Set me straight on annuities and why are they so bad

Never seen this tool, interesting. I just played with it and got results indicating a 6.37% fixed annual payout inclusive of interest and return-of-capital (with the 20-year guaranteed model). Of course, I wouldn't put anything more than $250K into any single annuity provider (that is the...

Set me straight on annuities and why are they so bad

Welcome to the message board @tim0476, I have appreciated your calm responses and enjoyed reading the thread as I am pretty ignorant on annuities. I have rarely found any strong recommendations for annuities in any of the financial news I read, so always curious about those that end up using...

Muni Bond (and Muni Bond Fund) Discussion

Thanks @nelsonowe appreciate the second set of eyes. This one is gone now but great to learn for next time. I pretty much am only buying non-ER and longer dated at this point. Seems like airports have been showing up a lot the last few weeks in secondary market, but I have been happy to grab...

Muni Bond (and Muni Bond Fund) Discussion

How much do you guys trust when Fidelity does NOT mark a bond as having Extraordinary Redemption (ER)? I was looking at X82672168 today (which is NOT indicated as having ER or a Sinking Fund) but see the prospectus does say (on page 227 or D-1) that they are "subject to mandatory sinking fund...

Callable Bonds & CDs being called

I have definitely had a number of calls come in, some through ER (extraordinary redemption) even earlier than the call date. I am now willing to forgo a quarter point or so of interest on a comparable bond if I can avoid ER provisions.

Corporate and Agency GSE Bond DEALS and NEW ISSUES

Yeah my 7% FHLB (3130AXGD4) was called last week and just got a call notice on my CAPONE 6.6% (SOFR + 1.35%) 14040HCR4.

Which one of these Fidelity funds is better in a state with income taxes?

You really want this one (pure treasuries, no repurchase agreements...so fully deductible in most states): https://fundresearch.fidelity.com/mutual-funds/summary/31617H300 Depending on your fed and state tax rates and their rules on deductibility, this one (muni federal tax exempt) may also...

BALANCED FUND vs INTEREST INCOME FUND? Where to park $100k for the next 2 years?

at these rates and a 2-year timeframe, no way am I putting it in equities, as they are tagging in new multi-year highs every single day. Guaranteed 4-5% in interest or a gamble on a much wider range of unknowable outcomes. All comes down to your risk appetite and tolerance for loss. My...

    Last minute cruise deals?

I have never found a cruise line direct rate that I couldn't easily beat at multiple other places, once you factor in on board credit and extra perks. I love using CruiseCompete and used it religiously for years but then realized every best offer always came from Crown Cruise Vacations, so now...

You are correct, I do like that info page from Schwab much better, very informative and clear. Kind of curious what that "Current Yield" means but still great data points.

Muni Bond (and Muni Bond Fund) Discussion

Thanks @nelsonowe I had no idea that tool existed. Yes, it would be nice to not have to try and figure out which event is included in their YTW. I also realized why my head wasn't comprehending the YTM properly....because I was still imagining lost coupon interest (due to lower rate) on a (for...

Muni Bond (and Muni Bond Fund) Discussion

Do we fully trust Fido's calculation of Yield to Worst (YTW - typically call) and Yield to Maturity (YTM)? I was looking at a secondary 25-yr (effective) insured taxable muni (915455NB1) that has a 3.8% coupon and selling at $73.595....which they show as resulting in 5.8% YTW (I believe that)...

All my eggs in one basket (brokerage)?

Just my take, but I wouldn't be too worried if you are with one of the big boys like Schwab....IMO we are the big risk, not the holding company itself. I am more worried of someone calling in and impersonating me and transferring my funds or hacking their systems....and in these cases, I think...

Muni Bond (and Muni Bond Fund) Discussion

You folks put much weight in bond insurance? Seems all I saw for the longest time was from "ASRD GUARTY MUN CORP" which would typically raise a bond's rating to A1/AA, but now I am seeing more from "BUILD AMERICA MUTUAL", which I assume people are selling because of some of the news that some...

    PSA: income from U.S. obligations

This is available in H&R Block for my state (MD). In the MD return subtractions interview, there is a section called "Enter Income from US Obligations" and they tell you what was reported and already accounted for from the Fed Return and then have you enter the amount of Gain and Income...

    Munis in taxable account

Yeah I am in Fido which doesn't have a clean TE sweep fund, but they do have auto-liquidation options if use Fidelity funds. I am well above 22% once I factor in state/ local taxes and Additional Medicare 0.9% and NII 3.8%. So for me, SPAXX (full taxable) is almost always lower return after...

    Bond Call Notification

great tips from everyone! I actually focus more on call date than maturity date so log that in my spreadsheet with time based formatting too. Fidelity gives alerts if you enable them (not on by default) and I have been getting call notices anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 days in advance. On top of...

    ACA costs

Good ideas but much less appealing with significant trade-offs....namely robbing my Roth from decades of tax-free growth......but perhaps still worth it if it will save 5 figures a year in otherwise unavailable insurance subsidies. I guess the math on this will depend on what happens 2026 and...
