which is the...

    Should I wrap it up?

Thanks you all so much for the replies. We plan to sell the primary and either sell the rental or move into it to be around for my junior in college half an hour away. Turns out it would take about ten years of living in that house to eliminate all the taxes from having rented it out for 18...

    Should I wrap it up?

My long term employment situation has changed and my current contract will expire in May. I would like input on how many of you would vote to call it quits based on the following data: I turn 60 in May. Wife is same age. I own three houses and one of the houses is where we planned to retire. If...

    Market correction anxiety

Typically the market corrects like this: 1) A bottom is established 2) There follows a failed rally ie suckers rally 3) The market retests in the region of the initial bottom 4) Recovery Why does this happen? Who knows. Random chaos. In the absence of recessionary indicators, that's just the way...

    It's funny joke Thursday! 2005 - 2020

Friends Dog A guy goes over to his friends house and his buddies St. Bernard is licking its testicles. The guy says to his friend, "Jeez I wish I could do that!". His friend pondered the comment and replied, "Maybe you should pet him first."

How do you factor in SS?

Sort of relates to the question of what success % you use in your retirement calcs. I use 100% and zero SS. If it works in that scenario then I am probably good. If you have to totally rely on SS to make it all work I would plan a 1/3 reduction but also agree that a very large cut is unlikely.

Another Market Down Day .. Are you buying or selling ?

With respect to tech I am an active buyer of Paypal, Facebook, Mastercard. I have enough Apple. So I look forward to bad news, pictures of traders in distress etc. Total market index....not enough of a correction. Rebalanced AA in September by giving individual shares a haircut and allocating...

    What's Good About Being Retired?

I am a wanna be retiree, age 59. Most of us have worked hard for many years and work/productivity/income have become so ingrained that the thought of "giving that up" is surprisingly difficult. But when I look at the things I want to do...longer trips that require more physical training etc. and...

    Part Time Work

Here is a question for all you smart people out there. Seems that most folks have jobs that require them to be either all in or all out ie. there is not a viable part-time option. How would a part-time option affect your retirement plans? Example:Take 20 weeks off/year in lieu of full retirement.
