ACA questions

I've been getting emails from healthcare.gov about needing to renew my ACA plan. I finally went there today rather than doing it in December like last year.

I put in estimated income of $350 for November (which is a lot lower than my December income, so much lower monthly amount than entered last year) and put $30,000 for my estimated 2025 yearly income.

Despite the $30,000 figure, it said I might be eligible for Medicaid, and that my information was being submitted to my state, and to wait to hear from the state, and I had no option to renew my ACA plan!

Fortunately, I was able to go into the application and change my November income along with answering a bunch of questions again so that it would let me renew my ACA plan for 2025.
In my state any monthly amount under $1,732 will put you in Medicaid. It also does a 12 month lock in once you are on it. So that is either good or bad depending on your view and something to be aware of.

Dumb question, but is it a bad thing to be put on Medicaid instead of ACA?

Usual answer I have seen is it depends on your state's Medicaid and then also to some degree on your medical needs. If you're relatively healthy and don't need a dentist, my state's Medicaid seems pretty good. But they vary in quality.

I'd suggest asking around in your state for opinions from people who have been on it.

It appears to be the same thing in Illinois, as it refers to the yearly redetermination to determine if you are still eligible. With $30K estimated income, I didn't expect to be eligible, so I didn't want that delay. Also, I didn't really want to be on Medicaid - never have been. It looks like my income is mostly concentrated in 4 or 5 months, so I would be way over the Medicaid limits those months while under the limit other months.

It is a YMMV thing. All my docs are in the plans so for me it was great. $200 max OOP a year. Complete protection from Provider billing.

Hi all I'm just putting this in here if anyone wants to put in there information here and your supposably income for the year to se how much you will get in subsidiaries being on a ACA plan. I use this to see how low you can go with income before you get put into the States Medicare program (www.healthsherpa.com)
