    Strategic Defaults

So, to paraphrase one of the stories: Ms. Richey stopped making payments on her mortgage, discovered she has a lot more money to spend, is planning a cruise, and now has a bigger, nicer house. And of course is very happy about this lifestyle change. In other words, "Screw everyone else...

    GOLD up up and ?

I'm not particularly adept at investing, I have no special skills or knowledge in the area, except that I guess I'm aware of my own ignorance and that limits the stupid things I can do. I started investing in the late 90s, and thank the deity that I've had money in the gold and real estate...

    How are bonuses taxed?

It's not the frequency of the payment, but the period that the payment is supposed to represent. Consider a gross paycheck of $1,000. If the employer reports this as payment for a one week period, the tax withholding would be estimated at a rate of $52,000 annually (52 weeks X $1,000). Now...

    How are bonuses taxed?

When I reported bonuses for my employees to our payroll company, I would tell them for what period of time they covered (bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly, etc.) which would affect how they would be taxed (the shorter the time period, the more taxes withheld generally, since a shorter period meant a...

    Debt Free!

I was looking forward to getting the title (is that different than a release of lien?), but I think we are going to get a HELOC (with a $0 balance of course) to have available for emergency reasons. If we do, our bank says they will need to hold on to title of course. But I like the idea of...

    Debt Free!

Thanks all. We struggled with the mortgage paydown versus investment decision for a while. For us, the psychic benefit of not having debt was more beneficial than possibly getting higher returns on our investments or tax deductions. But I can certainly understand why a lot of people prefer to...

    Debt Free!

Well, I paid off the remaining principal on my mortgage today, and I believe that for the first time in 20+ years that my wife and I are completely debt free. It feels great!

    Were The Hippies Right?

It did exactly what it was designed to do. To not kill bugs! ;)

    Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD

It looks like many in the porn industry will be going with hybrid discs (Total HD). Also, the Internet wasn't a factor during the Beta/VHS war, I've heard that you can like, um...get porn on your computer...or something like that. That's what a buddy of mine told me that at least.

    Solo 401k Questions

Haha, of course! :) I was merely commenting in response to Brewer's comment "THey made it quite painless for us to set up a solo K and it cost nothing." All I assume he meant was that they didn't charge anything for the setup, in return for customers putting money into their mutual funds...

    Solo 401k Questions

I think there is a more-likely-than-not probability that I will be in a lower tax bracket in retirement. If I had to wager one way or the other (which in effect I do), I'll wager on the lower tax bracket.

    Solo 401k Questions

Good point. Short of disaster, the money won't be touched for 20 years, at which time it will be taxed as income as it's withdrawn, probably in a lower tax bracket. So is the overall higher tax negated by the fact that it gets to grow tax free for 20+ years? I'll have to run some numbers...

    Solo 401k Questions

That's too bad about Vanguard, I was hoping to keep everything there. I assume then that I'd have to go with a 3rd party admin? Probably not something I want to do. Is "Fido" Fidelity? Thanks. I will definitely have other earned income (W-2), but won't be participating in any retirement plans...

    Solo 401k Questions

Hello all, I am currently selling my portion of a business to my partners. As part of my compensation, I will receive money over a two year period (spanning three calendar years). I'd like to take a portion of that money as income, so I can put it towards a tax-advantaged account. The remainder...
