What did you do today? - 2023/2024 version

Had a late AM Dr. appointment, then drive to a MD pharmacy to pick up the prescription (I live in WV). The prescribing doc is licensed in MD so WV pharmacies cannot accept the prescription for a controlled drug. On the way back home I stopped at McDonald's and indulged in my Monthly Day Of...

What is your pet peeve of the day? -- 2021

It depends on state law. In MD (where I'm most familiar with exactly what the law is) as long as the light is either green or yellow when you enter the intersection, then you're legal to continue on through. If the light is red at the instant you enter the intersection, that's a violation...

    Condo common area cleaning dilemma

In a city, yes, but not outside city limits.

    Fentanyl Dangers

I took a similar position. Not because of the school, but I was majoring in Criminal Justice and headed for a career in law enforcement, which I did get. But at the time (early 1970's) no law enforcement agency that I knew of would even talk to you about employment if there was even a hint of...

What did you do today? - 2023/2024 version

Okay, I've gone over to the "Dark Side" in the discussion of electric vs. ICE on OPE (outdoor power equipment). With the "high lift" blade on the Milwaukee battery-electric lawn mower it's just as good as the Toro or Honda's I've used before, but much quieter, lighter, and easier to handle. This...

    Condo common area cleaning dilemma

I once thought as you do, but then we moved from an area with strictly enforced zoning to WV. So much depends on the area, the situation, the people involved, and other intangibles. Here in this part of WV, the county voters in their infinite wisdom have twice rejected zoning in the 20 years...

What did you do today? - 2023/2024 version

It was finally dry enough to mow the back yard with the new Milwaukee battery mower. It's definitely nice to not have to wear ear plugs, and the self-propel motors do a much better job than Toro's "personal pace" method. That was the major incentive to buy it so that makes it worthwhile. With...

A Friend in need , how can I help

That's the problem with people like that, they simply cannot forego immediate gratification if there is a way - any way - to satisfy that desire RIGHT NOW. As others suggested the most the OP should do is pay for a fee-only financial advisor or Dave Ramsey's course. The OP's friend is Ramsey's...

what office software product do you use?

That's what we did too, MS Office Home and Student I think it's called. It only has Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint, which is more than we need since being retired we have no need of PowerPoint. I'm debating whether to even use Outlook since DW is comfortable now with Thunderbird. It works...

What did you do today? - 2023/2024 version

The new PC was delivered about 11:30 this morning, which in itself is unusual. Delivery of anything is usually late afternoon. Anyway, I've been playing with/setting up the new computer since then. I love the 34" display, especially after I figured out how to enlarge the print on documents/web...

What did you do today? - 2023/2024 version

Prepped and painted the last third of the front porch railing. Hopefully that'll hold for at least five years. Also mowed most of the "front forty" and when I was almost done decided to take a break and rest for a bit. Fifteen minutes later the mower would not restart. This is the one I put a...

What did you do today? - 2023/2024 version

Prepped and painted about 2/3 of the front porch railing using a combination of a drill with wire brushes and a die grinder with roloc discs to roughen or remove the old paint. I'll do the rest of it tomorrow. It's a lot harder than it used to be for some reason, I took a two hour nap afterward.

Use It or Lose It Letter From Credit Card

Not laughing at you, my first credit card was a Sears card in 1972 because at the time I worked for Sears and I thought it'd be easier to get since I had such a sterling reputation there (not calling in sick, etc.). I wanted it just to establish a credit rating. I'd buy a shirt or pair of jeans...

Ready to be diagnosed by ChatGPT?

By all accounts AI diagnosis is going to be the way to go whether we like it or not. Faster and more accurate, doesn't get tired or grouchy, what's not to like? Oh, and since it's done by machine it'll be cheaper, like transistors vs. vacuum tubes. Well, one can dream....

What is the last thing you ordered from Amazon?

A couple of books on Windows 11 for the new PC that is to be delivered in a couple of days. I could probably fumble my way around and figure it out eventually but I find it easier by a long shot to just buy a book or two and have a resource handy to look it up. Yeah, all that's probably online...

    Advice on Dry Rot Repair

Yes, if you have a number of things to do that may make it worthwhile. Your profile says you live in Los Angeles so there should be lots of them to pick from there.

    Advice on Dry Rot Repair

Yes, it sounds like a small job that any handyman worthy of the name could fix. The small size may make it hard to find someone though. Expect to pay somewhere between $100 and $300 depending on the area, bearing in mind the guy will have to make two trips to your place, once to see what is...

What did you do today? - 2023/2024 version

Mowed the "back forty" after doing the front yesterday. Also today sprayed four gallons of weed killer, mostly in the back. Since that's where the woods are it's not surprising that most of the weed seeds are coming from there. Tomorrow's project is to cut out/widen the cracks in the front...

    Advice on Dry Rot Repair

Well, depending on the size of the needed repair you might want to think about doing it yourself. If it's something small that can be a project of a few hours or less. The lack of interest from the termite inspector guy may suggest that it's a small job. Can you elaborate on what is rotted and...

    Stolen License Plate

This is absurd. It also warrants a strongly worded letter from you to the state congresscritters and the governor. You're supposed to drive around with either no tags or the remaining one that is reported stolen? State DMV people have never been noted for smarts, at least where I've lived, but...

Forum Downtime - software update scheduled April 23/24

Probably not. As I gather it, the whole site will be down for those two days. The folks behind the green curtain (think Wizard of Oz) will be working some very long days to get it back up but not much will show on the outside.

    Stolen License Plate

Just DO make sure that the theft is reported and you get the replacement tags ASAP. There is a reason someone wanted the tag and you don't want to have to be explaining why you aren't the person who did what they did.

    Blow that Dough 2024

Bought a new computer off the Dell.com site. New XPS system, 64GB RAM, fancy i9 something-or-other processor, medium end graphics with 12 GB RAM, 2TB SSD and one HDD, and a 34" curved screen display. This PC I'm using is a 14-year-old Dell XPS that was pretty high-end in it's day but it's...
