    House == bank ???

    As others have said, there is risk to house equity. I find these decisions come down to lifestyle choices. If you are more of a 'homebody' and get enjoyment from gardening, tinkering in the house, cooking, entertaining etc then the nicer house will bring give you enjoyment and its worth it. On...

    Sicily in late Oct/early Nov

    We are in Sicily right now and love it. You can easily take a 2 hour bus from Catania to Ragusa. Highly recommend staying in Catania for a few days instead of Taormina (overly touristy and easy day visit from Catania). Lots to see and do in Catania...

    Where Have You Have Lived, Why you chose where you live to Retire or Still Mulling

    Great thread. Its amazing how many places so many of you have lived. I have lived in: Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Dallas, Madrid, Ottawa again and Raleigh. I like to live in different places and have a nomadic spirit. Considering central/south america as a home base with significant long term travel.

    Yikes! Unplanned ER at 47 and moving to Canada!

    Hi FlyingNorth, Welcome to Canada. I am Canadian, lived in the US for a few years, as well as Spain, then moved back to Canada. I know more than I ever wanted to know about cross border issues and am very familiar with the Canada/US tax treaty. The treaty allows you to keep your IRAs in the US...

    We plan to: 1. sell the house 2. get rid of stuff and put the rest in storage 3. take off for many months around the world - free and mobile 4. do 3 for as long as it takes to get the 20+ years of Megacorp out of the system and satisfy our gypsy/nomad lust 5. settle somewhere near the kids in a...

    Kiyosaki is at it again!

    The guy is a menace to society - a prognostician that twist the facts. In 2002 he said there will be a crash (of course with no time frame) and then when we have a blip - oh, there it was - even though the market has bounced right back in a matter of weeks! JoJo

    Thinking of a high MER fund

    Hi Accounting Sucks, Sprott is an excellent mutual fund and one of the few whose MER varies based on the performance of the fund so if the fund does well the MER is higher and vice versa. The track record speaks for itself for over 10 years. This is one of the few funds that is worth the price...

    34 yo Canadian semi FIREd...

    Hi D Suggest you look at investing in US based ETFs to get the lower fees. Acuity pooled funds are good and you can meet the minumums. Their pooled high income fund has a great long term track record if you need income. If you structure your income as dividends, you can earn around $30K in...

    Why in the world would you post to (eeeuw) a discussion board?!?

    This is the best forum I have found so far on the Internet. People are intelligent and it covers all kinds of lifestyle topics that really get at the meaning of life. Ready to invest - but where

    Hi AccountingSucks, I am also a fellow Canadian. AltaRed has given you good advice. I did the same thing as both of you. Paid off the mortgage first (guaranteed return) and then invested. This makes sense with our tax system. The best approach I have found is the self-directed route with a...
