Weird reactions to early retirement announcement.

Stories like this are so common that I was very hesitant to tell anyone that I was retiring at 51. However, I got no weird reactions at all from anyone; family, friends or co-workers. Everyone seem happy for me.

Dear Abbey says we need help!

I found this hilarious. However, as long as most people have this attitude, my investments will keep humming along.

    Free at Last

I will start seeing open time in my schedule the first week of August, and it will tail off to about 70-80% free by the end of the year. Unfortunately, some of my consulting jobs will drag on another couple of years. I am OK with that as long as I only work 1-2 days a week.

Thanks everyone. I do not feel retired yet as my schedule was booked solid through the end of July, but I know it is coming and that makes a difference!

    Free at Last

Six weeks ago I notified all of my clients that I would no longer accept new assignments after June 30. Today is the day! From this point forward my work load will slowly decrease to zero. Free at last, free at last, thank God Almighty I am free at last! (with apologies to Dr. King)

Building a Home without a Budget

Just to be clear, the house we are building is currently at about 200% of the price of the used homes we were looking at before deciding to build, which most importantly means we were not making and apples to apples comparison in deciding to build new. The house we are building is at 143% of...

Building a Home without a Budget

Carefully step down on the spring and release the jaws, then drive to the hospital in my heated car or call 911 on my cell phone? Isn't that one of the advantages of opposable thumbs and intelligence ;D? Wait, you said low cost and hospitals are anything but :)!

Building a Home without a Budget

We had the budget nailed down (so I thought), and we have received everything explicitly included in the contract. The problem was in the details. No contract defines everything, and at some point you have to assume that the parties are going to behave "reasonably." I think where my contractor...

That would be better, as I would like to have the second coming of Jesus Chris as a child! That is the only way it would happen on either side :-).

Building a Home without a Budget

Actually, I agree to work an extra year to pay for it. I retired about a month ago. That is part of the problem, as the extra year was not enough because the cost keeps going up, up and up. I feel like I quit about six month before I should have.

Building a Home without a Budget

I am trying very hard to accept this and keep my wife happy. The problem is that every time I get to the point that I accept what is, is, we get a bill for another $5-10K. The constant change orders are what is really causing the problem. If I hade been told 145% up front, I likely would have...

Building a Home without a Budget

Actually, I refused to sign the contract due to the budget deficiencies. The contract is between my wife and the builder :-). However, it is fair to say I consented.

Building a Home without a Budget

Do not read if you are unwilling to face my whining throughout a long post :-): I will leave aside the messy details, but my wife refused to set a budget for our new retirement home, stating that she was willing to spend whatever it took to get what she wanted (in fairness, my wife has always...

Small Business and Retirement - Ethics Question

Thanks in part to the feedback here, I decided to send a nice e-mail to all my clients letting them know that I will stop taking new assignments in six weeks, and explaining that I am retiring. The response was very positive. I have to agree that this was a much better choice than simply...

Correct. My oldest open file was started in 2007!. I figure there will be trickles of work for the next 4-5 years, but 95% will be done in the next 18 months.

    THANK YOU Early Retirement Forums!

Small Business and Retirement - Ethics Question

    Does this seem unusual?

From my experience with MoA, I would be surprised if the total expenses associated with this account were less than 1.5%, and perhaps as high as 2.5%. Thus, your actual return is likely on the order of 0.5 to 1.5%. Nice in today's rate environment, but not as nice as it looks on the surface.

Basically the first. He mentioned that he was not able to pay his taxes because the IRS would not help him. He is deaf and 80% blind, so he sent them a letter asking them to calculates his taxes and send him a bill :). They did not accommodate him, so he let it drop :).
