    Trying to figure me out

Ahh, it's been raised from the ashes!!! Thanks for the wonderful comments. Very much appreciated. So, I've been staying the course, but I'm not kidding anyone - it is tough at times. Maybe I can further explain some of my weirdness. I'm a 1st generation from Eastern Europe in the States. My...

    Trying to figure me out

Thanks guys:flowers:. You seem to understand me better than my colleagues and many peers do. Yes crazy connie. The expensive clothes are work only. I learned how to play the game early on after some mishaps. I dress for success in the office. Outside of the office, plain jeans and a t-shirt...

    Trying to figure me out

Thanks guys.:coolsmiley: This really seems to be the gist of it. My buddy & I were driving to the gym today and I mentioned this to him. He says 'Remember how we used to treat Chris (Chris is a friend of ours who always received the 3rd degree from us)? Well, you're basically Chris here...

    Trying to figure me out

Midpack - Thanks, and I do agree with you in many ways. Most of my peers live paycheck to paycheck. They are fine with that. I did do that at one point, and realized how I had nothing. Changed my ways, learned from my parents who are very frugal, learned from others, found this site, etc...

    Trying to figure me out

Hey guys, Long time no post on here. Hope everyone is well. I've been staying the course of working hard , being frugal, investing, etc., and I think that I am in a very good place at 27. I found my groove a couple years ago and it's been on autopilot since then. I do have an issue...

    Holiday Parties

Wow, so many responses. Thanks guys! I did let the office manager (party coordinator) know before the deadline that I will NOT attend. She is the one responsible for planning, etc. To save face, I did ask her a day before the party if it would be alright if I can at least drop by for 15...

    Holiday Parties

Hi guys, I haven't posted on here in ages as I've been busy...working:rant: I had a question regarding Holiday parties and what the protocal is with them. I lean on the side that you should go, even if you don't want to, for at least 30 minutes. Show your face, shake some hands, etc. But...

Ridiculously young dreamers: can ER skills be taught to the next generation?

While I wouldn't say FIRE, but my parents did teach us the value of hard work, saving, and investing from about the time we are able to run as kids. For myself, it didn't really stick too well as a teenager as I kept getting wrapped up in the popular crowd which requires wasting money on...

    Pre-2008 Assessment - Please advise

Urchina - I thought $5,000 would be a good amount just to get me started in having something set up for now. I live very frugally, and I am single at the moment. I would definitely bump that value up once married and have a family. innova - I'm a fan of Fama's, and I've studied his work in...

    salary increase

18.2% in 2007. 16.8% in 2006. I work in finance - we'll see what happens this year though. That level can't be sustained for too many years. I think I've never worked less than 60 hours/week in both of those years.

    Pre-2008 Assessment - Please advise

trying2save - I failed the first time I took it. You know, walked in with the Magna Cum Laude swagger about ~1 year into my first job and decided that I didn't need to prep and study that much since I was setting curves in finance classes in undergrad - I even decided to skip studying ethics...

Anybody regret the college degree concentration they received?

Interesting. I started off college as a history & philosophy major. My high school advisor asked me: "How will you make money? Go into business; make the other things your hobby." Took a few business courses, then switched colleges; left with economics & finance majors and accounting minor.

immigration: what generation american are you?

1st generation here; learned about LBYM and everything money from my parents who, although uneducated, really made it in America (in about 30 years from a net worth of ~$100 to a net worth of ~$3.8 million). lazygood4nothinbum - Interesting find. I was that way up until the end of college...

Have you made a significant career change: and how has it worked out?

Yes, I have. 15-18 I was working for a psychiatric hospital as a peer counselor and later a tech. I was still in high school, but worked part time during school, and full time over summers and breaks. I was going to go into psychology, and eventually psychiatry, but crashed emotionally by the...

What is more important to you, taste or nutrition?

Definitely nutrition, but I have found that it is possible to have both (for the most part). Barring eating out, I'd rather whip up a shake of a bunch of 'junk' but it is (1) healthy and (2) contains everything which my body needs, and nothing which it doesn't (i.e., fats, etc.).

    Large insider buying!!

It actually sparked my interest so I researched it some more. I think it's just a bullish stance. It's only one insider who made the purchases, and it was a position change of 90,000. That doesn't appear to be a whole lot to me. A similar example is Pep Boys (PBY) with lots of recent...

    Large insider buying!!

Yes, it's a good indicator; short interest is a better indicator. No guarentees though.

Is this an alcoholic or just a heavy drinker?

I'd say that there is a good possibility. The thing with being an alcoholic though, is that it's not defined by consumption or frequency - you can drink 6 beers in one month and still be an alcoholic. It's defined by your actions, behaviors, and consequences which ensue after drinking, and what...

    Benazir Bhutto assassinated

LOL, I don't think that's the case. Good, quick thinking... I'm not too familiar with her background, but from what I do know is that the people of Pakiston loved her. She was a member of the People's Party in Pakistan - the people loved her, and would rally around her. From my understanding...

What do you pay for a haircut?

$0.00 Thank God my best girl friend from high school and I are still good friends. She works at a trendy salon and cuts my hair for free. Okay, well, she still probably has a crush me. Actually, I'll buy her a coffee or lunch/dinner once in a while as payback, but that is nowhere near how...

    Benazir Bhutto assassinated

Gunshots and bomb blast indicate a martyrs death. Withstanding bullet wounds and a bomb blast, but receiving the fatal blow in your own doing by trying to fall back into the limo but nailing your head on a latch denies you a martyrs death. In the Islamic world, there isn't anything more...

    Question for Americans

Interesting comment on tipping. My parents are European immigrants, and in most of Europe, you don't tip. So living in the U.S., it's been rather interesting as us (the kids) know that you are supposed to tip, but the parents don't really get it. We really had to teach them, and it was not...

OK, How Many 5 Year Olds Could You Take In A Fight

This can't be right. I can take on 33 of them, maybe with fighting dirty. 33 is a fricking army! I'm not superman.

    Pre-2008 Assessment - Please advise

Hi all, Thanks for the comments! CyclingInvestor: I'm well aware of survivorship bias, albeit not in the context of options. Again, I'm still a rookie with der. markets, and would like to get my feet wet a little this year. I won't be playing with much money, I swear. I know that I still...

    Pre-2008 Assessment - Please advise

Hi all - I haven't had a chance to post in a while (or often for that matter) due to being an indentured servent in my career and going to school part time at night, but I'm evaluating 2008 goals and I had some questions. I'll post some details below, but if you can comment and answer two...
