Gold - 13 year cup and handle breakup

Inflation part 2. WW Part 3? Absolutely no fiscal control. Craziness in general. While Gold is hitting new highs, Silver is a long way away from its high of almost $50/ounce. Gold and Silver miners are also quite a bit from their all time highs. One could take this as a negative or that...

Treasury Bills, Notes, and Bonds Discussion 2024+

Same - bought some. Also bought 1 & 2 month T-Bills and just put in orders for Monday's 3 & 6 month auctions. I had been somewhat accumulating in money markets as things matured and w/this little leg up in rates started to deploy. Still have about one month's worth of cash either in the MM...

    Fixed Income Investing II

This. I just don't get chasing yields to things that might be severely impacted in a real downturn. I am not saying that I wouldn't invest in lower quality bonds (I have), but only when we are *already* in the midst of that down turn so that the yield spread risk premium is much wider than...

    So what am I missing?

Hope that piggybacking on this thread is OK. I am in a similar situation. I am considering buying a new (to me) home in another state. But I would like to do the purchase prior to selling my current home (for a variety of reasons, some good, some not so good). In any case, I am now retired...

Typically there is a $1 per 1k notational fee. So yes, there is commission. THe effective yield (after the commission) is shown on the preview screen. This is why I suggested you compare your net hit of selling early vs. doing a short term margin loan in a non-tax-deferred account.

Best CD, MM Rates & Bank Special Deals Thread 2024 - Please post updates here

You will have to sell it. If there there are already bidders you could accept the bid (assuming they are bidding for at least that amount of the issue that you own). If not, you will have to solicit bids. You will get whatever was bid plus accrued interest. If the bids are bad and this is a...

    Suggestions for estimating future RMDs

Thanks! I modified the spreadsheet to add a "Yes" "No" option for deferring until 73 for those under 73 currently. https://tinyurl.com/RMDCalc2

Was Microsoft a Value Trap in 2012?

Interesting. I didn't comment on that thread, but did buy a smallish holding in Mr. Softie (MSFT) in April 2010. I bought it because I though it represented value, its core cash flow products were still in place, and I didn't think they would follow the route of IBM. I've held it since and...

    Poll: Dune Part 2

As I stated I've never read the book series. Given the movies piqued my interest, I might just do some spring reading.

    Bond Call Notification

Just want to let you know you were correct on this! I was pleasantly surprised that it hasn't (yet) been called. Next stop 4/30/24. I also have a 5.7% JP Morgan Chase callable CD (matures 10/31/24, first call 4/30/24. Maybe even this will escape the call man's hatchet, but then again it is...

    Poll: Dune Part 2

Background: I never read the book. When I saw Dune long long ago, it sucked. Fast Forward: I watched the remake (Dune 1) at home streamed. I have a really good setup (audio wise) and thought the movie was very good. So yesterday a friend and I saw Dune 2 at a local theatre. I go to very...

PSA: BROKERED CD'S cannot be transferred in-kind to Fidelity

Follow Up - Not so fast on the PSA! So I had an unrelated call with Fidelity today (with their fixed income group). After the conversation, the rep asked me if there was anything else to discuss - and I brought up the previous conversation (transfer of brokered CD's). She asked me for the...

    Bond Call Notification

I keep an indicator in my spreadsheet (color coded) for callable issues along with a callable date. I have one that is pretty much guaranteed to be called, JP Morgan Chase 5.6% CD maturity 9/6/24, issue 10/31/23, first call 3/6/24). My decision on this one (when I bought it) was that I would...

    2024 Investment Performance Thread

Interesting question! For myself, I am including T-Bill's and CD's marked to market. For CD's I am not including accrued but not yet distributed interest. I capture the interest at maturity (and with a ladder of a lot of instruments that has been happening regularly). Given your question, I...

Treasury Bills, Notes, and Bonds Discussion 2024+

Answers: 1) Who really knows? 2) Because if they shifted their selling to longer maturities it would drive up long term rates and have a greater impact on things like mortgage rates and capital investment costs. 3) If they think inflation has been "beat", then borrowing short will be cheaper in...

Treasury Bills, Notes, and Bonds Discussion 2024+

Most are following a laddering plan or trying to keep average duration from dropping too much. That is what I am doing to a certain extent. Regarding FZDXX, if you just want the best rate (regardless of duration), you should be buying the 2-month T-Bill which is currently yielding 5.4% (while...

    2024 Investment Performance Thread

February underperformance continues. Hurt due to overweight in Apple and to a certain degree "outflows" from savings (I don't differentiate between investment accounts and overall. Now that I am retired, I am definitely spending more $ than what is coming in, eventually that situation should...

%'s for my income sources (2022, rough estimates): Wages 45% Pension 29% Dividends 11% Interest 1% Roth Conversions 15% (total 101% due to rounding) 2023 will be "interesting" because the interest portion will have shot up...

PSA: BROKERED CD'S cannot be transferred in-kind to Fidelity

Here is my understanding: 1) It is sold in the secondary market, so bid/ask. 2) Yes, you will get accrued interest (in addition to what bid you hit) 3) Best rate on a non-callable 4+ year (early 2028) CD at Fidelity is 4.3%. So 0.7% or 14% less interest from now till maturity. However...
