2024 Tax Software

If anyone is still looking for a deal on Turbo Tax, today (on Amazon) I just bought and downloaded Turbo Tax Deluxe+State 2024 for $45.99 plus they are sending me the $10 gift card which will be delivered tomorrow.

How I did it: I clicked on the link in this post #452 (shown below) by Mike1968, posted on Jan 18....which took me to an Amazon page showing TT Deluxe+State for $55.99 AND IT INCLUDED the $10 gift card. At this late date, I figured that was better than the $55.99 (today's normal Amazon price) without the $10 gift card

When I purchased the TurboTax Deluxe+State 2024, Amazon charged me $45.99 plus sales tax PLUS I get the $10 gift card, too! Gift card is being delivered tomorrow.

How do you use the $10 credit which came with the Turbo Tax Deluxe deal for $45?

Where inside the app do you apply the credit, if for instance you want to apply it to your state tax return e-file?

In my case, I just put the $10 Amazon gift card on my Amazon account and use it for any future purchase. As money is fungible, I expect to pay the $20 TurboTax e-filing fee for filing my State return with my Fidelity credit card or, if memory serves, I seem to recall that, alternatively, I can mail in my state return simply for the cost of the postage.

TT automatically applies the credit when you go to e-file your state return. It starts out at $25 but it applies the credit and you run your credit card for $15.

Filed mine last week, accepted right away. Thought I was done.
Then I got another 1099-INT in the mail today from an account I had forgotten about. Opened it last summer, and now instead of a tiny refund I will have a little tax bill to pay.

Went into TurboTax to look into filing an amended return, but it said that feature won't be available for a couple of weeks yet. Sigh.
@Jerry1 advised waiting until I received the refund from my original return and that was most likely good advice. I did that, and the amended return was a piece of cake. Cost me more tax, but that's OK. Next year I'll wait a bit longer to make sure that 1099 has arrived. It has to come by snail mail, which was unexpected but OK.

One of the advantages of using Quicken is that absolutely all of our accounts are in there. The list is right there whenever I open the software.

I also keep a list each year to check received and expected tax docs against. Of course new accounts if any have to be added. I gather them online starting end of Jan. This may be the first year absolutely all were available electronically.

Probably also helps that we don’t start working on the tax return until late Feb and usually file in March.

I was missing an insurance form usually received by late Jan. I finally went looking for an online version at the beginning of Feb. The renewal questionnaire was due Feb 6! I took care of it online and meant to look for some place to complain about not receiving notification. I received the form on Feb 15. It was postmarked Jan 15! So yes, forms can get lost in the mail for a long time. Another reason I avoid mailed forms whenever possible.

That should be safe. Their requirement is for MacOS 10.15.7 or higher, which is two versions older than yours.

I can report that H&R Block does work on MacOS Monterey. I ran into a slight problem getting the state tax (NC) to work but a phone call to their support fixed it up (I’d bought Fed + State through Amazon).

My iMac is too old to run TurboTax.

Stuff like that makes me wonder what sort of kickbacks computer hardware makers pay the tax software companies to require newer hardware. It's not like new tax forms require some new math that only new computers can perform.

No idea! But at least there is a workaround (for now). I do want to replace the computer but I knew that anyway (don’t need a software vendor to make that call).

I used FreeTaxUSA this year and found it to be very good for a retirement return of SS, pension, brokerage statement and carry over capital losses.
if you have a k-1 free tax usa can not be used. ask me how I know!

So here's a new one.

I've been doing a couple of returns for a couple of weeks.

I have last year's return along side the current year's version of Turbo Tax so both Turbotax 2023 and Turbotax 2024.

I've been doing this for years and I have Turbotax installed going back to 2010.

I did software updates on my Mac so I went back and relaunched Turbotax 2023 and 2024.

Both versions, when I opened a return that was password-protected popped up a little window which said Share Screen code with a 6-digit code that I'm suppose to give to Intuit support.

I'd never seen this before because I haven't really sought support from them much over the years. I certainly didn't try to use their screen sharing feature at all.

Yet both versions think I initiated this request, with a code to give to their support people so that they can observe my screen.

I figure OK, as long as I don't give these codes to anyone, there is no screen sharing, right?

But my Mac thinks someone is observing my screen. When the screen goes to sleep, I have it set up to enter my admin password to unlock the screen. Except I use my Apple Watch to unlock the screen, to avoid repeatedly entering my password during the day.

However, it won't unlock with Apple Watch if the screen is being observed so the Mac OS thinks my screen is being shared. When I quit Turbotax, it no longer is in that state.

But I relaunched Turbotax and now I get the Share Screen code again and my Mac thinks again, someone is looking at my screen.

So I called Intuit support and they're blathering on that it's not possible unless I give them the code. They say they've never been hacked, as if that's suppose to be reassuring.

For whatever reason, when I have Turbotax open, the Mac believes there's an active Screen Sharing session.

Intuit "can almost guarantee" that nobody from Intuit is looking at my screen.

But can they guarantee that nobody else is looking at my screen? Can they guarantee that it's not a security flaw?

I asked for a supervisor who tells me I'm not suppose to have two versions of Turbotax open at the same time, that she thinks that's what's causing it. I've never had any problems having two versions of TT open at the same time going back over a decade of using the product.

They have no interest in my submitting a bug report.

Very unsatisfactory.

I just had three versions of Turbotax open this year on a Windows PC: 2024, 2023, 2022. No problems.

The share screen passcode thing is weird. Please make sure your Mac is not compromised in some way. It thinks sharing is going on (it must check for it in the latest software update). Your computer may have it globally set on somehow, and it might be a wider problem than Turbotax.

Then again, it might be the Intuit idiots having a Windows bias and they put a bug in the Mac version.

Regardless, I'd be very nervous seeing this kind of behavior.

I think TT has such a dominant position that they aren't much interested in usability improvements or supporting customers with unusual issues.

That would be my guess as well. Honking off a customer here and there who has complicated taxes won't change their bottom line (heh, heh, of course, they don't know about our Forum and its wide reach among potential customers.)

I wouldn't be so sure they don't know about us. I have recommended this forum to several current and retired TT employees, including a few that have significant influence over product direction. I know at least one visits from time to time though I don't think he's officially introduced himself and might not mention where he works if he did. FIRE is a goal for a number of Intuit employees, just as it is at other tech companies.

The membership here is really minuscule compared to TT's overall customer base though. Even if we all wanted the same thing, it's unlikely to have much of an impact.

I double-checked the H&R Block returns and they are ready to go. I’ll probably continue with Block for 2025 (my taxes are extremely simple).

I never did see any options to have my return “fit on a postcard”.

It's like the old joke about the "postcard" tax form.

1). How much did you make?
2). Send it in.

This may have been covered before but I did notice that Block doesn’t appear to summarize an effective tax rate (ETR) while Turbo Tax does.

There appears to be some debate about what exactly an effective tax rate is so I just used a simple calculation:

ETR = Total Tax / Taxable Income

I don’t think the numbers matter much except in discussion. Naturally, mine is higher than I would like!

Yeah, I mentioned Cash App earlier. It would save me $10 vs. my OLT due to the state e-file charge with OLT unless you mail the state, but I don't know if it's worth changing to something different to save $10.
Oh good news. It ended up that OLT state file was free for me this year because my income wasn't over $48K, now that I'm no longer working a job. Saved $10.

Didn't see a thread yet but thought I'd share that as of this morning FreeTaxUSA (I've been very happy with it the last couple years) is now live! I just started my 2024 return with bogeys to plan my year end income realization.
I have been using TaxHawk for over 15 years. They are the same. TaxHawk owns FreeTaxUSA. Several years ago, FreeTaxUSA used to give me 10% off if I paid by Jan 31st. Paying isn't equal to filing. I would just go to the end and pay first.
