    Hawaii - Maui & Big Isl - Advice/Tips?

You have already gotten a lot of good advice on places to stay and things to do, but you did mention diving and haven't gotten many comments on that, so I will offer a few personal opinions: If you are staying around Kihei on Maui, that is where a lot of dive boats leave from, especially to...

    where do I invest

As already said, you really need to get at least some education before investing in anything, but you should definitely avoid forex. Forex is for professionals ... and for companies that money from small investors like you and keep it all.

    Vanguard Heads-UP--Rant?

Their web site is one of the things Fidelity sees as a real competitive advantage and they have just put more work into it than most on-line brokerages. I have seen individuals post here who don't like the Fidelity site, but every review I have seen rates them as the best or nearly best web site...

    Rob Black, genius or not?

Rob Black is a favorite of mine and I highly recommend him. He has a definite point of view and you probably won't agree with everything he says, but he is a smart guy, knowlegable and seems very objective. He answers a lot of caller questions including giving opinions on specific stocks and...

    Ric Edelman's new book

From listening to him a few times, I think he is still recommending mutual funds, he is just very critical of certain funds and certain practices of certain funds. He isn't the first person to talk about this, but this really isn't written about or discussed very much, he apparently has a...

    Anyone Have Opinions About VHGEX

Seems like you were right the first time and maybe you should have just stuck to your indexing principles. The EFA index has done as well or a bit better at lower cost and many of the other international indexes have done way better.

    Walgreen debacle

If you look at the list of stocks with the biggest percent decline for the day, almost all the pharmacies made the list somewhere, with WAG at the top of the list.

Success Magazine's 5-Step Online Investing Method

Odds are they aren't all spammers. There clearly are people who buy these programs which means there have to be people who don't know they are junk ... and some of those people probably just end up here. I would also guess that since most of these programs seem to have advertising budgets...

And if he was able to make $2M by the age of 40 in one of those jobs, that is even more reason to listen to him, so why not be nice.

    Allied Capital (ALD)

Probably. That is certainly one of the reasons the stock is volitile. Even if you don't own it, this is an intersting stock to follow. I don't know any other that has this much constant controvery surrounding it...especially without anything really material ever seeming to happen.

    Allied Capital (ALD)

I have owned ALD for a few years now and as an income generating stock it has done very well for me and I plan on continuing to hold it for the forseeable future. It is important to understand that there are a lot of people who absolutely hate ALD, it is frequently attacked and heavily shorted...

Ben Stein's Recommended Portfolio -- Comments?

Since the S&P 500 defines beta, almost anything else is going to be higher or lower, but that means almost nothing by itself. What I question is why you consider volitility necessarily a bad thing? A stock or index that significantly out performs the S&P 500, like the EFA has, will have a...

Ben Stein's Recommended Portfolio -- Comments?

Why more volitile? At least recently, the EFA has had about the same volitility as the S&P 500. It has just performed a lot better. In any case, Ben's allocation looks fairly good to me, although I would actually have just a little more international than he recommends.

    John Hancock Closed End Funds

I own several CEFs including HTD, all of which have done consistently well in the last year or two. I plan on keeping my position there, but I have to admit that HTD has probably been the worst performer amoung the few CEFs I own.

    Saving money on utility bills

There is a pretty good article on these systems in the June 4th edition of Forbes. Takes a sizable investment, but they show a payoff in around eight years even in Chicago, less in warmer areas. Makes even more sense if the alternative is to replace a conventional system.

    UN-Traded REITs

I don't have direct experience with unlisted REITs, but we have invested in several TICs where we have actual fractional ownership in properties. These usually offer the option of investing in the same properties this way or as unlisted REITS and most of the features, other than the legal...

I have fractional shares in all my ETFs with Fidelity and I expect many other brokerages are the same.

Whoa! A super old mutual fund!

According to CEFA: "The history of closed-end funds began in 1893, more than 30 years before the first mutual fund was formed in the United States." but I have no idea if that fund is still around. Probably not.

Any interest in a stock picking board?

There definitely seem to be enough people who are interested in individual stocks to make it worth having a specific forum for that discussion. A separate board has some advantages over a thread for doing this. It is more permanent which is appropriate for an open ended topic and it is also less...

kiyosaki has reached new low - unbelievable

As the length of this thread seems to demonstrate, RE and stocks are simply very different things and you really can't make a direct comparison between them that makes a lot of sense. Being a landlord or even flipping houses is a business. Buying mutual funds is passive investing. Owning and...

Do you prefer Fidelity or Vanguard for rollover 401k to IRA?

More or less everything. It is just well done and something they have obviously put a lot of effort into, had some very sharp technical people develop and continue to improve. Everyone may not agree, but I have never heard anything but positive comments about their site and in any of the reviews...
