Soup Lines Ahead? Bill Gross Speaks

Must you use personal attacks in conjunction with your political posts?  I don't recall people referring to you as a "left wing nut."  Just a suggestion.

Not quite me, but thank you for the name calling. Glad that SOB is where he belongs.

Shook Hands with John Edwards This noon...............

Does he believe in cutting marginal tax rates a la Kennedy?  An inconvenient truth for libs is the last round of marginal cuts by Bush resulted in a net gain in government revenues.

Where the next Crash will come..............

IMHO, the next big energy solution which will be embraced by the greens and the conservatives is nuclear power. It's clean and very cost efficient. How to make money on it is dicey since the lead times are VERY long.

When will REITs come back to earth?

Sold the last of my small REIT holdings into the strength yesterday. Can't see any value in a 6% REIT yield when Money Market offers a safe 5% return. They were good to me in the 1999-2005 time period.

    Spending more than you thought??

Spending more as above plan financial returns have tempted us to ...1) Eat out more...2) Travel a bit more...3) Also had a few thousand in unexpected health care costs. Need to reread "Your Money or Your Life"....where are those dryer sheets?

Is it time to revert to cash?

Global bankers all have their sights dead set on the speculative excesses in the following markets: 1) Base metals...2) Oil/Oilservices...3) Housing/related construction. Hedge funds margined to those sectors are getting their collective heads handed to them uncerimoniously. Probably some more...

    Your health insurance premiums?

DW and I pay 525/mo in SC for BC/BS individual, high deductible major medical policies. No drug coverage, or coverage for routine office visits/tests. If you're not height/weight proportionate, you have zero chance of getting covered by these people. I dropped 25 lbs on a high protein/low carb...

If You Are Fat, Whose Fault Is It?

Several posters have got it right. I went from 205 to 175 effortlessly by eliminating sugars (except for holidays/special occaisons), cutting out white flour (pasta/pizza/bread), and starchy foods. Voila. I feel better and have much more energy. No frequent heartburn either, unless I go off the...

    5 Long-term Stocks?

Here's 5 I've been buying recently: MMM- I like it in the low 70's...got clobbered on a pretty decent earnings report. PHM- Diversified homebuilder well off it's 52 wk high...taking share from smaller builders and has a ridiculous forward PE of under 6. DOW - 9 PE, 3.3 % yield....margin...

The Broken Promise - Time Oct 2005

I don't invest in companies that aren't shareholder friendly....i.e. that self deal themselves fat options packages and/or golden parachutes for poor performing executives. It takes some analysis of the fine print in 10k's, but it's worth it.

    Financial Magazines

Forbes is the only decent one IMHO....BizWeek is a lefty joke, Fortune isn't much better. Money is a good contrary indicator....Kiplinger isn't the best of the rest.

    The pension system destruction continues

"The trade-off for totally "wild" capitalism v. totally "safe" socialism is economic growth potential. How much growth are we willing to give up for safety/equity, or vice versa?" You've almost nailed it..... The social welfare states in old Europe have plenty of problems.....France has a 10%...

7 Million Retirees Return to Work

I ER'd my burned out body in 2001 at 43.....and then had a lapse in judgement and decided to take a full time job in my field that came available locally in 2004. Bad mistake. Trust me, after tasting the good life and having your freedom, it's doubly difficult to go back to the full time grind...

Ah, that Paul Farrell.....he's been bearish for the last 2-3 years per my occaisonal perusing of that joke of a website "marketwatch."   Methinks a political agenda is the primary motivation behind that particular site.

    Living on a lot less

We started off doing OK....but backsliding has crept in. 8-9% portfolio returns over the last 4 years has helped mask our profligate ways. I guess we've started subscribing to the theory of spending more if returns are good....I'm sure we'll get our comeuppance one of these years. We...

The Real Reasons You're Working So Hard

Technology has rendered most upper middle managers obsolete....the problem is they haven't gone away. So the allegedly "empowered" people who do the work spend an inordinate amount of their time trying to get the egos up to speed on the business, & convince them that the right course of action...

    allocation

I like precious metal stocks, particularly copper. True, it's at a record high but it's been stubbornly hanging out at those levels for quite a while. While a short term correction is entirely possible, maybe even likely, I love the long term fundamentals. Sometimes it "really is different this...

    50 worst songs ever

"Maneater" Hall & Oates. The quintessential annoying 80's duo. "Afternoon Delight" - Starland Vocal Band. Beyond cheesy. Think I saw an old video of them performing....which made it worse, visualizing those two getting it on. "99 Luftballoons" - Artist? Some euro chick/band.
