    Debt reduction vs. 401k contribution

I can't pay enough each month towards the cc debt to be done in two years. Money is tight right now. I realize I will be taxed at about 28% on any amount I do not contribute to the 401k. I guess I am also looking for a mental edge to getting this accomplished. Maybe I should do option 1?

    Debt reduction vs. 401k contribution

So I srewed up and now we have two credit cards with high interest rates totaling $13000. I contribute the IRS max of $13000 (coincidence?)approx. 10% of my pay to my 401k with a company match of 5%, $6500 ,per year. I am 80% in S&P 500 index and 20% in Wilshire 4500 index. My balance is...

    80% Rule?

Thanks for all your tips.  It is obvious that the members of this board are diverse, and thats a good thing. I think I will start by tracking expenses for everything. I like the idea of approaching it from a what you spend vs. % of income.

OK So it won't be 80%. I buy that, I would like to know what figure to use for all my calculations. I figure erroring on the high side is a good thing.

    80% Rule?

Whats wrong with the 80% of pre-retirement income needed in ER? I have no clue how much I will need to live on in 17 years when I retire. Can anybody point me in the right direction of how to figure it out. What percentages of pre-retirement income do you find yourself at? Mark

    Welcome Young Dreamers!

Chris, Thanks for the reply. Just so I get started off right here, I have been using my expected rate of return (example 10%) for predicting my 401k balance in the future. I know that that figure has to be adjusted of inflation. Are most people using a "real rate of return" figure (example 6%)...

    Welcome Young Dreamers!

I will probably not retire until I'm 56, thats 17 years away. My choices of investment in our 401k are limited to 5 indexed funds: govt securities, s&p500, whilshire 4500, bond fund, and a Europe and east Asia stock fund. I was planning on staying all stock until I get a little closer to...

    Welcome Young Dreamers!

My 10% rate is not adjusted for inflation. I am using the 10% as a goal for earnings in my 401k. I understand that the balances I mentioned having at retirement are in todays dollars and are not adjusted for inflation. When I look at stock funds and such, should I not be thinking 8 or 10% and...

When calculating WR of retirement funds, are most people assuming this is their only income stream, or do most of you have other sources of retirement cash and the WR calculations are just to ensure the fund does not run out? Mark

I assume 50% of what they tell me.   I downloaded the SS program and found it difficult to work with.  There are three calculators on the SS website as others have mentioned.  The one in the middle seems to be the most helpfull. multi posts not my fault

    The $1,000,000 question

Markets for aging baby boomers. In 10 years there is going to be a pantload of over 55 people looking to be taken care of in every sense of the word. Do you think all of these male enhancement drugs coming out in such a short span of time is a coincidence?
