    The Blues (music)

I've been playing in blues bands and blues jams for the last decade or so, I do a yearly trip to play with a group of buddies every year. Speaking of buddies, Buddy Guy is awesome in concert if you ever get a chance to see him play. For new players, check out Christone Ingram, that kid is a...

Yeah I saw this a few days ago. Good video, but she basically lifted the theory of how it's calculated from the guy at tipswatch.com, they may have have done additional backtesting but the basic formula is not something she came up with.

If you're going to buy this year, you might as well buy in April and lock the higher 5.27 rate for 6 months. Based on this article it's unlikely the fixed rate will be higher than 1.3% but we will only know for sure when it's too late to wish you bought in April. I "upgraded" all my 0% fixed...

    Your recent repair? - 2021 to ?

I just discovered dry rot at the exterior door jamb of my front door today. Looks like I need to replace maybe a door or each side..it might be easier to replace the entire length, I haven't had much time to look at it and ponder, but it looks like you need to buy wood pre-milled into a specific...

Reviewing Plan on a Lazy Sunday

Sorry I meant you insisted on sticking to whatever % you told Firecalc to use. The point being that very few people are likely to stick with a number when they see they portfolio shrinking year after year. The other point was that, when you have other income like SS, how terrible is it if you...

    Your recent repair? - 2021 to ?

I had a similar experience with my wife's brand new laptop. She set it on the floor one time and managed to drop something heavy on it, breaking the screen. I ordered a new LCD panel from China (took about a week to get here) and managed to break the connector the ribbon cable seats into, and no...

    Monthly Grocery Expenditure

Same, rarely eat out and we cook for ourselves, don't know if it's "like kings". My budget app says we averaged $1300/mo last year and $1000 so far this year. We do have a grown up child living with us and he as been doing more of his own cooking lately because he has a different schedule. The...

Reviewing Plan on a Lazy Sunday

I don't. My situation is similar-ish to yours, but I'd rather take extra trips or upgrade the RV early in retirement rather than die with too much. That's what I'm working to figure out. I'm worried about getting SORR too much. Remember "failure" in Firecalc simply means you insisted on taking...

I have never worked on cars before except for changing my oil once 30 years ago (I didn't know what to do with the used oil), or changing the odd lightbulbs. When I had my tires replaced late last year they told me my front struts needed replaced. I looked it up on YouTube and decided I could do...

Cruise to Hawaii, how to skip excursions?

We're taking a cruise to Hawaii in December. Honolulu, Nawiliwili (Kauai), Lahaina (Maui), Hilo. We'd like to keep the budget in check and it seems that we should be able to explore and do things on our own rather than do cruise excursions. We're aware of the fact that th ship will only wait...

    Cruise Travel agency?

The cruise travel agency we used is closing/retiring, so I'm shopping for a someone new. The people we were using only did cruises. They had careers in the cruising industry before creating their agency, and had a lot of inside knowledge, both from having been a part of the industry and...

Share Your FIRE Milestones - 2021

Do a search on Average and Median net worth by age and you'll see 50% of 55 year old have less than $300K in Net Worth (and I bet a lot of that is tied in their house) Many likely don't hang around this forum, but it's a good reminder that many people here are fortunate to be in the situation...

Silver lining I guess. You definitely earned the right to combine. Have $1M tax-free is a major achievement. I don't think I'll ever get there even with Roth conversions after I retire.

    Poll: Dune Part 2

I relatively recently (we within the last 6-7:years) reread the original series, and I'm working my way through the spinoffs, so it was a given i'd see them all and in the theatre. I enjoyed part 1 and part 2 very much and I'm somewhat surprised my wife and son enjoyed it, I never know how...

https://tipswatch.com/2024/02/26/lets-check-in-on-the-i-bonds-next-fixed-rate/ has a guess that the fixed rate will hold around 1.3%. nobody knows for sure, but his guesses and methodology have been pretty good guesses on the past.

I don't see where it says the fixed % of iBonds could go over 1.3% You're right, you don't need to make a de sion till April, at that time the variable percentage will basically be known, but we will all be guessing on the fixed % until it's too late to decide you preferred 1.3%. The fixed rate...

    Your 2023 effective tax rate

That's why AGI doesn't seem to be a good measure, some of the deductions, etc... are already discounted. If a couple makes the standard deduction plus one dollar, is their taxe rate 10% (10 cents on that dollar) or is it 10 cents divided by $27001?

Can my state taxes really be 6x my federal?

I had never given any thoughts to how State taxed LTCG, and I guess I had always assumed it was the same as Federal. Unfortunately I now learned that LTCGs are taxed as ordinary income.

    Your 2023 effective tax rate

I use H&R block and I don't think it tells me. What do you do with this number? (What does it tell you). I'm still employed and put money on a 401(k), HSA, pre-tax insurance premiums... so my AGI is significant lower than my gross. Why is AGI more relevant? Does it help in any way understand my...

What is your Spreadsheet INFLATION assumption?

LOL I don't model any of these as separate items, I use 3%, and I make sure that some of my investments are inflation-protected (TIPs, I-Bonds, and enough equities)

What is your Spreadsheet INFLATION assumption?

That is correct. $4 real dollars buys a gallon of milk today and in 20 years. $4 nominal dollars buys a gallon of milk today, but it may require $20 nominal dollars in 20 years

Depending on want you use iBonds for, it's apple and oranges. iBonds are guaranteed to return XX after the first year (and YY after the 5th year) but can be liquidated at any time after the first year and you get exactly what it says on the can. TIPS are guaranteed to return ZZ 5/10/25 years...
