    Live for today

As Nike says "Just Do It"! I agonized over spending big bucks on a 2 week trip to Alaska last June with my brother and his wife. He was sick, so I decided to "Do It". He died in January at age 52. I am eternally grateful that my choice was to go. Screw the money.

    Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

The "Osher" you are referring to is the "Bernard Osher Foundation". They provide grants to many Life Long Learning Institutes (LLI's). When an LLI receives a grant they must use the "Osher" name as part of their own. There are many Osher LLI's throughout the country. However, there are...

    FIRE Car

In March I traded in my 1997 Accord (155,000 miles) for a 2008 Prius. I really like the Prius. My insurance only went up about $10.00 per month, and I love my 48.0 - 48.5 miles per gallon. Literally cut my gas costs in half. My wife drives a 1997 Acura with 152,000 miles on it. Will keep...

What have you read recently? 2009 -2020

Probably get grief over this one, but I decided that this summer I would read all the Harry Potter books (need to keep up with the nieces and nephews, and have something to talk about with them). I'm on number 4 now, To my surprise, I'm having a lot of fun, and that's what counts.

What do you eat for lunch?

We try eat a decent sized lunch and a light dinner. Today I BBQ'd some chicken in the early afternoon. For dinner it would be salad or something else light. If we decide to go out to eat, it's usually for lunch (lunch menus are cheaper and lighter), then again, something like a salad for...

    Obama tax cuts

Maybe someone else knows the answer... I have not been able to find it. Below is a summary of Obama's tax cut proposal from the Wall Street Journal web site: "The largest piece of the overall tax relief would involve cuts for people who pay income taxes or who claim the earned-income credit...

    Chase canceled my credit card

BSSC is right. For the last 2 years my insurance company has sent me advance notice that they were going to pull up my credit records. Each year my auto insurance has gone down and this year my homeowners insurance has gone down. All of that due to a good FICO score.

    Chase canceled my credit card

frayne: I do see your point. However, I have had these cards for eons, going back to much younger, less wiser days. Now they predominantly make up my FICO score. I don't want any longstanding cards to be cancelled due to non-use, and thereby hurt the FICO score. Yes..Using only 1 card would...

Anyone notice a decrease in spending?

Went to a restaurant in Schaumburg, IL this past Saturday. Specifically stopped at a restaurant where the parking lot didn't look full. Went in and saw numerous empty booths and tables. Still had to wait 10-15 minutes. Reason: Restaurant is bringing in fewer employees on each shift to save...

    Why is America not angry?

Angry! Where’s the anger you say! I’m Angry! I’m angry at a congress and an administration who sat back and said, “let’s do nothing, it’ll work itself out.” I’m angry at the all consuming greed of CEO’s and CFO’s and Boards of Director’s who said “fill my pockets anyway you can, and damn...

Government workers are the richest folks? Maybe so.

At the risk of being blasted out of existence, I offer the following: 1. As a Federal employee, now annuitant, I pay taxes just like everyone else. In a sense, I paid my own salary through my income taxes, and I pay my own pension through my income taxes. 2. I pay income taxes on every dollar...

Do you feel guilty about ER?

After 33 years with the same employer, and busting my butt for my pension, I ER'd at age 56. In no way do I feel guilty for that!! It was easy with my siblings, since I am the oldest. They never gave it a second thought. Most of my real friends were from work and they either retired a...

with fall comes a new routine - what are you looking forward to?

Don't Laugh! I look forward to Fantasy Football every year in the fall. I've been doing it for nearly 15 years now. I'm in one league with former co-workers (the good ones) and another one with family. To do it well it takes up a lot of time, but Football is my favorite sport anyway.

    Senior Center...join or not?

We have a really nice, brand new, modern Senior Center only about 1-2 miles from where I live. My problem is that I have the "perception" that everyone going to a Senior Center is 15-20 years older than me and that I won't have much in common with them. Am I off base with that?

    Retirement Is Here

Congratulations on your retirement. You may not believe it yet, but you will adjust quickly and enjoy it. I retired 2 years ago on 12/23/05. Since I had chosen my date 3 years earlier, and let everyone I could, know about it, I had plenty of time to think about the fear, anxiety and dread and...
