    Common Sense and Air Travel

So are the airports are trying to operate way above their design/throughput capacity during peak times or they usually well below capacity during regular periods and don't bother to staff up when the holiday rush kicks in? Just curious Cheers

How great is the US of A

How great is the US of A ?? An international view - from the outside looking in...... Used to be considered great. Observations lately are not so good and getting worse. On the evidence of the past few years, the downhill trend is accelerating and recent events have only increased the pace.

    Curling in the Olympics

.....and why is Baseball / Softball an Olympic sport? Given that most participants are stationary for extensive periods of time and very very few other countries have even the remotest interest in it?

    Common Sense and Air Travel

I presume this was a US internal flight? So why so long at the airport? Mine was an international flight, so I had to pass through an Immigration Control 4 times and still didn't spend more than 2.25 hours in the airport IN TOTAL.

    Common Sense and Air Travel

I never expect much from airline catered food, if it's a longer flight I usually bring my own. This flight was only a little over an hour so it wasn't a problem:  but the coffee, juice and fruit were all pretty good. Suprisingly the "house red" on the flight back was quite palatable too.  ;)...

    Curling in the Olympics

It was an old attempt to encourage more women participants - get a version of sweeping up and mopping on the events list. ;) (Blue touch paper lit.....now going to stand well, well back.............!!!!!)

    Common Sense and Air Travel

I know this is an odd topic, but I thought I would report that today I ate my in-flight "meal" using a real, good, old fashioned stainless steel fork AND KNIFE. Given the food is usually prepared to the texture and consistency of boot sole, it is about time that they stopped adding insult to...

    Smoking marijuana

Smoked a fair amount in my "youth" back home and still enjoy a joint when I go to Europe - flying on KLM via Amsterdam I put a half day between connecting flights in Amsterdam to head downtown. Helps towards the recovery from a 12 hour flight (that's my excuse and I am sticking to it!)  :P In a...

The good old USA and medical costs

Maybe your man Rush is one of the following 20%............ • Twenty percent of Americans think the sun orbits the Earth. Seventeen percent believe the Earth revolves around the sun once a day (The Week, Jan. 7, 2005). Or maybe he just thinks the world revolves around him......

The good old USA and medical costs

A couple of "factoids" to put US health and medical provision to THE WHOLE POPULATION into persepective (facts kindly provided my colleague, who happens to be American and an excellent researcher) - all from various official US statistical sources OR the NYT) • The World Health Organization...

I had to try out this poll thing...Mortgages

CFB - in true "Newbie Pollster" fashion, you are a category or three missing. I polled as "Not retired yet, mortgage" - more accurately I am "Not retired yet, mortgageS",   three to be exact. In US$ equiv's Residence: 290k o/s  value 1mill Rental #1:  256K o/s  value 510k Rental#2:   438K o/s...

The good old USA and medical costs

I neither support nor oppose "socialised" versus "private" medical provision, but there are some points and comments here that require reply. First, Europeans do not go to the US when they are very sick. That is a ludicrous notion. Some very specific treatments, or particular advancements are...

    Overhyped Countries

Getting a work permit to live and work and acquiring rights deriving from the entitlements of hereditary nationality are two very different things. I would still stand by my original assertion. As far as Britain is concerned, a persons British Citizenship derives in two ways: one is "By...

    Overhyped Countries

Howard, do I understand that you are refering to the UK when you say that astromeria would have "Right of Abode"?  If you are, then I am afraid that it is not correct. As a pretty good rule of thumb, unless one has a parent who was BORN in the UK to British parents, AND that parent holds a...

    U.S. expats and state taxes

As has been mentioned on other threads, I beleive the US is the ONLY country that chases down every citizen, resident or not, for taxes on worldwide income. So on that point it's "unlucky you" not "lucky me". And nope, clearly my home Gov is not the US. The reason for my post was to show how...

    U.S. expats and state taxes

For what it's worth / out of interest, this is my experience with regard to my Government involvement in taxes etc when overseas. Warm,Low cost of living,No/Low taxes, inexpensive golf & water sports

Most places have some form of "permanent" residence status- conditions will vary from country to country. From my own experience/knowledge, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and the EU certainly have a process to acquire a "permanent" status prior to completing the...
