    "Affordability" and a new car

I buy cars that are not flashy and serve my needs. The last car was a minivan, which worked great with a family. I drove that car for 17 years (bought new) and only sold it because it was leaking water into the driver’s side and I couldn’t figure out how. I ended up buying a new Subaru...

Restaurant adding fee for use of credit card

A minimum tip is usually included by default for larger groups. Definitely something to be aware of to avoid double-tipping. In my area it’s usually 6 or more and the tip (service charge) amount is written on the menu. I wouldn’t feel obligated to add anything more, nor do I think it’s expected.

It makes me wonder if they’re seeing a large number of accounts leaving? This might push me to consolidate some accounts.

What Debit/Credit Card Do You Use When Travelling To The UK?

I agree with Audrey on this point, most banks will give you a worst rate than using a credit card. In some cases, you also have to be aware of the spread, which can be fairly large. But glad you found a better deal. As always, this is a good thing to check for yourself, keeping in mind that...

What Debit/Credit Card Do You Use When Travelling To The UK?

I opened a Wise account (formerly Travel Wise), not for travel purposes, but for personal reasons. I briefly compared their rate to Visa’s exchange rate and the Wise rate was better. Wise offers a debit card that you could use specifically for travel. It might be a better deal, but it could...

How much do you spend per month on fitness?

I have an annual yoga membership. Last year it was $1200, but they increased to $1350. I bike regularly on a bike that I bought over 12 years ago (30-40 mile rides on average, with an occasional century). Ongoing costs for that is low. And then there’s skiing. Gear is many years old now, but...

    Blow that Dough 2024

We’ That’s one way to keep costs down. :) We opted for a hotel in Lauterbrunnen and Airbnbs elsewhere. Cost-wise it comes out about the same. Eating out is expensive. There are ways to make it less expensive, but we’re ok for the convenience and experience. And then there’s the trains. Glad...

How to get stock/bond prices into excel

No, both Google and Apple have their own built-in function to retrieve stock quotes, along with other information about the stock. You can’t use one with the other. The function in Google Sheets is ‘GoogleFinance’ and in Apple Numbers is ‘Stock.’ A long time ago, there was a plug-in available...

    What have you read recently?

I agree, Scalzi writes a good story. I first read The Collapsing Empire, which was good, but I enjoyed the Old Man’s War series a lot more. I also read The Kaiju Preservation Society. I didn’t enjoy that one as much.

How to get stock/bond prices into excel

Not directly helpful to the OP, but one of the reasons I moved from Excel to Google Sheets. It’s mind-boggling how difficult Excel makes this. The last time I tried, I had to import web data and parse it to get a price inserted into Excel. I use Apple’s Numbers now, but both Google and Apple...

What Debit/Credit Card Do You Use When Travelling To The UK?

I’m currently in Switzerland. I find that I’m using the Fidelity card over Chase Sapphire, probably because it’s the default card on Apple Pay. I need to consider getting rid of the Chase card. The biggest issue is what card to use for primary rental car insurance if I cancel that card.

Ready to be diagnosed by ChatGPT?

The suing argument is silly. Personally, I’m all for eliminating human error. I have no doubt that AI assisted diagnosis/care will lead to better outcomes, which the research so far is proving. As humans, we overestimate our abilities.

Not sure if it was already mentioned here, and if so, apologies, but I just found the ‘Install the app’ option. It’s displayed at the bottom of the menu and shows a video on how to install the forum as a web app. I went through the steps and now have an icon on my iPhone that loads the forum...

I have COVID and need help. I am in panic mode

Easy to say, but in practice it can be a challenge. In my area it’s hard to find doctors that are accepting new patients.

    Airline mileage programs

I went the opposite direction this year and got a Delta Amex Reserve. It gets me halfway to silver status, which is enough for picking seats without paying. I have a few loyalty cards and they all pay for their yearly fee with the added bonus of getting status which has nice perks. For example...

What Debit/Credit Card Do You Use When Travelling To The UK?

Good advice regarding ATMs. I always try to use an ATM that is at a bank location. In some places it’s harder and I’ll make an exception, but it’s rare. I suspect the bank location is also safer from skimmers. The Schwab card I use is only for travel and I don’t have anything else at Schwab. If...

What Debit/Credit Card Do You Use When Travelling To The UK?

I use a Schwab debit card for cash and Chase Sapphire for credit card. Now that the Fidelity card has no foreign transaction fees, I’ll use it along with the Chase card, same as I do at home. I rarely get cash anymore, and didn’t on my last trip to the UK. I used Apple Pay pretty much...

Anyone else NOT watch the news?

I start with the voter pamphlet. Then I look at endorsements from two newspapers that are on opposite sides. In general, if they are in agreement, then that’s usually a reasonable choice. It also helps as a filter for candidates. Depending on the issue, I’ll then dig in further, trying to...

I was going to post an article to a study that was done with regards to news and tribalism, but don't want to derail the thread. I thought it was interesting. If you're curious, google 'experiment fox cnn' and find the article. Mods, feel free to edit as needed (don't want to break any rules...

From an article in the New Scientist: Sounds promising. At least it’s good to know that there is research/trials happening. Unfortunately the article is beind a paywall. I was able to read it through Apple News: https://apple.news/ALM9IRIrGTcqEnUBz_bjVBQ

Anyone else NOT watch the news?

It’s been a long time since I watched news. I will listen to news occasionally, but I find that I turn it off or listen to something else more and more. I mostly read news, using Apple News (news aggregator), but usually only skim the headlines. When I read an article, it’s something of...
