Hi all,

I'm a mid-40's Active Duty O5 looking at possibly transitioning out of military in '16 (@21 yrs). Found this site from The Military Guide (just started reading the book). I've been scouring the threads for the past few days; definitely some interesting reading mixed in with some solid advice (and opinions).

Once I get my numbers (i.e. expenses) tallied, I'd love to get some advice/opinions on how likely a ~'25 FIRE would be. I believe I've got some years of work left in me and if I find the right job after transition, I can't see myself quite hanging (most) everything up quite yet.

thanks

Alistair

Welcome, and while you may not want to "hang everything up just yet" it sure is nice to have the option if you want to. It also means you can have a very shallow BS bucket, a good spot to be in.

Thanks for the welcome! Looking forward to learning more and perhaps contributing my experiences.

Another customer got here following the "Tell 'em Nords sent you" advise. :)
Welcome! Let us know if you have any questions.

Alistair,

I'm EXACTLY in the same situation as you are. Since I'm reading your threat almost 3 years after your original post, I was wondering if you could offer any wisdom of any lessons learned since you last made your original post.

Thanks!

still here

Alistair,

I delayed by 2 years. I'm now looking at this fall. Should be pulling the trigger to submit request this month. All ADSCs and any Codes are clean (did an eligibility check this week).

What I've learned is network, network, network; take care of medical issues early and talk to plenty of people who have gone through the process.

But most importantly, communicate with your family about it. They are going to have to deal with the change to. My wife was quite uneasy about it (a number of other things going on this year), but we've gotten through the other hurdles and now it's more of a logistical and educational issue.

There is a "militaryFIRE" FB group that is useful to follow. Some good nuggets of info.

Anyway, good luck with your transition.

Alistair
