I don't know whether to be offended or more determined

LOL...I am 38 and work for City Government where EVERYONE but me is on the 30 year and out plan. I opted for the self-managed plan. One day a fella of similar age/senority as me made the comment that WE would be there 20ish more years. I said, NO, I have 5-8 more years to go. The room got quiet...

Smelling the roses along the way

My DW and I are taking a calculated view also. We have saved in our tax deferred accounts pretty aggressively and if continued would be able to retire with extra in 12 years or so. But...we recently decided to save for just a few more years and then one of us RE (ME) to have a...

    A milestone and "thank you"

Freeline, Alot of basic stuff that wasn't basic to me. Low cost funds, the 72t rule, articles pointed out, inspiration from all walks of life, asset allocation, tax strategy, home buying, home selling, exit strategies, insurance options, the list goes on and on. Real problems, real people...

What is everyone's favorite retirement hobby?

I am buying my mom's place, with several acres nestled in the middle of nowhere in the appalachian hills. -Family time. Friend time. Volunteer time. -Target shooting...pistol and bow -Gardening -Ginsenging, root digging -Making our house ultra-hedonistic, with lots of places to relax,nap...

    Buying parent's house

I do have siblings, but none are interested...they all have homes of their own nearby. I am the only one out of state, and this would put me back in touch with them. They are glad for me to maintain the homeplace and keep it a central family meeting place. I think it will work out fine...

    Buying parent's house

    A milestone and "thank you"

I just realized yesterday that between my 401k, my member directed PERS account, and my 457b deferred comp account, I recently passed the 150K mark. Yay for me and DW!!! This isn't net worth, just all the tax deferred retirement. NW is higher. Thanks to all of you for your contributions on...

    How long did it take?

I joined a 401k at work 11 years ago, but just put in the 10% my boss recommended. Rolled that over when I went to work for the city 5 years later. Then I started PERS and the 401k at 10% for a few more years. A couple of years ago started a 457b at 8%, but still thought I'd be here 19 more...

    457 Plan

I am plugging everything I can into my Ohio 457 plan...because of the NO PENALTY ability to withdraw at any age. I also have a 401k from a previous job, and a pers account, but both of these are stuck til I hit 55 years old. I plan on using the 457 to fill the gap between ER and 55, then tap...

    Buying parent's house

Thanks for the ideas. Before I talk to the lawyer I like to have a list of questions to ask him in case he overlooks something, and you all have mentioned important aspects.

How distant is your FIRE date?

Soon! I have done some fairly strategizing/calculations and have decided that I can FIRE at 43 years old in 2012. The DW is 11 years younger and will w*rk another 5-10 years as needed to round out the details. She LIKES to w*rk!!! I will be the homemaker, handyman, gardner, chef, nanny, and...

    Buying parent's house

Hmmm I don't know the specifics, but annual property taxes where they are is less than $1000/year, so it's not a big consideration. Once we agree verbally, we will consult a lawyer for the finetuning. A friend of mine today made a good suggestion. He said I should ask mother to mention...

    Buying parent's house

We vacationed there the past two weeks. Such solitude...most people would be bored. We walked, swam, talked, tv'd, saw elk, ate garden food, and talked about buying the family homeplace. Prior to talking it over, my dad happened to mention what he would expect for the place...and it was...

    Buying parent's house

Heck, the place is large enough, we could all live there if need be. We plan to move no earlier than 4 years...that's when I am fully vested in my RMA. My 11year younger DW may begin looking for a j*b there as early as then, and we'd play it by ear from there. No more than 5 years though...

    Buying parent's house

Thanks, this is the kind of ideas I'm looking for. Mom had thought of getting a nice smaller modular home and putting it on the same property (there are several acres). Or putting it on a separate piece of land she owns just a half-mile away. I could send them money for the next five years...

    Buying parent's house

My mom and dad are still self-sufficient, but wont be forever. Dads starting to have a harder time keeping the homeplace up. My wife and I were thinking of offering to buy their home while they still live there. In other words, we would send them money for the next few years until we FIRE...

    Allergies

I moved to Ohio several years ago and started having bad seasonal allergies. Nasal, eyes itching, throat itching...horrible. I took Claritin, clarinex, and different otc meds for a few years, but these seemed to "suppress" the symptoms rather than alleviate them. This year I wanted to try the...

What's the smallest amount you can retire on?

Back to the original question. I have known alot of people back in the hills of east kentucky who lived long lives without ever topping 500 dollars/month. They buy staple foods, plant gardens, use wood/coal heat, hunt, dig ginseng, draw foodstamps and live simple mountain lives. In fact...

    How much is enough?

I have flexible numbers/scenarios. If I reach 400K and chose to, then I could afford to FIRE to the old homeplace, set up housekeeping near family and travel/live modestly forever.(I'm from deep in the appalachians). Or if I feel like w*rking longer, with 800K I can live well in a less...
