Advice: Sell or Rent my condo?

thanks for the responses.. yeah i'm leaning towards dumping it...heavily... problem is that there are short sales going on below the 399K threshold in my building which is killing property prices. I didn't mention that I am fortunate enough currently to have the liquidity to pay off the entire...

Advice: Sell or Rent my condo?

Hey Everyone...I could use some advice here as I'm a little confused as to what to do. I have a condo in which it's pretty expensive to maintain but am hesitant to sell right now due to the declining market around me. The apartment has about $380K left on the mortgage and I can probably sell...

House Buying: New Construction vs "older" home

The houses that were built during the bubble are probably the worst in terms of construction quality since it was just a profit machine where developers put out inferior products and people were falling all over themselves to buy it. Case in point is that plastic piping that is used for my sink...

House Buying: New Construction vs "older" home

didn't want to bother with paying for the foundation issue as it was stressful enough with some of the other things we wanted to do it. wasn't worth renegotiating i think....as i didn't love the house per se. hopeful to watch "Holmes Inspection" as i'm learning about a lot of things. am scared...

House Buying: New Construction vs "older" home

Just had a deal fall thru on a house because of foundation related issues (had a great inspector that caught it). The house is 40 years old and sadly was not maintained well by the current owner. Now I'm not sure what to do next.... I'm looking in a location in which sadly buying a 800K house...

Capital One Savings Account (vs ING Orange)

i guess it's only a good thing if for some reason the rates drop significantly say the first week of the month... and at least you're locked in til the end of the month... a bad thing if rates go up of course...so yeah i guess it's a wash.. i thought i read that ING calculates it monthly, but...

Capital One Savings Account (vs ING Orange)

Wondering about folks' experience with Capital One Interest Plus Savings (the one that is paying 1.25% + 10% bonus) as compared with ING Orange Savings. InterestPlus Online Savings Account Features One good thing (perhaps) with ING is that the interest is calculated monthly rather than daily...

GEICO: does anyone use them for umbrella insurance?

Just curious. I know a lot of ppl use them for auto insurance, but what about umbrella (ie: including the home, etc) what your experiences are with them to cover that? Or should I go with someone else to get umbrella? I use GEICO right now for my car, but am a bit nervous to ask them to cover...

    W4 withholding strategies?

I'm currently in the 28% tax bracket and just checked my withholding and realized that I'm just doing 2 allowances for 2011 (for myself and my wife). For the 2009 tax year, I got about 5K back from the IRS and I want to stop getting the large return. I now a have a child as well, so I should...

Please explain the paying the 30yr mortgage in 15yrs please?

folks...thanks for the responses. i'm asking this question because of a potentially large mortgage ( >375K) that I may need to take out to finance a new home and the plus/minus of doing a traditional 15yr mortgage vs the flexability of a 30 yr in terms of lower payments. as i'm not sure if i...

Please explain the paying the 30yr mortgage in 15yrs please?

I've seen some posts about Charles Givens' book and I might order it. Can someone explain how the pay the 30 yr mortgage in 15 works? From what I understand it requires knowing (and paying in advance) the principal for the "next" month, but I'm a tad confused about that. Thanks everyone, I...

15 years of my life wasted from bad IRA investments

Hopefully this helps folks to avoid my mistakes. I did a tally last night of the contributions I've made since I've been working back in the mid to late 90's, and it's sad but I'm negative for that time period. I had invested in the Vanguard Aggressive Growth initially, then didn't like the...

good website for portfolio asset breakdown?

any recommendations for a website that will allow me to just plug in the # of shares I have in such and such portfolio and then graph it for me in terms of percentage of assets by class, etc (ie: bonds, international stock, etc)? want that site to obviously keep track of the current price and do...

    Emerging Markets..PRMSX vs VEIEX

definitely weighing the options thanks... PRMSX really needs to outperform VEIEX by about 4-5% to make up for the capital gains taxes, etc cause it's actively managed. still going back and forth...I just wish Vanguard would just do a blanket 5% redemption fee for anyone who holds VEIEX shares...

    Emerging Markets..PRMSX vs VEIEX

interesting thought FUEGO...but unfortunately I work for a broker-dealer and ETF's are off-limits to me other than of course the ones my company supports/recommends which are crazy expensive and not worth it.... I am allowed however to invest in a "normal" mutual fund since they cannot be...

    Emerging Markets..PRMSX vs VEIEX

thanks... yeah it's definitely a toss up decision... was thinking about allocating some $$$ to the Vanguard Total Bond Index and also the Total Stock Market Index - in addition to some emerging market fund. Will probably do 2 with Vanguard and go T. Rowe on the latter.

    Emerging Markets..PRMSX vs VEIEX

The fees (from Vanguard) actually for this "index" fund cannot be ignored...since they charge 0.50 for the purchase of the funds...and then it's another 0.25 for redemptions. So (to me anyway) it's like another 0.75 added to their current expense ratio which no longer makes it that much cheaper...

    Emerging Markets..PRMSX vs VEIEX

It's a tough call... I like T. Rowe (PRMSX) and I like Vanguard...not happy about the "load" that Vanguard charges for the VEIEX fun to discourage the market timers but trying to see in the end if the low cost (otherwise) of it justifies putting $$$ into it, rather than go with T. Rowe...

Thinking about putting some $$$ into Vanguard Total Bond Market Index (bad timing?)

trying to diversify my non-retirement assets and looking at VBMFX...very hesitant because i'm guessing interest rates are gonna go up and we know what that does to bond prices. btw the guy who runs the PIMCO total return fund (biggest bond fund) is quite bearish about bonds in this week's...

Managing multiple funds for IRA or have just one?

yeah sorry to be vague...my risk tolerance right now is that i'm trying to get to 65/35 mix of stocks/bonds. i'm aggressive for my retirement, though not for my non-retirement savings. probably a bit too conservative for the latter to be honest (ie: a bit too much money in savings, that should...

Managing multiple funds for IRA or have just one?

thanks for the responses. I'm actually not a big fan of the target funds since they are pretty opaque to me in terms of their investments (at least to me), but the Vanguard/T Rowe Price ones might be a choice one day for me. How is dealing with the IRS when it comes time to withdraw from...

Managing multiple funds for IRA or have just one?

Currently I have 2 funds (both equity) for my IRA and am thinking about adding more, but the overhead of managing them in the long term is a concern to me. I have one Vanguard one and one from Wells Fargo (they bought out Strong investments which I opened up this fund with a few years back and...

USAA funds vs Vanguard/T. Rowe Price

Just wondering about people's experiences with USAA vs. Vanguard/T Rowe in terms of satisfaction/expense ratios, fee etc. I just became eligible to invest in USAA due to my father's military service and am thinking about the USAA funds for retirement (ie: target funds), but they don't seem to...
