The link is to an interesting report on the third consecutive year of declining life expectancy in the US. For the top 10 leading causes of death, there was an increase in the death rates for those with Chronic Lower Respiratory Diseases, Stroke, Alzheimer Disease, Diabetes, Influenza and Pneumonia, Suicides, and unintentional injuries. There were declines in the death rates for Cancer, Heart Disease, and Kidney Disease.

There were increases in the death rates for those 85 and over, 65-74, 55-64, 35-44, 25-34.

Opioids and suicides are increasingly contributing factors.

How many years before this is recognized as a real trend? When will the tables get updated? Shouldn't LTC premiums drop and annuities pay out more?

Happy New Year!

those are observed death rates

not my lob but I'm pretty sure that the rates that are used to calculate ltc and annuity premiums have projected mortality improvement
