Book report: "It's My Ovaries, Stupid!"

Good Lord! I can't believe this is even being discussed ... ! Maybe we should call Oprah and Dr. Phil into the discussion. Perhaps get a group encounter session going? Luckly I am a doctor. Here is my presciption: 1 - Buy a case of beer. Not that designer stuff, but real man beer like Miller...

    So, Why Do We Wait?

N2FIRE - sounds like you are there. I suggest working through a backup plan before you make the move. I have two. You may not need them, but they can help you sleep better at night. Bear

    The pension system destruction continues

Yep, but just part of the exit strategy. During vesting you can also plan to hop within the company. The important difference, in my mind, is that when I started working I never thought about the next job move. When my kids start working it will be one of their first lessons.

    The pension system destruction continues

Another aspect of dropping DBP's I did not see discussed is the relationship between employee and employer. With a DBP there was a paternalistic incentive to remain loyal to a single company. With DCP's it is just the opposite. Employees are now better off job-hopping than staying in one place...

20 years working is all you need

Thread summary (so far) for Young Dreamers. If you are reading this then you are probably interested whether a short career is possible, the subject of this thread. Rather than having to wade through the whole thing I have tried to summarize the discussion to date. Let me know what I have...

    Trade Offs & "Being Responsible'

I think I had one about every 5 years for the past 15. At least that's what my wife says.

Police and fire fighters also have 20 year careers. The fire fighters I know tend to be workaholics though. They just move on to a different career. Martha - I consider myself to be lazy rather than selfish. A highly underappreciated quality in my view.

    We're becoming more illiterate...

I agree. I also see young people having poor problem solving skills. We are now thinking about hiring retirees instead of college students for our seasonal work. To many problems in recent years related to following instructions and understanding the tasks well enough to get them done right.

20 years working is all you need

I think that in some ways it is easier to save when you are young. When I came out of college I was used to living on a budget I could not even imagine now. You have good health, are used to a thrifty lifestyle and most friends are in the same place. The important thing is the desire to...

20 years working is all you need

Sounds like you had a great time and made some great memories. I know I sure did during that decade. I never started a business, it always seemed like too much work. This discussion makes me want to do my 20's all over again. Be harder this time, I would probably have to cut down on some of the...

20 years working is all you need

Why not start work around 30-35 then retire at 50-55? You get a decade to goof off and take advantage of better early retirement deals that happen in your 50's.

20 years working is all you need

I agree that marriage can affect FIRE either way. I think that kids definitely slow things down, but do not make it impossible to do in 20 years. I seem to remember some surveys that reported couples without kids were financially wealthier than those with kids. I figure my kids put RE back about...

20 years working is all you need

It will be 20 years next August and I can RE anytime after. I started at 21k and have not yet broken 100k in annual salary. I only worked part time for 5 years and I am not a good saver either. I did it with real estate and luck. Tyran - I agree about taking risk early. Nothing to loose and...

20 years working is all you need

I was reading the average joe thread and it got me wondering about how long it should take until you can RE. Now anyone can FIRE if they make 200k per year, but I am thinking about the rest of us. Those that make a median salary in a median cost of living location. My thinking is that by...

    Charitable Remainder Trusts

Wab - My thinking is that one of the implications of SWR is that you would never draw a fund down to zero on purpose. Thus, the residual asset amount ultimately only benefits those that inherit it. Just having the money gives some psychological security, but I have other pots of money for that...

    Charitable Remainder Trusts

I think I will understand this better with a simple example. Lets say I have real estate with a basis of 50k that is presently worth 550k. After selling expenses it results in a net of 500k. Let’s assume that any invested money will get a steady 8% per year in interest over 35 years. If I sell...

Wab - I thought that there will not be cap gains on the sale because the charity is selling the asset. Maybe I misread. Certainly I would pay taxes on the distribution, but wouldn't that be the case if I invested it and withdrew gains? Bear

    Charitable Remainder Trusts

I am not sure that the inflated real estate of SoCal will offer much inflation protection for the next decade or so. The 'experts' also do not see much price increase (if any) prospect in the near future in my area.
