2024 Tax Software

TT Premier is now $82.99, a $3 increase from before. Normally I would have already bought it with the gift card deal.

I’ll pay $80, either through Amazon or Costco, but I don’t need it yet and I’m hoping for a dip in price, that probably won’t happen.
Interesting/odd that Amazon didn’t do the gift card deal this year. Wonder why.

I prefer the desktop version because, in theory, my information does not leave my PC (until I electronically file).

Yeah, I know it is encrypted on their servers ii you file online, but recent advances in compute power may render this encryption useless, in my opinion.

I did a little research and it appears they did the best deal on Nov 30th with the federal and state with gift card during Black Friday weekend. Up until this year I was pretty diligent about checking everyday starting Black Friday, but didn’t as it always came between Christmas and New Years. It appears they pulled a fast one on all of us.

And worth remembering for next year and buying on Black Friday.

Fidelity asks me to wait till mid January for a free link on its websire after I sign in,

Is the link for a desk top version or an online version ?

I usually have bought desktop versions from Amazon & have those prior yr version softwares on my laptop.

How different will be the online version of TT, I guess my taxes will be stored some where on the cloud storage of TT or wherever.

What is the disadvantage of online version over the desktop version ? Please help me understand this.

Thanks

Last year you could still buy the download version for $5.

I haven't gotten a free offer (for online) yet this year...got it all previous years.

I still think the TurboTax discounts are coming, just later than usual. I saw this story on Fidelity when I searched for TurboTax. Intuit's 2Q ends on Jan 31, 2025. It would seem that they've changed the timing of TurboTax promotions this year to occur AFTER that date (bold is mine)...

Nov 21 (Reuters) - Intuit projected second-quarter revenue and profit below market estimates on Thursday, hampered by sluggish demand for its financial management services and a planned change in the timing of its promotions.

The company's consumer group, which caters to individuals, is expected to see a single-digit revenue decline in the second quarter due to the delay in promotions for the desktop offering of TurboTax, its software widely used by Americans to file their taxes.

Intuit said the delay only impacts revenue timing and reiterated its annual forecast for double-digit revenue growth.

Interesting! So next year I should start looking at the price on 2/1? :)

For the 3 things I plan to input as income the price is kind of ridiculous IMO. . . my first year with no wages and no tax paid . . . so barely anything at all. . . not sure how it will turn out. But really not worth the cost of the software so next year I may try something else. It isn't as if I'm benefiting from lots of transaction imports or anything.

It's either one you want. But you have to keep your wits about you if you get that offer. Turbotax will try to steer you into taking the online version, but if you poke around a bit you'll be able to find the button to click that lets you get the desktop version to download. It's not always obvious, but it is always available.
If you haven't done it before and you want the desktop version, it might be wise to wait until someone posts the exact sequence of clicks to follow.

If I had a simple return, I wouldn’t hesitate to get H&R Block. I used it for some simple returns I did for family and it worked just fine. I prefer TT just because I’ve always used it and we share it as a family so we get three returns out of it.

"The New Fidelity Free Turbotax is here, The New Fidelity Free Turbotax is here"

Just downloaded the $5 version, link appeared sometime between this morning and 15-20 minutes ago.

Thanks. It says you get one free e-file and state but I want to share with my daughter and Premier version should come with 5 Free e-files so am I not understanding what they mean? Also if I get the $5 desktop version will I be able to load it on her PC as well so she can do her return? Sorry for being so ignorant, first time getting this offer and usually use the Deluxe Version.

No joy. Just the 25% discount. I got the full offer last year. Oh well.

For those who get the offer, it's there now.

On the Fidelity summary page, click the Get started now link in the notice. That takes you to an Intuit Turbotax page..
Ignore the big Get started button unless you want the free online version. Instead, look down a bit and click the "Turbotax Premier desktop download" link.
Select PC or Mac, then follow through as normal. You'll put in your credit card to pay the $5 cost (some states add sales tax to that).

Can you provide the link for the offer on the Fidelity website.

^^^ Probably not, since there is probably a token passed from site to site, to enable the offer. But, I could be wrong, and someone can try it.

Still only seeing 25% discount for me.
The free/$5 deal isn't offered to everyone.
There have been many threads, both here and on Bogleheads, where people have tried to figure out how Fidelity decides who will get the offer, but it's still largely a mystery.

Thanks - I forgot about this and started down the online rabbit hole. Downloaded and activated now.

Threeto

Last week I asked my advisor to look into it. And after a couple of days he called. Some mysterious system deep in the bowels somewhere is running the offers. Sounds like it changed yet again. He talked to his boss and offered to deposit $100 for Premier. I told him $50 was sufficient as we use Deluxe.

Finally, the link to free TT Premier show up in my Fidelity account. I got it through the link and it worked. However it is online version this year. Last couple of years, I used the desktop version. Is there any difference between the desktop and online TT?
Just noticed braumeister's message. Double checked and did not find any link to desktop version. It looks like I got a different link or may be it is too late since I already selected online link.

See post #390 above on how to navigate to the desktop version from the Fidelity link.
