My doctor told me to do more resistance exercise in response to diabetes/glucose/A1C test results going slightly over threshold. He said pushups and situps would be fine.

I have an ab roller wheel which is really too advanced for my 67 year old body/back at this time so I found these ab rollers with elbow pads on Amazon and the difference is amazing, stark and life-changing. I won't link or show anything here but just search "ab roller" on Amazon and you'll see many choices.

The first day with an elbow-pad roller (kind of like aero bars on a triathlon bike) was painful and the resulting muscle soreness the next day after 5 reps was quite high, in a good way. I rested one day to heal and was able to do 10 reps with moderate pain and moderate soreness the next day. By the end of two weeks I was up to 3 sets of 10 reps without any pain or discomfort and no soreness. Today, I do 4 sets of 20 reps in the morning after waking while brushing teeth, shaving, washing my face and taking meds in the morning. I find 20 reps spaced out a minute or two apart to be optimal in order to avoid back soreness/stiffness. It also breaks up my morning routine in the vanity, too. The amazing thing is I can get into a flat planking position at full extension and do some isometric stretching at the bottom of each rep, pain free and really tightening up my abs. Although I still have some belly fat I see 4-pack abs starting to form and I can feel the underlying muscle structure that eventually forms into 6-pack abs if I were to lose the belly fat. I've always had a little belly fat just due to being middle-aged and older and not being as lean as I would like to be.

My wife tried using this but she said it hurts her back, to each their own, I guess.

One thing I noticed is I can snap out of bed like a switchblade knife now with the increased core strength in my abs.

Good work! For even better resistance exercise, I would recommend those stretchy rubber resistance bands. Loads of different types.

Great to hear that you found something that works for you so well. (Yes, I did look it up.) I do have back issues so don't know if it would cause me back pain like your DW.

With my back issues, I'd almost be afraid to try an ab roller, but YMMV.

Which did you buy? I don't think there's a problem with posting a link here. I see there are one wheel and two wheel models.

Strangely, it makes my back feel better after using mine. Maybe stronger ab muscles help with back pain? No idea. I definitely needed to ease into it though (don't stretch out all the way at first) as I don't have the elbow pad kind.

I love our ab wheel, but I've got an issue with trying to progress from doing it with my knees on the pad to doing it with only my toes touching the ground, the difficulty jump is too high, anybody manage to train into that?

I know the problem. I solved it by becoming more violent/quicker with my ab contraction, almost snapping myself quickly upright. It hurts at first but definitely helps and gets a little cardio in as I do 20 reps at a time as fast as I can.
