2024 Tax Software

Same situation here. I still am still hopeful until the end of Jan. Another source says they run the eligibility requirements every 24 hours. Maybe they just haven't gotten to us yet?

Those requirements are subject to change each year but nobody knows what they are.

I called 800 544 5704 which is in the contact link on the upper right side of the home page. Turns out it's the private wealth client group.

Guy told me they're still working through and haven't processed who will get the offers for most of their clients yet. So keep checking until end of January he said.

Are you private client with an assigned advisor?

Contact them about it.

I plan to do so if I don't get the free offer by February.

Some of this account is a trust account for my late mother. Millions in Fidelity low-cost funds holdings there.

It used to be managed by them and my parents were paying $$$ fees until I converted it over to self-managed, low-cost funds back 5 years ago.

I've been getting TT free or for $5 since that time and before then as well.

But the contact link still shows Private Wealth or something like that, forget the exact verbiage but it's not their regular toll free line.

Thanks for the info. Here is another number for "Premium" accounts. I'm not calling, just waiting until the end of Jan.

It is strange as I keep a .docx with access instructions for each year I got the offer. They used to be almost cryptic, hence the instruction .docx. I've always received the offer in December...

Interesting! So next year I should start looking at the price on 2/1? :)

For the 3 things I plan to input as income the price is kind of ridiculous IMO. . . my first year with no wages and no tax paid . . . so barely anything at all. . . not sure how it will turn out. But really not worth the cost of the software so next year I may try something else. It isn't as if I'm benefiting from lots of transaction imports or anything.

If I had a simple return, I wouldn’t hesitate to get H&R Block. I used it for some simple returns I did for family and it worked just fine. I prefer TT just because I’ve always used it and we share it as a family so we get three returns out of it.

I've used H&R Block for well over 10 years, and I have very complex tax returns, plus do some relatives returns as well. In all cases H&R Block worked well and cost me ~ $22 or less every year for deluxe plus State.

This year I'm switching to Turbo Tax, due to Turbo Tax "reportedly" allowing Foreign Tax Credit Carryover AND e-file. H&R Block will do the Foreign Tax Credit Carryover, but then have to mail in the return.
I don't want to mail in my return so switching.

If still rolling out to end of Jan is true, too late for us. I got tired of the situation and went ahead and bought Deluxe after I our Fidelity contact offered funds to buy it as Costco offered a good deal. I will look again end of Jan.

You are probably talking Private Client Group which is our contact.

Fidelity only started offering this later 2010s because Vanguard offered it as a perk to select clients. Vanguard dropped the perk a few years later but Fidelity stuck with it which I expect they regret. It’s gotten more more mysterious.

There’s no way I’d wait without even knowing if I was going to get it. I’m patient enough to wait for the sales and got it this year at Costco with the $10 coupon that I can apply to my state filing fee. That’s good enough. Somehow I think that if I had enough money to qualify, I’d be even less interested in waiting. But, I do understand the LBYM mentality we generally share.

Yeah it’s kind of silly waiting for $5 when Deluxe costs us $48 at Costco (federal only). I don’t have a use for the $10 coupon as filing is included. I guess I was willing to wait until the end of December but not past mid January. I’m pretty tired of this waiting for Tax Software deals game. Getting $5 TurboTax software is motivating but at some point it becomes a big hassle. Fidelity reimbursed our cost this year but I think we’ll probably not even bother next year. If something free (or close) is there by Jan 15 great, otherwise we’ll buy our own.

I remember having that at one time... but lost all of mine as I did not have anything to offset it with...

Not sure how much I lost, but it was at least 5 figures...

I bought TurboTax Deluxe desktop (5 federal efile and one state efile).

I would like to know if another individual can use one of the 5 federal with online TurboTax rather than Desktop TurboTax. If yes, any additional details would be very helpful.

I suspect this has been discussed but I haven't found it yet.

Still haven't gotten the free button on Fidelity yet; I guess I'm going to have to contact my rep.

In case I don't get the free Premier this year; a simple question. For the first time I am going to have to pay NIIT; can I do that with Deluxe or do I need to get Premier?

thanks,

Marc

This information that Perplexity gave about your question may be helpful. I believe this link will take you right to it.

I don’t think so. Haven’t tried it, but I don’t think the desktop version and the online version are linked in any way. I just have my daughter come to the house and use mine on my computer.

Plus, you get one state tax version to use. You do not get a tax e-file for state. I download the software for MI from within TT but when I go to efile, the Federal is free (for up to five) but they charge to efile my state. I used to print and mail my state return, but I don’t do that anymore because I like the framework of knowing it cleared their system almost immediately after I hit the send button. So, I pay up. I think it’s $25.

Deluxe certainly handles NIIT as well as many other things.

Bullet #3 in that answer is incorrect.

I asked the follow-up:

"Are you sure bullet point #3 is correct? Is it the license agreement that is prohibiting the software from being installed on multiple computers or is it a technical software limitation?"

I find these AI systems pretty interesting. Always double and triple check important information that they return.

I am considering the free IRS efile this year. Does anyone have experience with the following websites?

eztaxreturn.com
1040.com
1040now.net

for all of those efile is free if AGI is under $84k and state is $25

thanks.

I think my state was $40?!? I was too cheap to do it last year and mailed it so possibly I remember wrong but. . . it was a lot for my cheap self.j

I remember it said it would cost $x but "rang up" as $x+something" and I was annoyed.

I'm fortunate enough to get the "free" TurboTax offer and I have no Fidelity funds. Also, have no idea if I have an account "level" or whatever. There was a guy who would call occasionally to set up a review but I didn't use him and eventually his name disappeared.

I have no knowledge of their method, but I have a sneaking suspicion that they now want you to have a significant stake in Fidelity products.

Yeah, you better double / triple check. I was testing ChatGPT and then even more in Perplexity Pro version on taxes related to TIPS, and it was giving one incorrect answer after another. I finally helped it with getting the correct answers in the end.

+1. AI doesn’t have access to any information you don’t have, it’s drawing from the internet just like all of us. AI may be more conversational and more effective at search than you or I, but you have access to all the same information and misinformation. Whether AI can better discern the difference is tbd. There are plenty of examples of ChatGPT mistakes.

I’m getting pretty tired of people posting what one LLM or another has to say about a subject during a forum conversation. Why not click through and review the references and/or verify info? What AI regurgitates on the surface is not very useful except as a very preliminary step.

Thank you Jerry. I also had the feeling the two were licensed differently in some way but I thought I would ask.
My kid and I are planning to do some testing on Tuesday 1/21/2025 and I'll post what I find out from my personal experience.

GA has (or should I say had last year) a $20 fee for state e-filing. Hopefully it hasn't increased.

Must be January with talk about the Fidelity Turbo Tax offer and how the mystery of how it works.

Amazon has TurboTax Deluxe 2024 Tax Software, Federal & State Tax Return [PC/MAC Download] listed for $44.99 now. No gift card. It is red tagged as a "Limited time deal" but that's what they said about the $55.99 price for months on end. I suspect this price might be much more limited.
