    Meditation

When the stress of my job gets the best of me I used to try to meditate. I've got the cd's, candles, mats, ect. I guess it works if you stick with it but who has the time to close a door, turn on relaxing music and stare at a candle everyday. I don't.... So I discovered a new method of...

529 plan, soon to be dad

Thats right, DW is pregnant and if all goes well we will have our first this year. I've been reading about state sponsored 529 plans and have a question that I'm sure many of you have thought through. How much do you plan to save? The calculators set up by investment companies seem to over...

    Enrolling in Medicare

My mom is receiving early survivor social security benefits (widow) since she turned sixty. I've been trying to find out if she qualifies for early Medicare because I thought I read she would qualify after receiving SS benefits for 24 months which will happen in 5 months. I have called the...

What happens if the unthinkable happens?

I'll one up you. If you listen to scientist and not politicians, which can be hard to distinguish nowadays, you will really get scared when you hear about a possible magnetic reversal on earth along with the lack of sun spot activity,...wait for it.....wait for it,.... ice age. Ice ages happen...

Are 25-35 year olds feeling discouraged yet?

I'm 34 and DW is 30. We have not stopped dumping money into our 401ks and IRAs that are all high risk, long term managed funds. The only thing we've changed, like most people, is that we are now saving more for our short term goals. Am I the only one that believes this recession could...

    Bear Markets...Just so you know

Hypothetically if someone started to invest in 1973 and continued on investing through the 7 1/2 year recovery (using dollar-cost averaging) onward to retirement 30 years later would they have timed the market nicely b/c they bought in low early in their investment career?

    15 yr vs. 30 year

Thanks for the responses. So I would be better off coming up with an extra 30-40K to put 20% down and get a 30yr fixed and invest extra equity in my investments? Are there any other types of creative loans for disciplined investors?

    15 yr vs. 30 year

Lets say you are looking to buy a house for 650,000 with 100,000 down (using a creative mortgage like 80/15/5). It seems the you come out way ahead if you go with a 15 year mortgage, making the commitment that you will live there for that long, vs. paying the front end of a 30 year mortgage a...

Thanks, good information! I first tryed to talk to the 401k company, Manulife Financial (John Hancock), and they basically told me that the max. paycheck limits are set by the company, not the plan provider. So I had to go to my HR department and ask for that info (have not heard back yet)...
