Major Milestone Achieved - Sort of

The goal for FI is 4 mil in investment assets (no house/cars/property/college savings). That would get us to a very comfortable 120k at 3% SWR. Depending on how the markets do, that is looking good in the next 2-3 years. RE is another question. With 3 relatively small children and aging...

Major Milestone Achieved - Sort of

Wanted to provide another update. Same jobs, same wife, same cars, same kids (now 10, 8 and 6) and same house (6 years remaining on the loan). Updated the balance sheet this evening before a mid year check-point with the financial advisor. Was very excited to see that we were 2k over the 3...

Hit a major milestone this week!

A big congratulations to you and the DH. Half a mil already and saving 36% of your own income with a big contribution from employers will make that next milestone all the easier. Good for you!!

Major Milestone Achieved - Sort of

While I very rarely post, I check this blog at least once a week and get so much information and inspiration from the folks that participate. Thank you so much for providing a forum to discuss things with like-minded individuals. I was updating our NW spreadsheet this morning as I have gotten...

Major Milestone Achieved - Sort of

Fantasm: Good question. My wife and I are both lucky to have great paying jobs. While we end up having to pay a boatload in child care, we were able to put away about 140k (401k's, Taxable, 529's, etc) last year and will up that this year. Also the market was able to increase it another 50k...

Major Milestone Achieved - Sort of

Just updated my net worth spreadsheet and had to smile. I actually hit 1M in investable assets. Actually I was only 700 bucks over, so I'm glad the market didn't go down today :). I found it interesting that this was almost exactly one year to the day that I posted the original message...

Major Milestone Achieved - Sort of

I was doing my net worth calculation over the weekend and found a nice surprise. For the first time in my life, I saw 2 commas in the final number. I don't know exactly when it happened, but I tend to update my spreadsheet every 2 months or so with the last time being on January 15th. My best...

    Anybody have a slingbox?

The slingbox itself records up to an hour of programming which is nice if you need to pause for a bit to answer the door for room service :). The best way to take advantage of it is hooking it up to your DVR and controlling it that way.

    Anybody have a slingbox?

The slingbox has been one of my favorite purchases over the past 2 years. I have several uses for it as follows: 1) When travelling for business or pleasure, I am able to control my TV/DVR/etc that allows me to watch local sports and news when on the road. 2) When looking to kill time waiting...

Need help with Parents Investment Strategy

I just realized I should have provided a bit more information as I don't think my parents are as bad off as it seems. My Mom is currently still working and pulls in about 20k a year, which after taxes, actually gets them the amount they need per month currently. Once they retire, Mom will have...

Need help with Parents Investment Strategy

My parent's financial planner is trying to sell them a variable annuity. They have asked for my advice, and after a review of the information provided, I have some serious questions about this plan. Facts: Parent's have $180,000 of investable assets. About 50% of that is in an IRA. Dad is...

    Average Saving Per Year???

    1) 12k in cash 2) 33k in 401k's 3) 63k in taxable 4) 12.6k in 529's (3 kids, 350 a month each) Works out to about 33% savings on gross pay. Just refinanced to a 15 year mortgage 4 months ago and have kids private schooling that eats into the savings a bit.

refi at 4.875, 0 pts almost done!

I locked in at 4.375% for a 15 year fixed with 0 points last week. The appraisal is this Saturday, but I don't anticipate any issues. We close at the end of the month. The nice thing is that we were in a 30 year fixed at 5.75% and for an extra $400 a month we shaved 12 years off our loan...

    Where were you at 31?

I turn 31 a month from today. My wife (31) and I have a NW of about 700k. No inheritence and both paid for our education. This is broken down into about 150k in home equity, 450k in retirement accounts (401k's and IRA's), 40k saved in 529 plans (2 kids, 3 and 2, with a third on the way), and...
