My FIRE Strategy -- Roth Conversion

I know you dislike spreadsheets, but check out I-orp.com which helped guide me some with conversion planning.

Could bonds be great in 2024?

I have some Ira $ in VBTLX, so it might be wise to convert to Roth early in the year instead of waiting.

    SS benefit taxes

I often see a major confusion: 85% of your Social Security being taxed does NOT mean your Social Security is taxed at 85%. Chew on that.

Class of 2016 in their 5th Year of Retirement

Time has flown for sure! Class of 2016 here. Hiked ( most of) the Appalachian trail, cycle 5000+ miles a year, and check in to this site less regularly. Really appreciate the wisdom here that helped allow us to enjoy ER.

    Backing Into the Garage Trick

we have very limited width space in our 2 car garage. Backing my truck in allows me to hug the wall and have more space for the drivers between the vehicles.

The Rule of 55 and a ROTH 401k

I retired 3 years ago at 55 and have withdrawn from my 401k during that time. My company will not allow me to roll my Roth 401k to my Roth it a without moving everything out. Ymmv.

    Video Doorbell recommendations

These options look very favorable to me, with a second house. Question for those using video doorbells on a second house: do you pay for internet service or is there some Verizon/Sprint/AT&T hotspot/interface that you use?

    Early 401k w/d after 55

Yeah this was news to me as I was told by VG rep as I was finishing the transaction. Wondering if I could roll it off to a self directed ira and then exhaust it to avoid the fee. (Sneaky??😀) I am deliberately taking 401k funds so my rmd 's are smaller when I am collecting SS.

    Early 401k w/d after 55

My company just imposed a $50 w/d fee. It has been $0 for me for the past 2 years. Retired at 55.

    Have you exercised lately?

I typically cycle 3 days a week of 50 miles, with an occasional 70-100 thrown in. 2 days a week for an hour at the gym doing upper body and core. This system has kept me at my high school weight, yet eating pretty much anything I want. I recommend to the OP that initially you strive for more...

    Class of 2016

Some observations three months in to retirement: . spend very little time at this forum, and used to live at this site. . Honey do list may take a year or so to complete, but that's OK. . anticipated travel being so awesome, but it can be tiring. . decompression may take longer than I imagined...

    Empty Nesters Purging Homes Experience

We had good results and good experiences with Craigslist for higher value items. Gave a bunch of things to nephews that were moving into their first home - that was really satisfying. (kind of cute as they were fighting over some of our stuff behind our backs! - no, I want the grill, etc.)...

Nice job at a very young age! I looked back to see when I crossed that mark and see that I hit that in 2010 when I was about 50. I am currently at 1.6MM and retiring at 55 in 3 weeks. Aggressively added funds over the past 5 years, did some downsizing, and enjoyed some pretty nice market runs.

    Life just before FIRE

jcretire77 - I had to laugh, as I just changed my password for the last time as well. I figured out that they allowed repetition after 3 new ones, so I cycled through from 1 to 4. Only 20 work days for me (after today), and most of the nightmares have passed for me. I did not see your name in...
