2024 Tax Software

I usually wait to the deadline to file. Why give Uncle Sam my money sooner. Example. I owe $5000. I keep that in a fixed account paying close to 5%. $5000*.05*.25(quarter of the year)=$62.50. Just payed for my TT.
Unless of course you're getting a refund. But that means you gave the money to US earlier in the year and didn't get the return on that either.
When I file my income tax, I schedule the payment for early April. The payment is not sent when I e-file. You can file earlier than you pay.

I'm waiting for my last 1099 which should be out in about 2 weeks. Everything else is entered into Turbo Tax.

Has anyone tried April through AARP? Supposedly it is free for federal and state and allows imports. Turbo tax has done reasonably well with my foreign tax credit which seems to be a week sport for tax software.

That's fine as long as you met the safe harbor and won't owe a penalty on any of the $5K underpayment. If you do, the current interest rate you'll be paying to Uncle Sam is 7%.

yes. My numbers were just an example but you do have to be aware of underpayment issues.

I'm almost done with mine, waiting on one more 1099-INT form. I'm using H&R Block software (I switched from TT about ten years ago). There seems to be a glitch this year... when I copied my 2023TY file to start my 2024TY return, most of the personal data didn't copy over as usual. Strange.

eFiled Fed and state, both accepted within and hour. Earliest ever. Thought I’d get it done in case the administration starts messing with the IRS.
Same here, for the same reason.

Be glad you don't have K-1's. My one is available on 3/17/25 (estimated). It sucks but the holdings and its dividends, and how they are handled tax wise, are well worth the wait.

It's not an accident I don't have any K-1's. Many years ago I did, and after selling the holding I decided I never would do that again.

Filed my taxes today. I have to pay because I did a Roth conversion so now I just need to get that set up. I’m going to use the online system for the payment as well as scheduling out my estimated payments.

We are waiting for one more number. Fidelity says it should be available mid-February.
Same here. That one number is the percent of federal source for a MMF.

Vanguard included the info in the 1099 Consolidated in January. I wish Fidelity wasn't so slow. I thought Vanguard was the one with poor customer service.

Filed mine last week, accepted right away. Thought I was done.
Then I got another 1099-INT in the mail today from an account I had forgotten about. Opened it last summer, and now instead of a tiny refund I will have a little tax bill to pay.

Went into TurboTax to look into filing an amended return, but it said that feature won't be available for a couple of weeks yet. Sigh.

You wouldn’t want to file the amended until the refund on your filing clears.

Why is that? This is new to me.
Cleaner. That way your original return doesn’t get caught up in review by a person which could keep the return from being finalized for a long time. The amendment will take a long time to process but you owe money so who cares. Get the original processed fully then file the amendment. I might feel different if the amendment can be electronically filed, but I’ve never know that to be possible. Still, I’d want to take one transaction at a time.

I'm honestly jealous this year that you all are done. . . I'm waiting on a form. I know I will owe so it is just suspense for "how much"?

do you not even have an estimate of what will be on this form? Most forms (but not all) can be predicted with reasonable accuracy from other information. K-1s are a notable exception.

Thanks, that’s sensible.

IDK how to predict the amount of the dividend that is "qualified".

I know the LT capital gain amount from the December statement.

If I had less money in this stupid fund I'd sell it but the taxes would be not good. . . and I'm not smart enough to know what to do with the money if I did sell . . .

NewEgg has a pretty good deal on H&R Block Deluxe + State right now, for $22.99.

NewEgg - H&R Block deal

This is $3 more than the best deal I've seen in recent months, but it's at least $10 more than the best deals on this bundle from early last year. Not sure it's gonna get much better than this, given H&R's price hikes on their downloadable 2024 software.

Actually, the deal is $22.49 with the $7.50 coupon code activated. Thanks for posting this as I just snagged it for myself.

You don't get qualified dividend treatment for funds that are really just interest, even if they call them "dividends" and they're reported on a 1099-DIV. And you don't get qualified treatment if you recently acquired the equity. But if you've owned a "real stock" for a while, the dividend is probably going to be qualified. If you own a mutual fund, it will depend on the amount of real dividends the fund collected vs other income. I usually take a stab at the split in December. I never hit it perfectly, but close enough for the Pro-Forma.

It is a MF. It should be available next week officially .
