Poll:To those who retired or retiring very soon - what is your comfy withdrawal rate?

Not there yet, but our plan is to withdraw slightly over 4% before SS kicks in then slightly less after. We will have a paid off rental that will cover bare bones existence in case things get crazy - I think like everyone else we'll adjust lifestyle as needed.

    Assessing the Carnage

The great recession occurred in when I was 33, I was cavalier on the market crash and just thrilled to be buying in at bargain rates, DCA-ing in with our 401ks etc. It's a lot more painful when losing much larger amounts much closer to retirement. I'm just here for emotional support, lol. I'm...

    Retirement with little saved

I've went part time (24 hours a week) almost seven years ago, I have a goal of retiring in 7 years when I'm 54 1/2 but more and more I'm thinking of staying on longer and just letting DW retire as it's not a crushing workload. Probably only a year or two more as I have aspirations for open ended...

Home prices getting interesting, what price are homes in your neighborhood?

Still insane in my neck of the woods. This is our starter home neighborhood, we moved to an area of the same city with better schools and amenities. These are KB homes with relatively low end build quality: https://www.sdlookup.com/MLS-NDP2201451-730_Via_Barquero_San_Marcos_CA_92069 They are...

    Gifting to Children

That's a really good point. As the son who "did well" while my brother STILL lives with my parents and has made it clear he expects to inherit everything and continue living there when they die, I've been made a bit sore on this subject. I haven't spent much time talking to my kids about this...

Home prices getting interesting, what price are homes in your neighborhood?

My rental property (1400 sq foot condo) just crossed $700k with a couple recent sales in my development. About five miles from the coast as the crow flies here in north San Diego, but 15 min drive from the beach because, you know, SoCal. I think the young in SoCal have given up on a single...

How do you book vacation rentals?

I use VRBO to "find" the place, but a little googling afterwards helps me contact the owner directly and it's always cheaper that way. Staying in Cabo in June and saved over a thousand using that method.

The fact that Wells Fargo, who sells crypto funds publishes a paper saying you should buy crypto funds is surprising how....? I heard this kind of language from a lady who tried to get me to invest in her copper wristband MLM....there are websites for cyrpto fanboys if you really want people to...

The one time $500k shield on taxes on profit would help, no?

Home prices getting interesting, what price are homes in your neighborhood?

Gumby, exactly, there is a short term bump no doubt, but I don't feel like things are crazy. If prices flatten this year (and I think rising interest rates will play their part) this is almost a reversion to the mean, a completed recovery from the crash of 2007. Now if I could just get my...

    The Cryptocurrency Thread 2

I remember when Time Warner bought AOL for a brazillion dollars, just because a big company does it doesn't mean it isn't a mistake. Quarterly numbers and FOMO are real at every level. I agree with others, crypto doesn't solve any existing problems. I don't want my "currency" to bounce up and...

Home prices getting interesting, what price are homes in your neighborhood?

Here in North County San Diego we've been invaded by Bay Area transplants. I bought my house in one of the cheaper cities (San Marcos) in the cheaper zip code for $492,000 in 2009. My exact model just sold in a bidding war for $1,250,000 all cash offer. Non descript 2500 sq foot home. But at...

I know it’s all relative but I look back on that guy and shake my head. Don’t miss some pics of the “babies” I put on latest pics. Remember heart surgery on my three year old? That’s her about to finish high school!

16 years ago I came here, the father of a baby with special needs feeling like I needed to become a grown up real quick. Tori has Down Syndrome but it hasn't held her back. This year she's a senior in high school, on varsity cheer and was voted homecoming queen!

Share Your FIRE Milestones - 2021

Been a long time since I was active here, joined in 2005 as a young pup with a dream, now 47 years old and recently calculated we have a 2.5 million NW now, made me think of the board! Our single biggest good move was buying a ~1500 sq foot townhouse as a rental back in 2013 down the street...

Currently 50 and thinking of retiring at 60...thoughts?

You can up that 401k contribution at 50, by the way. EDIT: I think that's what you meant, read it at first as company match. You only have to make it a few years to social security so it looks good.

Sell apartment buildings or keep forever?

Could you sell sone and go with a property management company? We only have one rental but it represents 25% of our net worth ( thank you San Diego appreciation). We have a management company which helps a lot. At first I’m 2013 it was break even but with the new refinance it’s ~1,000 cash flow...

Where's bottom .. any humorous popular quotes to share?

As a younger person (well, middle aged now) still in the mix of work years, I have a lot of friends getting laid off already and work freezes up. Fortunately for us I'm part of the defense industrial complex and am "safe" for now, meanwhile my wife's company makes immunoassays and tests -...

    Adult Children vs Retirement Planning

There is a lot of pressure from my peer group (mid 40’s, STEM middle class millionaire set) to plan on paying for all of college (“how could you saddle them with debt?”) and to help with the first house down payment as part of financial planning. My wife is more resistant than I To it. I’ve...

    Market correction anxiety

I was in my early 30s during the start of the Great Recession. It was much easier to be cavalier when I had so much less money in the market! In a way I’d rather have it now than five years from now when I’m planning my exit. At least I’m (DW and I double 401k max plus company match) buying.

Could I retire if I had to?

Larger companies like mine offer it at some cut off - mine is 24 hours a week or more and you get benefits - with vacation accrual pro-rated but otherwise full. Not a universal thing at all but it's out there in mega-corp. There is a concept floating out there called the "Silver Tsunami" with a...
